| Emrick Blackthorn01-25-05, 09:48 PM | Everyone~ Hi! I was digging in my closet tonight and came across something that I totally forgot I had. Three Christmas ago my Mother found and got me another copy of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition Trivia Game. The game was release by TSR in 1991 with the item number of 1069. The game was a lot of fun when we used to play, and I thought maybe we could give it a try here. The questions were divided into 5 levels with basically three different types of answers; True/False, Multiple Choice and General Answer. I thought I could post one question from each level once a week, wait for answers to be posted and then post the correct answers. Now yes, this is based on 2nd Edition rules, but this is OK. If you play by 3.0 or 3.5 just make reference to where you find your info from. This will give me the chance to learn some of the differences in the rules and help me decide if I would like to get the newer editions. Here's an example (and yes this is a real question from the game): Lv 1) Who makes the final call on all game rules a. The Dungeon Master b. TSR employees c. The biggest person at the table d. The person who owns the dice Now the correct answer is: a - DMG (Dungeon Master's Guide), page 7 Your answer might look like DMG 3.0, page 7 or DMG 3.5, page 7 Please let me know what you all think about doing this. I really think this could be really fun and a learning experience for all of us. ~Emrick |
| Wharin01-25-05, 10:29 PM | I beg to differ... i think its C) and proven by his fist, as stated on knuckles 1,2,3,4 and 5. :D |
| Seeker9501-25-05, 11:03 PM | If you can see all five knuckles, he's throwing his punch like a sissy. :P |
| Wharin01-25-05, 11:23 PM | I do not... um... er... *HE* does not punch like a sissy... he just has... um... very oddly shaped hands... um.. er... because he punches people so often... yeah... thats the ticket... yeah... But seriously... I am not sure if its against the CoC, but i say go for it... I wouldnt mind hearing a few questions, if only to remember the "Glory Days". They'll pass you by, glory days ... um... where am i? |
| Saihtam01-26-05, 06:55 AM | Looks like you overlooked the right answer. It's me, always me. :evillaugh |
| Draco Strang01-26-05, 07:10 AM | Looks like you overlooked the right answer. It's me, always me. :evillaugh Come on guys, everyone knows it's Belkar. |
| Dragon Rider01-26-05, 04:23 PM | I think it'd be cool, just someone might want to make sure it doesnt fall off the first page because we wouldn't want the thread to die |
| Emrick Blackthorn01-27-05, 12:33 AM | But seriously... I am not sure if its against the CoC, but i say go for it... I looked at the CoC, and as far as I can see, there should be no problems doing it. I see that there has been over 100 views at this point on the topic, so there must be some interest in it. So, I'm gonna try this and see what happens and I hope you all play. |
| Emrick Blackthorn01-27-05, 12:36 AM | ROUND 1 Lv 1) How long can a wizard retain a spell that he or she has memorized? a. 24 hours b. One week c. Until it is cast or removed by magic d. Until it is replaced by another Lv 2) True or False? Because of their empathic link, a wizard can see through the eyes of his or her familiar. LV 3) How often can a wizard attempt the find familiar spell? LV 4) How much room does one spell take up in a wizard's spellbook? LV 5) A wizard's spellbooks are his most prized possession, his treasure, his passion. They can take a wide variety of forms -- huge bound volumes, scrolls, clay tables, and so forth. All spellbooks have two things in common, however: 1) they must be absolutely flawlessly crafted of the highest quality materials and 2) they are very expensive. How much can a wizard expect to pay for both standard and traveling spellbooks? |
| pentagonal_penguin01-27-05, 05:26 AM | This is a great idea! Other people should just ask trivia questions too - that way there are more of them. Here are my pitiful attempts, without referencing anything. ROUND 1 Lv 1) How long can a wizard retain a spell that he or she has memorized? a. 24 hours b. One week c. Until it is cast or removed by magic d. Until it is replaced by another almost c) - until cast or expended. (ie spellpool debt, arcane strike) Lv 2) True or False? Because of their empathic link, a wizard can see through the eyes of his or her familiar. False LV 3) How often can a wizard attempt the find familiar spell? Not applicable in 3/3.5 LV 4) How much room does one spell take up in a wizard's spellbook? A number of pages equal to the spell level, 1 page for cantrips LV 5) A wizard's spellbooks are his most prized possession, his treasure, his passion. Hmmm. 20gp per spellbook? After checking - 4/5. Spellbooks cost 15gp. Edit - How do you make quotes inside spoilers work? |
