| hellfirewyrm02-17-04, 10:13 PM | lol, anyone know a freak of D&D or is one? Here is a place to tell some of those horror stories. I play regularly, about 2x a month. Not too long ago, I went out to Media Play to buy some minis and a book, and I met one of those scary guys. He was about 35 (no offense guys) and started talking to me. I don't look like a D&D player at all. I have a varsity jacket and play 3 sports and stuff. I just don't match. Most people never believe I do D&D. The guy started to explain how D&D 3.5 was way better than 3.0 and how I should spend all this money on Mongoose books. It sounded nice, for someone who had that kinds of $$$. I don't. My friend was trying to 'save' me from him, but then he asked the scariest question a teen could hear....How many players are in your gaming group? I freaked. I quickly made up a number, 6!!! I actually have about 8. Either way, he offered to be a sorceror in my games, but I told him I had my little bro who was a sweet wizard. I didn't need any more guys eating my snacks. That's a scary story for me. Maybe it isn't for you, or it would be you. Either way, take no offense. I found it funny that this guy was desperate enough to ask some teens to play D&D. Scary. |
| Seeker9502-17-04, 11:13 PM | Something in your story doesn't sit well with me. This guy said he likes 3.5 over 3.0 and recommended a lot of Mongoose products? 3.5 (rightly so, in my opinion) nerfed a lot of things from 3.0, decreasing power levels. Mongoose Publishing makes arguably the most overpowered line of products on the market! :smirk: |
| Seeker9502-17-04, 11:15 PM | Now, as for knocking the guy for asking teens to play D&D, you might want to double check yourself there. There is nothing wrong with a diverse age group playing the same game. My group ranges in age from 12 to 30, and I the DM am 35. The youngest two players are the children of my wife's best friend. (Doesn't make the guy any less weird. After all, he still suggested mixing 3.5 and Mongoose Products.) |
| aldymnor02-18-04, 05:13 AM | One time, my friend Kacy and I were walkin out of Fred Meyer's. Some guy was there selling some promotional thing. I forget what it was, but I know it had to do with picture frames. I said, "Well <crud>, if you could reduce arcane spell failure by 55%, it wouldn't matter anyway." The guy actually tracked us down outside, as he was behind us when he heard it. He was like "Have you guys seen that GE commercial with the PHB?" I was like "no." He goes "Yeah, they have this commercial where a really pretty lady pulls a Player's Handbook out of a drying machine. You were talking about D&D, right?" The pause was an awkward one. The sun was almost setting in the parking lot, but it was light enough to see he must have been 35, and needed a profession that keeps him a lot busier. I mean I'm 20 and one of my best friends is like 36 and he plays D&D but jeez.. this was just too much. He was like "how often do you guys play?" and I said "off and on. in fact, we have to go play now." then i left. I hate rejecting people, so I just try to avoid it like a weakling. PS: mission accomplished. Edit: i agree about the mongoose and 3.5 thing. That is just inexplicable as hell. |
| Capn Charlie02-18-04, 06:17 AM | Due to the inherently cell based nature of dnd is it any wonder that gamers who haven't seen another player since their game group formed in the late eighties is starved for outside contact? Seriously, there are a lot of guys that think they are the last player in a large area and are starved for contact with other hobbiests. I'm 20, and when I happened to meet a group of pre-teens, that gather at the local hastings to play cards and clix, they were greatly impressed with a "grown up" that played games. Before long they had thrown pokemon(Surely this is Lovecraftian...) and yugioh(isn't that a great old one?) to the wayside, and they're clicks were retrofitted for dnd. With the blessing and encouragement(reading is good!) of their parents I started a saturday morning gaming group there. In my youth I too thought that older gamers were cool, and my game would have went down in a flaming wreck without the tips and encouragement of a few guys I met at the book store. Maybe It is an outmoded concept, but I believe in paying respect to those who came before. Without these "creepy" guys playing the game while we were watching cartoons and playing with action figures, we wouldn't have the hobby we all enjoy today. Oh, and the next time you have a few words with someone on these boards, remember: They could be one of those "creepy older guys". In the last few weeks several people I have spoken to, or listened to, for years have been revealed as 30+ gamers. I thought most were my age. Either I am just an older guy at heart, or they are much younger of spirit than some give them credit for. |
