| Ramza0Tyr03-12-06, 10:46 AM | Hello. A few months ago I returned to D&D after being away for many years. I see that there have been many changes. Is there a place where the books that have been made for version 3.5 are listed? I noticed that some books (on their title pages) note something along the lines of "this book uses material from version 3.5", but not all seem to say so that I would expect to (based on the publication date). So, rather than drive myself crazy, I thought that I should stop and ask for some guidance. Thanks. Ramza |
| Julian_Grimm03-12-06, 11:06 AM | While I can't give you a complete listing I can give you a rule of thumb for what is 3.5 and what isn't: Anything from 2000 to early 2003 is 3e and anything from mid 2003 to present is 3.5 hope that helps. |
| Torack03-12-06, 11:07 AM | AFAI recall all books published after the publication of the core v3.5 books should be considered to be part of the latest edition. There are a couple of books published on the border (Ghostwalk, Savage Species, Book of Exalted Deeds, FR: Unapproachable East and others). Ghostwalk and Savage Species are 3rd Edition, whereas Book of Exalted Deeds and Unapproachable East are v3.5 according to the Errata files. |
| Zherog03-12-06, 11:22 AM | Book of Exalted Deeds is absolutely 3.5 - it was printed in October '03, three months after the switch-over. Torack's timeline is correct. The be specific on the dates, the 3.5 core books were released in July '03. Anything published after that uses the 3.5 system. Anything before that uses 3.0 - though a few books (Savage Species, Fiend Folio, Unapproachable East, Races of Faerun, maybe a few others) use a sort of 3.25 system. They have the 3.5 skills (Survival instead of Wilderness Lore for example), but use 3.0 rules for things such as weapon sizes, DR, and so on. |
| Ramza0Tyr03-13-06, 10:14 AM | Wow, I thought for sure this would be made clear somewhere. I guess it's not a big deal if you "gamed" through that period of time. First, a question. Are the books that have the notation on their title pages the books that are version 3.25? Second, a possible plan. Would folks check out the product list below and identify which version each rules book is based on? (As in, you own and use the book and know it is 100% v.3.5, 3.25(?), or 3.0.) If it is one of the mixed books, please be sure to identify it! This will allow (1) a list to be available as a resource, and (2) each person can act as a reviewer so to catch any mistakes that are made. I suggest, to make the collection of information easier, that everyone identify which year a product is from when you post which version of the rules that book is based on. I would also suggest running through them in reverse chronological order...so start with the newest and move to the past. Here are the 2003 products taken from Wizards product page, in reverse chronological order. | darkness ninja of light03-13-06, 03:23 PM | Whoa, what for? That's such a huge list (though I can very easily say that the "Player's Handbook", "Dungeon Master's Guide", and "Monster Manual" released in 2003 are 3.5...) Just find when 3.5 was released (what month...) and anything released after that is 3.5. There is no such thing as 3.25, I believe. Even then, 3.0 and 3.5 aren't really that different. There's a "3.5 update" sheet you can print off on the site and use old books. I knowingly bought a 3.0 book after 3.5 came out, and I even found specific updates for it later. Edit: Ah, you have the dates on there. So...I guess that would mean starting with the Player's Handbook and going UP, about all those are 3.5 |
| Zherog03-13-06, 04:27 PM | I really don't know what's so difficult about this. Anything published after the 3.5 core books in July '03 uses the 3.5 system. Anything before uses the 3.0 system, though sometimes it references small pieces of 3.5 material. Your request below is made more difficult because it includes novels as well as stuff for the miniatures game. But here goes... Dragoneye Expansion Pack Accessory Miniatures 12/2003 D&D Miniatures Entry Pack Accessory Miniatures 09/2003 Harbinger Expansion Pack Accessory Miniatures 09/2003 The above list is all miniatures products, and therefore neither 3.0 or 3.5 - it's its own game. Draconomicon Accessory Dungeons & Dragons Andy Collins, James Wyatt, Skip Williams 11/2003 Complete Warrior Accessory Dungeons & Dragons Andy Collins, David Noonan, Ed Stark 11/2003 Book of Exalted Deeds Accessory Dungeons & Dragons James Wyatt, Darrin Drader, Christopher Perkins 10/2003 Underdark Accessory Forgotten Realms Bruce R. Cordell, Gwendolyn F.M. Kestrel, Jeff Quick 10/2003 Miniatures Handbook Accessory Miniatures Michael Donais, Skaff Elias, Rob Heinsoo, Jonathan Tweet 10/2003 D&D Core Rulebook Gift Set Core Game Product Dungeons & Dragons 09/2003 Dragonlance Campaign Setting Accessory Dragonlance Margaret Weis, Don Perrin, Jamie Chambers, Christopher Coyle 08/2003 Player's Handbook Core Game Product Dungeons & Dragons Jonathan Tweet, Monte Cook, and Skip Williams 07/2003 Dungeon Master's Guide Core Game Product Dungeons & Dragons Monte Cook, Jonathan Tweet, and Skip Williams 07/2003 Monster Manual Core Game Product Dungeons & Dragons Skip Williams, Jonathan Tweet, and Monte Cook 07/2003 The above list is all 3.5. Best of the Realms, The Anthology Forgotten Realms 11/2003 Players of Gilean: Tales from the War of Souls, The Anthology Dragonlance Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, ed. 02/2003 These are novels. Ghostwalk Accessory Dungeons & Dragons Monte Cook & Sean K Reynolds 06/2003 Unapproachable East Accessory Forgotten Realms Richard Baker, Matt Forbeck, Sean K Reynolds 05/2003 Fiend Folio Accessory Dungeons & Dragons Eric Cagle, Jesse Decker, James Jacobs, Erik Mona, Matthew Sernett, Chris Thomasson, James Wyatt 04/2003 Arms and Equipment Guide Accessory Dungeons & Dragons Eric Cagle, Jesse Decker, Jeff Quick, Rich Redman, James Wyatt 03/2003 Races of Faerūn Accessory Forgotten Realms Sean K Reynolds, Matt Forbeck, James Jacobs, Eric L. Boyd 03/2003 Savage Species Accessory Dungeons & Dragons Jennifer Clarke Wilkes, David Eckelberry, Rich Redman, Sean K Reynolds 02/2003 These are 3.0. Fiend Folio, Savage Species, and Unapproachable East all make references to 3.5 skills, but as best as I recall contain no other 3.5 material. |
| Ramza0Tyr03-14-06, 07:52 AM | I really don't know what's so difficult about this. Forget I brought it up. Have a good one. Ramza |
| Dragonan03-14-06, 04:20 PM | I agree with Ramza0Tyr, that it is a little hard to Identify what is 3.5 and what is not. I would like a link where I could just see all the rule books that is 3.5 and another where you could see everything that is made to 3.5 in Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Dragonlance, etc. Wizards homepage is not the best to identify this even when I tryed there product search and that just confused me even more. The reason I'm saything this is because I'm thinking of returning my group to D&D and I would like to find a list of books I should get and I what not to get and that is not that easy on the webpage like one could hope. If the product search just had an extra search field for versions it would be much more usable. |
| Julian_Grimm03-14-06, 05:19 PM | Outside of the core books everything works with either 3e or revised 3e. I'm actually using the 3e PHB with the revised DMG and Monster Manual and have very few if any problems. My books range from early 3e to post revision. You might need a few adjustments and such but again they are very, very minor. I don't know why everyone things there is such a major difference in the versions. |