| BeyondFated01-27-05, 08:11 AM | Here I go, there are no references, except from my memory. Round 1) The correct answer is C. Round 2) False, and empathetic link only conveys emotions. Round 3) I belive once per day until one is found. Once it dies, the spell cannot be cast again for a year and a day. Round 4) It takes up one page per spell level. Round 5) Around 100-200gp? |

All spellbooks have two things in common, however: 1) they must be absolutely flawlessly crafted of the highest quality materials and 2) they are very expensive. How much can a wizard expect to pay for both standard and traveling spellbooks? No idea. Theres only 1 kind of spellbook in dnd 3.5 |
| BeyondFated01-27-05, 01:43 PM | I'm a bit confused by the rules, should we answer in 2ed or 3.xed? I answered (to the best of my ability) in 2ed, and a few other people answered in 3.xed. I wouldn't want to look the fool because I don't know the rules... |
| edgelett01-27-05, 07:05 PM | Since this is a 2nd ed trivia game, i'll try to answer with 2nd ed answers. Lv 1) c. How much can a wizard expect to pay for both standard and traveling spellbooks? 500 gp for a standard, 1000 gp for traveling |
| Dragon Rider01-28-05, 02:41 PM | 1) C 2) True 3) Once per day until it is sucessful. 4) 1 page per level plus a random number (not quite sure how this is generated) 5) Both spellbooks (traveling and otherwise) are 5,000gp EDIT: All of this is according to Core Rules 2.0 |
| Emrick Blackthorn01-28-05, 11:24 PM | I'm a bit confused by the rules, should we answer in 2ed or 3.xed? I answered (to the best of my ability) in 2ed, and a few other people answered in 3.xed. I wouldn't want to look the fool because I don't know the rules... BeyondFated~ I would like to see if everyone can answer them using 2ed. If you don't know 2ed and would like to use 3.x, that's fine, just make a reference after your answer to where the info can be found (what book & page number). I'm doing this so everyone can have fun playing, plus I'm trying to compare the differences between the two. I have yet to make the plunge into 3.x and this may help me make up my mind. ~Emrick |
| Emrick Blackthorn01-28-05, 11:39 PM | This is a great idea! Other people should just ask trivia questions too - that way there are more of them. Pentagonal~ Thanks! I'm glad you liked the idea. But for now, I would just like it if we could just stick to my questions. I'm trying to compare the differences between 2ed and 3.x. I have yet to make the plunge into 3.x and this may help me make up my mind. The game includes 600 question cards total (100 Lv 1, 100 Lv 2, 200 Lv 3, 100 Lv 4 and 100 Lv 5) so for now I think we'll be in good shape. Maybe after we do them all, everyone could start asking others based on 3.x taking turns once a week. ~Emrick |
| Dragon Rider01-30-05, 01:44 PM | :bump: |
| Dragon Rider01-31-05, 01:19 PM | :waits: :bump: this is the last time I'm putting this on the first page. if this thread is doomed to fail than so be it but i thought it was a good idea |
| Emrick Blackthorn01-31-05, 08:15 PM | Dragon Rider~ Thanks for the :bump:'s! I was planning on waiting until Friday to post the answers and then next round. I thought doing them once a week was a good idea, giving everyone a chance play. Since it was the weekend, I guess most people would have seen the game by now. I know it's had a ton of views already, I just wish more people would have responded by now. I'm still going to wait until this Friday to do the post. If more people don't respond by then, maybe I'll just have to try and do them twice a week for the folks that do wish to play. Don't worry I wont let this topic die! :ghosted: Thanks Again! ~Emrick |