| Joel_d_d02-18-04, 06:53 AM | You still didn't say what made him "creepy"? By the way, I'm 38 and DM for a group that ranges in age from 17 to 34. I don't think I'm creepy. But then again, I do retrieve corneas for an eye donor program, and have decided that I want to go back to college and major in anthropology. So maybe I am a little creepy. :) Anyway, my biggest D&D horror story goes something like this: I was invited to play D&D at some peoples house, I had never met these folks before, but one of my friends who owned a video rental store was talking to them when they had come in to rent movies. Anyway, we went over to this house and I started to get creeped out before we even set foot in the door. The place was basically a run down rental property, and I started to get spooked, especially after the guy who had invited us said we'd have to wait outside because the DM wasn't out of bed yet (it was 1:30 in the afternoon!). We went inside and it was like TOTAL roach motel, it was broad daylight and there were cockroaches crawling every where, up the walls, on the floor, it was the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. Being the polite person that I am, I sat there for about three hours gritting my teeth and keeping quiet, rather than freaking out and running away in terror. I have never been back, or had any of those people join in my gaming groups. |
| Rorroh Fiendhugger02-18-04, 07:15 AM | the DM wasn't out of bed yet (it was 1:30 in the afternoon!). In weekends and during vacation, I usually don't get up until about 4, sometimes 6 in the afternoon. As for the cockroaches/motel: sounds like my kinda place :D |
| hellfirewyrm02-18-04, 08:14 AM | The weird part for me was not only that he said I should use Mongoose and 3.5, which seemed pretty odd. Was that I don't know too many other gaming groups around here that just up and recruit people. I know about 5 in the area and they all have about 8 people in each. We're thinking of getting them together to campaign, but that won't be til later. I don't mind talking about D&D to people, but the other weird part was that he wouldn't stop talking either. It was mostly about some Monk/paladin/cleric of levels 20/15/25. It wouldn't be possible really and that just made it sound dumb. Either way, my dad's in his 40s and plays D&D. Sometimes, he brings a few of his buddies over and plays with us. Its great to have different heads thinking about one puzzle. The funny thing was: my friends figured the puzzles out easiest. lol. |
| tankmiz02-18-04, 10:41 AM | In response to hellfirewyrm's story, I agree with him that it can defenitely be a creepy story and one (like others similar to it) that can give D&D a bad reputation. I'm a high school teatcher and know how much the parents are concerned (or at least should be) for their children's wellfare. There is nothing wrong with being an adult and sharing time and an interest with children. I mean there no healthier image than that of a father playing catch with his son. Unfortunately there are "sicko's" (I can't really write how I really want to describe them) who prey on children so when a stranger (adult) shows interest in their child parents are usualy afraid (and children are programed to be afraid) and I don't blame them. Better to ruin a friendship oppurtunity than to put your life in danger. Since D&D is usually played at someones house, parents (and children) may fear that talking about D&D to a stranger may lead to an invitation to their house. Solution: have gaming sessions in local stores, community centers, library, schools. (I teach in a catholic school and still managed to dm a few sessions for some of my students as a reward for the help they had given to the audio/video club) D&D already has a creepy reputation in some erea's and adult talking to kids isn't well perceived in our days. I remember when I was a kid we'd play baseball at the park every summer night. From 6 to 60 the first 18 players out got to play. Today, If we're playing (a group of about 12 people age 20 to 40) there not one kid that even thinks of asking us to play and not one of us dares to ask them to join in and I' a ----- teacher. It's just the society we live in. So please, If you talk to a kid and he's afraid of you, don't take it personally, we just programmed him that way to try to keep him safe. |
| Capn Charlie02-18-04, 10:59 AM | I concur, if you are going to participate in gaming with minors then either a.)Be friends with their parents or b.)do it officially through a store or other facility in a public place. Or to be on the safe side, both. Not everyonr out there has the XGood alignment we do. |
| Graz Hober02-18-04, 11:24 AM | Bah! You're all amateurs when it comes to freaky-geek stories! I never had one of those high school groups that stuck together for twenty years playing the same game, so I've had to make do with putting groups together myself or joining them. In fifteen years of doing that, I've DM'd for literally hundreds of people... 90% of whom were FREAKS! Believe you me, they're out there, lurking in the shadows, eating cheetos, popping zits and picking noses; and they're waiting to join YOUR group! My current group (we're yet to actually meet but I know two of them as friends and the other two through the net casually for a couple of years), is truly one of the sanest groups I've put together and the last coherent group I had was the best and, quite frankly, I was probably the worst in it as far as 'creepy-geeks' go. But all of the other groups... *shiver*. I've experienced the gamut, and run from it. Here's an insight into the two worst that I can recall: Last year some time I joined a group for a couple of sessions. Now, the game was fun, and most of the people (except one moron) were actually pretty cool, but... OMG! The place was a PIGSTYE. I mean, the carpet hadn't been vacuumed in at least a year, there was rotten food in several places, the couches were all broken and filthy and looked like they had been picked up