Hi folks,

As the days shorten (and boy are they ever short in Seattle -- it gets dark out there fast!), I wanted to wish everyone on the boards a happy start to the holiday season.

We’ve made a few changes to the D&D website in recent days –- for starters, making better use of the Additional Articles section on the main page, so that it now also tabs through the latest Polls and Community News. Speaking of polls, we’re knee-deep in our latest Creature Competition (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20050930a); the warforged titan currently reigns supreme, but the brain in a jar (riding an iron golem) has come on strong. Design & Development’s You Craft the Creature (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dd/20051014a) has also entered the next stage of voting; right now, a mastermind aberration of CR 15+ has been determined… but what environment (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dd/20051111a) does it occupy? Plus, this week we’re soliciting from players the special abilities (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=7729578) this new creature might have, to vote on in the next round.

We’ve also reworked the Articles (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/features) and Archives (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/archives) sections a bit, making it that much easier to find the articles you’re most interested in reading. Which is also where the official D&D newsletter comes into play. If you’ve noticed the shiny green graphic on the lefthand of the page, it takes you to our newsletter signup, offering a digest of website content –- so you’ll never have to miss an article of your favorite series.

As far as series go, Matt Sernett continues his exploration of Undermountain (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/archfr/ru), gradually leading up to its conclusion with room #24. The next Mind’s Eye (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/psi) is currently in the works -– it took a little longer than anticipated, as the writers have crafted a brand new prestige class, based on Heroes of Horror.

To further help celebrate Heroes of Horror, we’ve also published Bruce Cordell’s 3.5 revision of the classic module, Tomb of Horrors (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/oa/20051031a)! We hoped you enjoy it –- and managed to survive a bit longer through than some of its original explorers (if any module encapsulated the TPK mentality, this was the one). What’s next in the lineup? As a special holiday treat, Andy Collins, Gwen Kestrel and James Wyatt took a crack at bringing one more 1st edition module up to 3.5 gameplay. Which one? I’ll give you a hint. Three actually: Whelm. Wave. Blackrazor. Oh -– and this time, the inverted ziggurat is far less easy to bypass!

What else is in the works? Players have been demanding downloadable character sheets, from Magic of Incarnum, which I'll agree are overdue. And Eludecia’s adventure is still in the works – a first draft has been written for the Succubus Paladin, with much of the crunch and final map still needin’ some work –- look for it early next year! Plus, there’ll be more creature stats from Fight Club (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/fc) and Elite Opponents (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/eo) (this month covering the Tarrasque (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/eo/20051109a)), many of which came from the first creature competition (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20050510a).

Of course, we always welcome your feedback. If there are things you like or don’t like about the D&D website, certain content you'd like to see, or an idea for a column you wish we'd run, by all means please just us know. While updating classic modules won’t be a regular feature (we’d prefer to concentrate on the new modules we’re introducing to players, including the fantastic Fantastic Locations series), is there a module you like to see in a future update? As always, the conversation is very much appreciated! I'll continue to post on these boards, soliciting your feedback and letting you know what's coming up with the site.

Many thanks,
Bart Carroll

I actually miss a lot of the older things that were more useful than informational. I used to go to the site every couple of days. This year I've probably gone 30 times. While the map-a-week making printable versions of maps from the books may be a bit helpful, it's not nearly as nice as the old format which was similar to Maps of Mystery for Dungeon Magazine.

The consolidated lists are handy, but when new books are added, what's the problem with adding them into the alphabetical listings?

The whole Design and Development article feels rather flat, like it's missing something. I'm not sure what, though. Maybe it's just not that fun to look behind the curtain...

I'm highly disappointed in the Web Enhancements that have come out this year and late last year. They used to be in the "added value" category. Now they seem to be more of an example of how to use the product. The rest are simply modules that use the product, so one must hope that they have a group of PCs that particular level, or the adventure sits on your hard drive for a while. I rarely find the new WEs of any value whatso ever.

Speaking of adventures, there was a time when I waited with baited breath for the new Original Adventure each month. The fact that classic modules are being updated is VERY COOL. But could we get more than 3 or 4 adventures a year? Please!

The current look and feel of the site is better than it was a couple of years ago, but I haven't seen anything really innovative lately. All told, I find less and less to hold my interest on the site anymore. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that it used to be high crunch, which was nice, then high fluff, which wasn't too bad, and now is focused primarily on what's beyond the fourth wall. How to improve as a DM, how to improve as a PC, how the game is made, what products are coming out, how to use the products that are coming out, what artwork in in the products coming out. Honestly, for myself and many other people I play with, a resounding "who cares" sums up the majority of the past year's content.