| shift24401-31-05, 10:42 PM | ROUND 1 Lv 1) How long can a wizard retain a spell that he or she has memorized? a. 24 hours b. One week c. Until it is cast or removed by magic d. Until it is replaced by anotherI would say, C) in general cases, although D) is applicable as well. #REF: PH 3.5, pg 177-178 Lv 2) True or False? Because of their empathic link, a wizard can see through the eyes of his or her familiar.I would say, False. #REF: PH 3.5, pg 53 LV 4) How much room does one spell take up in a wizard's spellbook?I would say, One page per spell level, to a minimum of one page per cantrip. #REF: PH 3.5, pg 179 LV 5) A wizard's spellbooks are his most prized possession, his treasure, his passion. They can take a wide variety of forms -- huge bound volumes, scrolls, clay tables, and so forth. All spellbooks have two things in common, however: 1) they must be absolutely flawlessly crafted of the highest quality materials and 2) they are very expensive. How much can a wizard expect to pay for both standard and traveling spellbooks?I would say, A standard blank "travelling" spellbook costs 15gp. Varying materials used in construction (and protection) of the spellbook can increase costs. #REF: PH 3.5, pg 128 :P * Please, highlight to read answers. |
| Dragon Rider01-31-05, 10:50 PM | Think nothing of it Emrick, and sory about the last, I hope it didn't come off as anything nasty...I will be eagerly awaiting the results come friday. |
| Dragon Rider01-31-05, 10:53 PM | I have yet to make the plunge into 3.x and this may help me make up my mind. I too had not taken the plunge until just four days ago. I found it quite refreshing ( i even DM'd!!!) Alhtough when i return to my original group (who is still playing 2nd edition, I'll look at things and say "What the heck do those numbers mean!" My suggesting is to start a whole new set of characters and just run two adventures at once, but sometimes that gets confusing... |
| Emrick Blackthorn02-01-05, 08:54 PM | Think nothing of it Emrick, and sory about the last, I hope it didn't come off as anything nasty...I will be eagerly awaiting the results come friday. Dragon~ Don't worry, you didn't come off being nasty. You were just concerned and trying to be helpful that's all. Looking at all the answers so far everyone is doing real good. Even some of the answers that are wrong (answered in 2ed) are really close to the correct ones. Plus, it's really cool to see how close the 3.x answers are to the 2ed. ~Emrick |
| BeyondFated02-02-05, 08:45 AM | Soooo... Not to be rude or nuthin', but can we get the answers, and a new set a questions? I would really like to know how close I was to being right, and a chance to answer some new material. |
| Dragon Rider02-02-05, 06:55 PM | I do beleive that Emrick stated that he will give the answers and post new questions on friday (he wants it to be weekly so that everyone can get a chance) EDIT:I'm still going to wait until this Friday to do the post. If more people don't respond by then, maybe I'll just have to try and do them twice a week for the folks that do wish to play |

LV 5) A wizard's spellbooks are his most prized possession, his treasure, his passion. They can take a wide variety of forms -- huge bound volumes, scrolls, clay tables, and so forth. | Emrick Blackthorn02-04-05, 08:48 AM | Everyone~ You all did a wonderful job at answering round 1! Now it is time to get ready for round 2. Before I post round 2, there needs to be one little change based on the quote below. The game includes 600 question cards total (100 Lv 1, 100 Lv 2, 200 Lv 3, 100 Lv 4 and 100 Lv 5) ... As you all can see there are 200 Lv 3 questions. That kind of throws everything off, so I'll be asking two Lv 3 questions. They will be posted as Lv 3.0) and Lv 3.5. ~Emrick |

What do they often seek? I'm pretty clueless on this, but I'm gonna take a guess, robe of the archmagi. Yeah i'll have to go with everything he said except for #5 (though i am just as clueless as he is): Maybe a few levels of wizard? So he'll have to seek a master Wizard to teach him maybe? Perhaps a few spell books? |
| Dragon Rider02-04-05, 04:28 PM | 1) true 2) False 3) White 3.5) Dracolisk 4) Immunity to acid and spider climb ( but only on stone surfaces) 5) Spellbooks |

| Emrick Blackthorn02-09-05, 07:52 PM | What are you all telling me? You're going to let this dragon get the best of you? I will be unable to post the answers on Friday, so look for them tomorrow. |