from the side of the road on hard rubbish collection day and there were empty beer bottles and cigarrette butts filling ashtrays to overflowing. That, and a collection of beer bottle tops that filled several beer cartons... the worst thing, though, was that the group consisted of around ten people, most of whom were chain-smokers. Ugh. I swear to you that my eyes were watering because of the thick pall of smoke that hung over the room. And I assure you, that was not the worst... The worst was the gay, fat, unwashed nose-picker. Now, I'm not anti-gay, I'm just mentioning that because it's relevant to what happened... Imagine a group of gamers who are... a little strange. Nothing too overt, mind you, just weird in their own little ways. Except for one guy. A really FAT, 25+ guy who picks his nose quite happily in front of you and doesn't mind the chewy ones. Imagine him wearing a thread-bare, coffee and god knows what stained t-shirt that does NOT cover his bulbous stomach. Imagine him in tracksuit pants. Imagine him scratching his... err... nether regions... constantly. Now imagine that he's overtly gay, and very lascivious. Continue, if you dare, to imagine that the toilet is a room five feet behind you. Imagine him going to it... coming out after NOT having washed his hands... and then deciding you need a good shoulder rub! Top that! |
| Vyvyan Basterd02-18-04, 11:33 AM | My horror story is twenty years old. I was 13 at the time. I had started playing the game when my junior high librarian started a D&D game night at the school. I heard about the LGS and that they had a game room in the back. I decided to head over one Saturday. Two gamers in their mid-twenties to thirties said they were beginning a new campaign and were rolling up new characters that day. They ran me through their character creation process, which used a mix of Arduin Grimoire and AD&D. Then after rolling all game-related stats they told me to roll on the appearance chart. No problem, blue eyes, black hair, your character is a hermaphrodite...WHAA?!?!? I was 13, had no idea what that meant, so they decided to explain it detail inappropriate to these boards. I quickly made up an excuse to leave and didn't go back there to game for many, many years. |
| Seldarin02-18-04, 12:27 PM | Maybe it's not a terror stories for me.. but for my parents ;p A few years ago I saw a movie on T.v. It was about DnD, and some kids who are at a school campus. They were really freaky on this game, and they played DnD in real-time. They went to the sewers beneath the school, and fought there with swords and stuff. And one time they were in influence of drugs and alcohol so they made a rule, if one of them killed their parents and took some jewellery, he gain very much Xp. So he did that and he get arrested after a long while. Because they know of nothing. I can't remember what the name of the movie was.. But now my parents are always complaining if I'm going t a friend or I gonna buy a new book, that I have to stay with both legs on the ground... that's quite funny I think.. but terror for my parents. And more terrorly if they know I've got a sword, a bow, a chainmail on my room ;) nah.. I'n not as crazy as they where ;) |
| jedi23702-18-04, 01:02 PM | Graz Hober I can't top yours. That is very creepy and I've got chills just thinking about it. |
| Rugraknot02-18-04, 01:02 PM | Find I just resently had a scary D&D exsperiancce. I just moved to Tokyo Japan to stay with my Aunt. I can speak Japanese desently but it is not the best, like i have to think ofr a few seconds before saying things unless they are farly common place words or sayings. Well anyway I diside that I am not going to stop playing D&D so I put up one of those papers you put on buliten boards that has little tabs with phone numbers on them. Well i put it up in the lobby of the building I live in and one in a near by coffie shop. 3 days go by and i dont get any respone until theirs a knock at the door. I go to see who it is and there is this guy in his Mid 30s standing there. I ask him politly what he wants and he says to me in english(bad mind you): Gonkuro: You play Dungeons and Dragons? Me: Yes. Gonkuro: You want to play now. My group has just all died and we want to find a new Gm or last Gm was not able to play often enouph. Me: Sure when does your group meet? Gonkuro: Right now. Me: Oh you want me to come right now I have homework (damn home work) Gonkuro: Thats ok where is it. <I point at it and he goes and gathers it up, i start to get scared> Gonkuro: Dont worry we can do it for you. So I leave a not for my aunt say were I am, the game was at his appartment in the same building. I get to his appertment and we get in and there are 4 people there waiting. Ages 20-40 I put down all my campaign stuff and tell the people my house rules this is the next scary part. They start to speak in japanese and they speak so fast i could not understand them at frist and I discover a univeral Constant. (not exactaly what they siad but the best i can translate) Koiji: Can I be a Troll? With Half-Red Dragon? Midori: Can i be a Half-Subbicuss Nymph? Sakuko: Can I be a Half-Nymph Subbicuss? Toshiharu: You idiots he just told us the rules. Midori: But i wanna please <puppy dog face> Toshiharu: No he wount, he wount let you, stop wasting time. Sakuko: Stop being meen to her. Gonkoru: stop fighting or the people next to us will be mad. Me: Are you read to be 'serious'(used