Bring back more crunch and fluff. Leave some of the "behind the scenes" stuff behind the scenes. And see if there is a way to get the site to be more interactive. Some contests, perhaps. I know if a contest were run to find new spells (or feats, PrC's, monsters, etc.) for the game, and the best entries were offered up on the site, in an on-line spellbook perhaps, thousands would enter. Each contest would be similar, but not as extensive, as the Campaign Setting Search (all entries are property of WotC, etc.).The whole series of 'grassroots rules' would be popular because people would feel like they are influencing the game they love. The best part, for both Wizards and the winning authors, is that winning entries would be eligible for inclusion in future D&D products, with winners getting a complimentary copy of said book. I know a lot of people would be proud to show off their latest D&D book if they had their name in the credits. Why not try something like that once in a while? Who knows? You could even find a few people worth offering paying jobs to!

I guess I'm just not as interested in the current direction the site is going. But for all I know, I'm in the minority. So all of this is just my two cents.

I'd love to see a new version of The Temple of Elemental Evil! Hopefully, the authors could "fix" a few of the plot gaps in it namely:

1. The potential existence of the Elder Elemental God below the temple and the potential to free it (according to Gary Gygax's notes)

2. The Eye of Fire symbol actually being a black triangle with an inverted Y instead of a literal "flaming eye" symbol as misinterpreted by the artist (also according to Gary Gygax's notes)

3. A better explanation for Lareth, a human cleric of the Elder Elemental Eye and Lolth, who is interested in freeing Zuggtmoy, Lolth's enemy

4. Some connections with Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil such as a mentioning of the Temple of All Consumption in Mt. Stalagos in the Lortmil Mountains.

She did, and it was a pretty good article. But it doesn't cover the things mentioned above.

Get rid of the Flash movies/ads. If you can't, find a way to reduce download time, or better yet find a way to download the Flash ads AFTER all the web page's texts and graphics.

Yeah, the flash ads do nothing to compell me to buy new products, nor do they increase my awareness of them. In fact I get annoyed when I'm bombarded with flash ads for products in wich I have no interest. It's like watching a TV with one channel that airs the same three commercials over and over.

I enjoy the website content. My only critique is what you've done with the Mind's Eye column. We know you are trying to sell more product by tying the content to a recently release product and that, IMO, makes it ring hollow. If I want to buy a new book I'll buy it, I don't need what might otherwise be a useful article to try to sell me on it. Bring back the original content of the old Minds Eye column and leave the adds to Dragon Magazine.

Just my two cents.

I disagree with you on this one. While I prefer the old mind's Eye material, I like the synergy they are creating with existing products and psionics. For example, the next article is going to be a PrC related to Heroes of Horror, which is an idea I've been desiring since the old Mind's Eye articles on vile psionics and shadow minds.

I, for one, would love to see converted I1 Dwellers of the Forbidden City, N1 Against the Cult of the Reptile God, and the (U1 to U3) Saltmarsh trilogy. These are classic modules of the golden era which - while they belong in GH - can very easily be adapted to other settings.

Things on the D&D that could use improving eh?

MORE CRUNCH!

I used to visit 2-3 times a week. Now it's 2-3 times a month. Why? Every useful article like the Mind's Eye, Epic Insights, Fey Feature, Spellbook, ect at actually had useful game-mechanic related content has been removed

Instead we have completely useless things like: Use This Book Tonight, Characters with Class, the D&D Fight Club, Tactics and Tips, ect. Much better versions of all these articles can be found browsing fan sites.

If you want to bring more visitors stop offering marketing articles and start offering some more serious crunch.

Allow me to throw in my agreement with Amaril. Articles like The Mind's Eye that tie in a new book to existing material (especially non-core material) is great! I wouldn't mind seeing a couple more articles of that nature. Like one for the Races books and one for the Complete books. Of course, The Mind's Eye shouldn't be exclusively about new books, seeing as how it wasn't originally intended to be.
Amaril

11-17-05, 11:06 AM
I'd like to add that if they are going to continue the trend of synergizing books with psionics via the Mind's Eye articles, they also should visit previously published books such as Heroes of Battle, Libris Mortis, Draconomicon (*cough*gem*cough*dragons*cough*), and Lords of Madness, which should be relatively easy considering it has psionic creatures.
Khan the Destroyer

11-17-05, 03:09 PM
I agree with both sentiments here actually concerning the Mind's Eye article. The biggest draw I think of new books is the new material we all have to play with. And while Psionics is getting more treatment now in the new books than it ever has before, it is still such a small amount of material compared to the rest. If Psionics were to be kept fresh and new, we will need both the information to connect it to the new material, and also some game mechanics to incorporate.

For instance, what is the point of connecting Psionics to Heroes of Horror when there is no psionic horror-themed element to bring into the game? That's why I am glad that we are at least getting a prestige class in the article to come.

In response to the part about which old modules we'd like to see, I for one would really enjoy others in the old S series (White Plume Mountain etc) and the great long arc of adventures that started with the Village of Hommlet, and progressed through the Temple of Elemental Evil, the slavelords, the giants, drow and finally the demon queen of in the Demonweb. Not much to ask I know! However, as an old timer, these modules form some of my fondest memories of 'old school' D&D and I think they'd be tremendous fun in updated form and a treat for my current crop of players, most of whom have never played these old adventures.

