Do D&D video games use 2nd ed. rules, or 3.5? And are they anything like the tabletop version?

You might have better luck in somewhere like the digital DnD forum (I don't go there much so I don't know if its suitable or not) still, on topic:

Neverwinter nights uses 3.0 , NWN 2 when it comes out I believe will use 3.5 , Neverwinter nights is a good game, I believe Baldur's gate which predates it uses 2.0 ed rules but I don't have that so I can't comment.

Temple of Elemental Evil (Atari/Someone Else) was a 3.5 (mostly) adaptation of, get this, the old Temple of Elemental Evil module.

I know Icewind Dale II (PC game) uses 3.0. The Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games (GCN/PS2/X-Box for 1, X-Box/PS2 for 2) seem to use something else - it may be 2e, or just a variant of the actual system for thier own purposes, I couldn't tell since I wasn't around for 2e.

Baldur's gate I & II both use AD&D 2.0 rules. If dark alliance is that one that was on gamecube, then it didnt use any D&D system that i'm aware of, its incredibly different from I & II, both of which are very good games, mind you

Despite it's bugs, ToEE is an awesome game.

I'm re-playing it at the moment. It's a shame that it was a one player only game though.

Of all the D&D PC games I've seen, ToEE had the best combat (and general) interface...

I love ToEE, too. I've completed it multiple times already. Its combat engine resembles the 3.5 rules moreso than other games I've seen.

Anyone know if they will ever make another turn-based D&D computer game? It seems that real-time action is the trend these days. Neverwinter Nights is currently the popular one now. I never liked the real-time games.

I'm a big fan of turn based games as well, ToEE is by far my favorite D&D PC game (barring the horrible bugs that is). Unfortunately, as you mentioned, RTS is the craze now, and I don't see than changing as the technology gets better and better and online games become even more popular.

Tried to play the demo, but my graphics card was not good enough to play for a longer while. It's seems to be an ok game, but I got no Eberron-feel whatsoever which was the point of playing the game for me, and the rest felt like a more in depth version of those Star Craft missions where you only had a small force that had to survive through some maze, mixed with a bit of less good Warcraft 3. So, It's ok, but not more.

Baldur's Gate I & II - 2e
Icewind Dale I - 2e
Pool of Radiance - mostly 3.0
Icewind Dale II - 3.0
Neverwinter Nights - 3.0
Temple of Elemental Evil - 3.5
Dark Alliance - N/A

Mind you, whenever a system is adapted for Real Time, changes will be made.

Of the Turn-based games, TOEE has the most accurate rendition of Pen&Paper rules I've ever seen, while Pool of Radiance has a bizzare amalgam of 2e and 3e. I'd reccomend buying and patching the former and staying away from the latter.

As for Dragonshard, I played the demo and thought it was fairly a run-of-the-mill RTS; it just had lizardfolk instead of space marines or doughboys.

Not really. Both games have similar systems and neither really has anything to do with actual DnD rules, of any edition.

It was influenced by those editions of DnD with abilities such as whirlwind attack, Dodge, toughness, bull rush and others

I've played NWN (Neverwinter Nights, Forgotten Realms) which is 3rd Edition, DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online, Eberron) is 3.5 Edition.

I played Dragonshard as well. I was kinda overwhelmed, but overall disappointed maybe, because I had no idea of the Eberron environment maybe. It's worth a try out at least, if you got a shot, but like someone before me said, the video card needs to be almost top notch to try.

I think the Baldur's Gate series were best D&D computer games. They were also the last to use the 2nd Edition rules I believe. If you want to play a good D&D game, Baldur's Gate is what you're after.

I can't believe that Planescape: Torment has been left off the list. It's by far the best of the AD&D games.

The Knights of the Old republic series uses Star Wars d20 I believe.

True, Planescape was awesome. It uses a modified 2e ruleset.

I read somewhere that an independant mod team was going to try and mod ToEE to recreate some other classic modules, like Keep on the Borderlands...

I really hope they succeed.

As a few people have said, ToEE has an awesome interface, and to me is the most accurate representation of 3.5 (or any version) pen and paper rules I have seen.

I'm not sure if Troika/Atari still have rights to make the games.

I hope WoTC commisions more 3.5 turn based games...

I was really disapointed by Dragonshard. But I'm still hoping that they eventually release another Eberron RTS that both feels more like an Ebberon game, and fixes the issues Dragonshard had. Maybe one that Atari doesn't have a hand in.

I'm not sure about the Forgotten Realms, but that also seems like a good setting for a real-time strategy game.