wrong word meening serious) <they all look at me funny> Koiji (english):did you mean serious? Me: Yes He explains to them what happend and they luaph. <this is when I relize why their old DM would not play with them that often, they are so childish. Maybe because they could not be kids when they were the right age do to how damn hard school is here, BTW i am typing this while i am doing my damn home work, I dont sleep anymore :( > Now with me having the right to be childish i take the opertunity to say obsene and sexual comments to the Females they though it was funny because they asumed it was me not speaking japanese well of some told me it ment somthing else strongly suspecting Koiji giving him looks. After if was finished Sakuko wanted to go shopping with me at 11 at night so I went with her after she told me it would be fun and telling my aunt. I would didnt bother thinking about needing sleep because jet lag was sit slightly in affect. So she brings me to this stupid store and i stand their telling her my opnions of what she is trying on for half and hour. Then she takes me to an arcade (thats was fun). The funny thing was i has seen that arcade before on TV it was the same on X-Play went to on there Big in Japan episode. This next part is also a bit scary but for a differnt resion. She wants me to sleep with her because she does not love her husband. I hade to think about(for about a minute) it and said no because i dont want to cause any trouble. She is persistant about it for about 10 minutes until she called him and ask him if she could and I'm thinking :looloo: and then he says he says she could because he is sleeping with other women too :smirk:. Fade to Black. Well now its about 3 in the moring and i have to leave for school in at 7:30 so i figue i go home and get some sleep. But no nothing about this day (you knwow aht i meen) can be normal i have to be mugged (lol i had was 20 canadian dollars) by some idiot on the way home (i am walking its only a few blocks). Then like a bat out of hell this guy chases after the mugger and gets my money back for me. I had hurd this happend to a freind of my Dad on a trip to Japan but i had never expeted it to happen to me. I was polite to the nice yuong man who got my money back for me but quickend my pass but to my appertment (Run). So my campaign started and that is my gaming group now but anyway i forget to get my homework back and I am very worried about going to school the next moring go to the station go catch the train. I could just take the bus but i dont know the route well enouph yet so i have to take the train because i can see the school from the station. I am about to get on the train when i hear a voice shouting over the music saying "Tomasu 'you are' books!" I turn around and there is Gonkuro all red in a face carrying my home work he gives it to me i say thank you and get on the train. You might not think this was scary but I was creepd out because: 1. Gonkuro takes my books from me. 2. I get to his appertment and only 1 other speaks english and my japanese isn't the best yet. 3. I forget to take my books back. 4. I wanter off at night with a women 6 years older than me agenst my better jugment. 5. The part i am not repeting and you know what it is. 6. I am in a load of troble because my English to Japanese translator (for written work) was in the pile and I cant read japanese very well yet. 7. I already am having a hard time with one of my teachers (the english teacher, the others dont have a problem with me but i corrected the englsih teacher a few times and he got angery) and I dont want any more not to like me. 8. Gonkuro runs after me all the way up those big stairs to the train to give me my home work which he did just so i could come DM them. And that was all in my frist week in a forein contory in which I only know one other person (who lives in Kyoto) and i hardly even see my aunt at home unless its past 11 pm and then she goes right to sleep. This is only my second week here but so far everything is has been normal but i cant say that for long because on saterday i am going to Tokyo Tower and i swear by Mordakinens Sword that if i get hit with some displacment wave and end up on the other side of the galaxy or in a parralel world they'll be paying the 9 hells for it :88E:. |
| Zherog02-18-04, 01:03 PM | Bah! Ametuers! I've got you all beat! Last year, at GenCon, I gamed with Cog and diaglo - at the same time! |
| Rian Lightblade02-18-04, 01:24 PM | I was attending an RPGA gameday that a friend and fellow DM was running at our FLGS. One of the players at my table was a guy who fit every gamer stereotype in existence (save for BO). He was socially inept, had horrible acne, liked to pick his nose, had a pinched, nasal voice and no fashion sense what-so-ever. Despite that, he was rather interesting to game with because he DID fit every gamer stereotype. I felt like some kind of sociologist (which actually was my second major) doing a study. Anyway, back to the story. We were right in the middle of the adventure when we heard him exclaim! "I'm Bleeding!!" As it turned out, while the rest of the group was engaged in some RPing he had been picking at the acne scabs on his face, and he was indeed, bleeding, from several places. A few drops had even fallen on his character sheet and dice. I've never seen a table clear so fast in my life. Needless to say we never did finish that adventure, and I never saw some of the people who showed up that that day, again. I mean nose picking, and no social skills are one thing. But there is something so, unclean about someone's acne puss tainted, blood dripping on the gaming table, that's just kind of creepy, gross and unnerving, all at the same time. To this day, the combination of those two word spoken at time still give both me and my friend the shivers. “I’m Bleeding!!” :twitch: |