Anything in or after July '03 uses the 3.5 rules. Really - somebody explain to me why this is so difficult to figure out. I don't get it. All the information is right there in the catalog, just waiting for you to read it. |
| Ramza0Tyr03-15-06, 09:04 AM | Thanks, Dragonan, for sticking your neck out! :D <<<SNIP>>> I don't know why everyone things there is such a major difference in the versions. Let me quote the D&D v.3.5 Accessory Update (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20030718a): The purpose of this booklet is not to provide a comprehensive list of everything that has changed with the 3.5 revision. The changes are too large in number and varied in scope to be able to provide an all-inclusive inventory. <<<SNIP>>> Really - somebody explain to me why this is so difficult to figure out. I don't get it. All the information is right there in the catalog, just waiting for you to read it. Zherog, assuming that I am misreading the tone of your post, let me answer your question. (And, I'm glad that you like my use of the product page, which is helpful.) First, as I mention in my posts above, I did not play through the period of time that these v.3.0 was released, nor did I play when v.3.5 was released. It was only during 2005 that I began role playing again. I basically jumped from AD&D to v.3.5. If I had played through that period of time, perhaps I would find it as simple as that. Second, I also mentioned above that I noted the language in the title page of certain books. I noticed that some books (on their title pages) note something along the lines of "this book uses material from version 3.5", but not all seem to say so that I would expect to (based on the publication date). Those two seem reason enough to be cautious and should show that I didn't just blindly post my question. I put in a little effort before turning here. There is also the fact that no WotC employee has posted this information. While I value your opinion, it doesn't carry the same weight as an official response. This is why I posted my follow up and encouraged folks to chip in. One of the intrinsic values to membership in a community is taking advantage of community knowledge. However, if only one person chimes in, it isn't really community knowledge. But, like I said above...if nobody else is interested...fooooohhgetabot it! Later. Ramza |

They mean they aren't going to go through every little change and spelling error (on page 42 change this....on page 43 change it too...on page 45 change the same correction we made on pages 42 and 43...it's mentioned on page 50 too...change it....also if you look in the Forgotten Realms book pages 56,72,etc.etc.etc. it's there too. Good it's done. Now let's go on to changing each and every individual monster in the Monster Manual due to the minor changes we made.). Basically, they are going to give a general guide for minor stuff that changes everywhere (for use in converting the 3.0 books besides the core three) and more specific stuff for more specific changes made not-so-everywhere. They wouldn't have called it 3.5 if it couldn't still be used with 3.0. |

What I didn't get is why - after the question was answered - numerous folks continue to ask the same thing. That was what my exasperated comment was aimed at. ;) There is also the fact that no WotC employee has posted this information. It's rare that a WotC employee will answer questions on the boards, unfortunately. When a new book comes out, some of the writers (Richard Baker particularly comes to mind) will hang around and answer question. Mark Jindra will answer website based questions from time to time. I'm seen Andy Collins post - but not in a really long time. I'd love to see the writers and other staff more active on the forums - though I understand why they aren't. :) But, like I said above...if nobody else is interested...fooooohhgetabot it! I know you don't know me, but trust me on this one. WotC did not release any 3.0 material after the 3.5 core books came out. |

I also want to add this from the 3.5 PHB: But also rest assured that this is an upgrade of the d20 system, not a new edition of the game. this revision is compatable with all existing products, and those products can be used with the revision with only minor adjustments So there is no big difference 3e can be used with 3.5 and 3.5 can be used with 3e. |
