Each episode starts with a bunch of geeks sitting around a table, with one of them delivering the hook that is supposed to jump start the adventure. The show could get corporate sponsorship from Cheetos, Dominos, Coca-Cola, and Clearasil.

Yeah, but do the sponsors really want to send the message: "Use our products--be like these guys!"? I suppose if the target audience didn't extend beyond other geeks...

i was thinking that a D&D tv show would be cool...but for it to work you would have to have it almost like star trek (to site more geek culture) in that each episode should be a stand alone story, for example a wandering fighter and his rogue buddy do good deeds for money, but with no major plot or "campaign", more like just a series of adventures. campaigns would mess up the serial aspect of the series. there would be characters who come and go, different themed episodes, character development, such as oh...i dunno, the rogue learning magic and multiclassing into a wizard, or the fighter finding religion and becoming a paladin. the campaign setting would be a great backdrop for the show, unlike campaign settings used in major motion pictures which will remain nameless....three-eyed purple dudes???...it would feature real-world type politics and religions which would squabble and draw the main characters in, but not become the focus of the show. in this case it would be better if the characters did not seem to be part of the game world, but set apart from it. maybe they could dig up an airship or something and fly around doing random adventures....

Sorry. Dr. Pepper is far geekier. Not MOUNTAIN DEW geeky, but up in that league.

In theory, a D&D show would be a wonderful thing to watch, since D&D is open ended as can be and has plenty of oppurtunity.

In reality, it won't happen. The fault of which lies in many hands, including our own. Simply put, if anyone took it up, a good part of the community would never watch it because no matter how well it is made, the community will find troubles in it, even if they only exist in their own minds or are completely opinion.

Ill give you a couple of examples:

Psionics: Add or don't? Either way, the creator loses. I would say 1/5 of the community would not watch it if they had it, and if they did not have them, a different 1/5 would not watch it since they think its an insult to anyone who has it.

What world?: No matter what world they chose, people would not watch just based on that. Greyhawk? The Faerun and Eberron fans would be mad. But even bigger, people would be mad that it did not live up to their rose colored view of it, no matter the quality or interpretation. Faerun? People would say its just an excuse to have Drizzt, even if it didnt. If it didnt, the Drizzt fans would be mad. Eberron? The world is far more technological than the classic D&D.

What edition?: I know at least one long time D&D fan who would refuse to watch a D&D show if it wasnt 1st edition. Im sure there are plenty who are so loyal to editions that they would not watch a show based on that.

Not only that, but every time something discernable would be used, the community would analyze it until it was beaten to death. "MAGIC MISSLES are not THAT shade of blue!"

If you dont believe me, look at The Lord of the Rings. Talk to a few Tolkien fanboys and they will find ways that the movie did not live up to the book. And that was after about 150 mil was sunk into each of the 3 movies, great actors were added, and the best in the business made it. Think they're willing to do that for D&D?

And that is before you get into the fact that show producers have nothing but dollar signs in their mind and are unwilling to sink money into anything that wont have an utterly huge and loyal fanbase. Not to mention they fear backlash from people who think D&D is evil. It might not matter that they wont watch the show, but they fear it may cause these people to boycott other shows on the network.

Top that off with the whole "geek" view of D&D and try to sell it.

I drink green tea out of a can, so I must not be a geek either -turns from those he was talking to and stats- ok my Fighter attempts to chop the necromaner demilich in half with his +5 vorpal flaming keen cold iron Orcish battle axe -rolls- damn I missed!

Yea I'm not a geek. (lol)

Dungeons and Dragon's did have an animated show back in the 80's. I've never viewed it myself, but I've heard down the grape vine it's ok.

Now my problem with a D&D TV show it the suggestion that each 30 minute/hour espisode be a stand alone story. You would have to have arcs. Perhaps stretching for a single season.

After the twelve shows they make a season, move to a new arc. Characters could certinly reemerge, though not nessiarly in their own arcs. A dual scimitar weilding Drow will of course always be allowed a cameo slot when ever he wishes. Lord knows their's enough clones to keep him going from Eden to Rapture.

Just my two copper peices anyways.

I drink Schweps Lemonade. It has real lemon in it!

Didn't they do a cartoon of D&D once?

Besides the note that Star treck is a series of stand alone episodes is quite innacurate. Many if not all of the episodes are set up visa-vi the overall plotline at least making some referances to it in broad terms. Seeing how DMs usually have a series of adventures that build into a story arc this fits quite well. Mind I think the new Doctor who format is better, 13 40 min episodes with a few two parters all with an over-reaching theme.

A D&D show (similar to the 90s Hercules, Xena, Roar, Sinbad, etc but far better) would be great. Each season could be a campaign and for the next season they could have a new group. :) That could be fun and interested to have a new cast each season.

No way. Live-action fantasy/sci-fi television series always look cheesy, feature bad actors, and have horrible scripts. I would hate to see what they would do with a D&D series.

Make it animated, but not anime.

They had done a D&D tv show decades ago. It focused on some kids displaced from this world by an amusement park ride and thown into a D&D landscape. Once there they had an initial encounter with Tiamat and the BBEG and were appointed classes by the Dungeon Master. After that the story was of them trying to get home.

D&D isn't a bad choice for a fantasy series if you can overlook how presentantion doesn't always match expectation. The form should be like Star Trek. Deep Space Nine (the best one in my opinion) featured a big overall story (a campain) but each episode basically stands alone (adventure) with some references to the bigger story. Unfortunately to do it justice with a budget it would likely need to be animated.

A story taking place in Sigil, having inter-Faction pollitics, would rule. It would have to be animated. Live action would make it cheese core beyond the normal realm of nerd.
But yeah...sigil...add in a little bloodwar nonsense from time to time. Demon plots that overlap the character plot....hhmmm

have it so a season would roughly follow a group of low level character and their adventures. End of the season, they acheive a bunch of goals, ascend to factotum stasis and become movers and shakers in Sigil.

next season starts with a new group of characters, but continues the plot outline of the previous season. And the the characters from the previous season would make camio's and what-not.

if only it could happen.....

There was a press release (http://www.wizards.com/news/pressrelease.asp?20010918a), and then 18 months later (http://www.gamingreport.com/article.php?sid=7514) ...

Both B5 and DS9 enjoy having started with a main arc, even though we don't always be reminded of that (for DS9, it relates to Sisko having a connection with the Celestial Prophets and Bajor).

Personally, I'm more interested in mini-arcs, a format that Manny Coto used in the fourth and final season of ENT. After all, most archetypal D&D adventures usually takes more than one nightly (or daytime) sessions.

Er. There was a DnD TV show, awful though it may have been. I remember watching it when I was small.
There's also Record of Lodoss War. Its an anime based on the creator's DnD campaign, and is supposedly really good.

I have the full set of that anime. It was made mid-late 1990's I think, which means its either first or second edition based.

If you play the old editions, you can really see the game in the show. Of course, it doesnt follow the rules perfectly.

Its a pretty good anime if taken with a grain of salt. The translation wasnt too well done, and the voice actors arent great, but the animation is good and the story is pretty good.

Either you're referring to Wizards & Warriors starring Jeff Conaway (Taxi, B5), or Covington's Cross that featured two stars from the movie Excalibur.