Mazes and Monsters did not involve the D&D players using drugs/alcohol and never once did they decide that killing their parents and stealing their parents jewelry would equate to more experience in the game. Likewise, no parents died in the movie; rather Tom Hanks couldn't seperate reality from fantasy and his parents lived. |
| KelanenPrinceofSwords02-18-04, 04:46 PM | Hehehe! I'll bet Tom Hanks would like to use a wish spell to make that one cease to exist! |
| KelanenPrinceofSwords02-18-04, 05:10 PM | My scary D&D story is about Double Dagger Man. That wasn't the PCs real name, but that is how he will be called forevermore by myself and the other gamers who were present to witness the debut (and also only appearance) of Double Dagger Man in one old-school campaign I ran back in high school. This big jock who had transfered from some other school some how got wind that I was running a good game, and asked if he could join us. Being a social fellow, I invited him to the next game. We played in my folks' garage on a ping-pong table (without the net), and there were probably 6 or 7 of us around the table. The regulars were playing characters they had worked up from 1st level, and were currently 15th or so. This guy pulls out his character, and I asked for his character level - he responded that he was a 17th level fighter - a bit higher level than the others, but no problem. I asked what his ability scores were. Most were in the mid twenties. When asked by several incredulous players (all at once) how he had gotten his stats so high, his answer was, "I pulled a lever". He had pulled levers in some previous DM's dungeon and was given ridiculously high scores for it. We all balked, of course, but at the same time, we were intrigued. I asked what magic items he possessed. "Not very many, just a suit of +6 full plate, a few rings and potions, and a +5 double dagger." A double dagger? None of us had ever heard of such a weapon, but everyone else had weapons of around +5 enchantment, and seemed to possess more magic than this guy's character, so I decided that his higher level and ridico scores would be balanced out by his modest gear. After all, a dagger only does d4 damage, so a double dagger couldn't be all that bad, right? So we begin the game, and it quickly becomes apparent that Double Dagger Man is way above the other PCs' league. We were all baffled and a little irate when Double Dagger Man claimed to inflict enough damage to off a frost giant on every hit. "How?," we asked, "How did you inflict 130 points of damage with a single blow of your 'double dagger?' " He could sense that he was under the disbelieving scrutiny of the other players and myself, and being alot bigger and stronger than everyone else at the table, he decided to try some intimidation checks on us. He must have rolled pretty good, because we continued to play, and Double Dagger Man continued to wreak his own unique brand of bloody havoc on an entire tribe of frost giants while the other characters watched in growing bemusement. The next week, we told him I had gotten a new job and wasn't running the game anymore. I think he knew why. We continued the campaign, and had Double Dagger Man die horribly at the hands of Thrym, god of frost giants, as the first order of business at the next game. He did acquire immortality in the legends of our gaming group, some members of which I still game with regularly, and will be ever after known as Double Dagger Man. |
| Brknlf02-18-04, 05:24 PM | Aside from the intimidation, it is kind of funny. I think everyone who played during the hayday of D&D back in the 80's have all encountered someone who lied about stats and introduced radical magical artifacts that where compete cheese. That's one reason I don't allow characters from other campaigns into mine. I remember one guy back in the 80's who made a Sunsword, like Thundar the Barbarian, where he could slice threw armor and do ridiculous amounts of damage. However, he wasn't physically intimidating to us, we eventually just took his sheet and ripped it to pieces. |
| KelanenPrinceofSwords02-18-04, 05:59 PM | That's really funny. I wouldn't have dared to rip up Double Dagger Man in those days, but I might now, having grown rather in size myself, and having taken kung fu for several years since then. Yep, munchkin stories are great. Would love to hear some more from others. |
| hellfirewyrm02-18-04, 10:22 PM | I always wondered if the mythical 'Monty Hall' world existed. I remember stories of guys who became a leader of a tribe of indian guys because he threw a spear good or 'pulled a lever and his stats go up'. Man, if my group knew of these worlds, they'd be mad. Sometimes, when I'm in a bad mood, I get stingy and give terrible treasure like a +1 longsword for a 12th lv guy. Or a guy begs for an axe and he gets a mace. Great being a DM. This was the point of the Thread. I just wanted to know if other people had funny stories too. I have a few more I will get out later. |