| Emrick Blackthorn02-10-05, 08:52 AM | Everyone~ You all did great with Round 2, even with question Lv 5. Before I post Round 3, I need to ask: Is everyone enjoying this? Last time in Round 1 more of you answered. This time not even half as many of you did. ~Emrick |
| Lord Lorac Silvanos02-10-05, 09:06 AM | Very enjoyable :D I think part of the reason why people don't answer is that if they feel that the correct answers have been submitted they might not want to repeat them. |
| Dragon Rider02-10-05, 03:29 PM | Yes Emrick this really is alot of fun. Really, the only thing i cans ee that would help alleviate the problem of people feeling that they are copying someone else is that they could PM their answer to you and you post everything else on this thread...but that might not work to well. |
| edgelett02-10-05, 05:32 PM | Everyone~ You all did great with Round 2, even with question Lv 5. Before I post Round 3, I need to ask: Is everyone enjoying this? Last time in Round 1 more of you answered. This time not even half as many of you did. ~Emrick Yeah, loving it Emrick, keep em coming! |
| edgelett02-13-05, 08:02 PM | so are we going to see Round 3?? Maybe you can do a different thread for each round, to save confusion? |
| shift24402-13-05, 09:09 PM | Suggestion: Only ONE answer per post. You can choose to answer any question as yet unanswered, or if you have a different answer than already posted. | Emrick Blackthorn02-13-05, 10:08 PM | Everyone~ Hello! Sorry for the delay. I had a very busy weekend, plus some PC problems. I'm glad to see that you are all enjoying this! I should have Round 3 posted some time tomorrow (Monday). I think for this round we'll still let it open to everyone. We'll see how it goes again, if things go the same as last time we'll try Shift's suggestion for Round 4. I think it sounds like a good idea. Suggestion: Only ONE answer per post. You can choose to answer any question as yet unanswered, or if you have a different answer than already posted. | Emrick Blackthorn02-14-05, 09:00 PM | Everyone~ Sorry! I forgot today was the big V. Day. I didn't have time to prep the next round. I should have it posted no later than Wednesday. Once again, Sorry! ~Emrick |

| Callahan02-14-05, 11:30 PM | ROUND 2 Lv 1) True or False? All true dragons have breath weapons? What about Fang Dragons? |
| shift24402-15-05, 01:10 AM | sorry edgelett. i din't quite see that people will read it that way. :( clarification: i din't mean that one cannot post answers already posted if they are the same, it's just a suggestion in response to those who might not want to re-post something already posted. it's just that to promote more participation, it is suggested that you answer any one instead of all six within your post, and leave unanswered questions to prompt possible posts. if indeed the poor response was due to "lazyness of reposting similar answers." it is well and fine if all answers are already posted and you wish to post your full set. i did say that it will not be strictly enforced, and anyway, if you disagree nothing is to stop you from posting an alternative answer... perhaps a rewording is in order. anyways, i think it's better to bow out, and leave Emrick with the maintanence of the rules of the game. :D |
| Dragon Rider02-15-05, 11:19 PM | What about Fang Dragons? i do believe that Fang Dragons are not included in Second Edition I could be wrong though |
| abisai02-16-05, 12:16 PM | I love this thread! I think part of the reason why people don't answer is that if they feel that the correct answers have been submitted they might not want to repeat them. This is why there may be fewer posts - if someone's already got my guesses represented I feel no need to post it again. Plus I like to skim through for the Q's and A's quickly, so I like that there are fewer guesses. Please, keep at it. :D |
| Emrick Blackthorn02-16-05, 08:51 PM | Everyone~ As you may have all noticed by now, I've been trying to "theme" the questions. With the way this past week has been going I didn't really have time to do that. So, I just picked random cards from each level. What do you know? We do have a "theme". I hope you all enjoy you random wondering monster encounters. ~Emrick ROUND 3 Lv 1) What particularly hideous aspect of a medusa's head also serves as a weapon? Lv 2) How many attack forms will all dragons eventually attain with age (not counting spell use)?