I enjoy a lot of the articles and sneak peaks you have onsite. I would enjoy a bit more crunch.... perhaps a new monster-a-week (fan-submissions?), spells, short histories of the game worlds, shops, etc....

If I were to pick a set of modules to update, I'd have to say either the GDQ series or the Bloodstone Pass series. Both are staples from my 1st edition days.

Thanks for asking for input!

I have to put in my vote for the GDQ series as well. That was an epic set of adventures that I would love to see converted officially to 3.5e. Combine this with the "Vault of the Drow" article in Dragon Magazine #298 and the "Istivin: City of Shadows" series ("Touch of the Abyss," "Shadow of the Abyss," and "Wrath of the Abyss") in Dungeon Magazine #117-#119 and "The Harrowing" from Dungeon Magazine #84, and players can create their own Return to... module as a follow up to the GDQ series.

Nice job. Been here through a couple changes and it keeps getting better. A few more useable tidbits would be handy, but I come mainly for the conversation and the exchange of ideas.

How about a monthly article converting old campaign settings to 3.5? I know Dragon did something similar to this on a small scale, but they missed a LOT of the flavor of classes like the Sha'ir and Mumluk (how is a guy born into slavery, such as a mumluk, considered a PrC?). With the neogi figuring so prominently in Lords of Madness, a bit of info on spelljamming would be welcome. And of course, how could people not look forward to those times when such an article would present updated monsters and spells from these settings. It would probably be one of the more popular articles, considering how many threads I've seen discussing these old settings.

TO STAFF: Please make the online adventures easier to follow when playing the actual module. Even after reading them through millions of times, I still find myself scrambling through the hordes and hordes of sheets trying to find the description of the area the pc's have just walked into. I don't know how you could possibly do this, maybe some guys could help you out on that one.

I do not have a preference for a specific module, but I do have a recommendation on a feature I would like to see any updated module. I would like the updated module to include a short section on how it can be modified for existing campaign worlds (i.e. Eberron, Forgotten Realms, etc.) If that takes up too much space then a web enhancement for that would be nice. I have found similiar features in other sourcebooks and in the published Adventure Path from Paizo to be very helpful for my own campaigns.

I like some of the suggestions already made, but thought I'd make a few of my own. As for a module that I'd really like to see converted I would have to say that I'd really like to see The Rod of Seven Parts converted. Also, the Decent into the Depths series has always been a favorite of mine. Other stuff I'd like to see is more stuff converted for Greyhawk. I know it's supposed to be the default setting, and that there are many, many settings out there, but Greyhawk was the best. I think it still is the best, and there was so much material for it that some small amount of converting could be done. It makes me sad that Greyhawk has been cast aside for settings like Eberron (which is okay I guess, just not very much like the old D&D I'm used to - I will say that the Eberron books are some of the nicest that I've seen however). Anyway, that's my two cents worth.

You're definitely not alone with your sentiments. There are many others who have expressed the same concerns and wants on these very boards. Unfortunately, I am gathering that WotC doesn't plan to develop or allow anyone else to develop any new obvious Greyhawk material. So far Paizo Publishing has been including Greyhawk content, but they are effectively slipping it by. For some reason, they are allowed to write monthly Forgotten Realms and Eberron adventures, but any reference to IP related to Greyhawk cannot be uttered.

The hardest 1E module series to convert, in my eyes, is Against the Giants. Giants were significantly changed in threat level between 1E and 3E, and it'd be nice to see those modules converted for play in the 3E world. They were perhaps the most enjoyable set of classic modules I've ever played (Lost Island of Castanamir comes close, though).

I seems odd to me, from a strictly marketing point of view, to not publish Greyhawk material. For all the guys that have been playing since the very early '80s (like me) this stuff is what we remember most fondly about playing D&D and would buy the stuff up quickly. For all the younger players just getting into the game Greyhawk would be just another great campaign setting - like Eberron and Forgotten Realms. Doesn't seem to me that they could loose. Then again, I'm not a marketing guy. I guess we'll just have to keep nagging until someone stops us by publishing for the setting again.

The reason that Greyhawk isn't "supported" by Wizards is because they are allowing the RPGA to use it as a base for the Living Greyhawk campaign (LG). There is more than enough info on any given area of Greyhawk through the RPGA site and your area LG websites. It's almost as detailed as parts of FR.

That's always been a week excuse, and I don't think it's correct. Otherwise Legacy of the Green Regent, Living Force, and Mark of Heroes would prevent FR, Star Wars, and Eberron from being developed.

I agree it's a poor answer, but that's the one given. At least the RPGA has seriously commited to Greyhawk. Otherwise, I doubt WotC would be including things like GH's lesser gods in Complete Divine.

After reading the latest "Save my game" regarding identification of magic items, and several of the FAQ and "Rules of the Game" offerings, I would have to say it is time for someone to review and correct erroneous rules interpretaions. The latest SMG makes such erroneous rule references that is is practically useless. Please remove this immediately, or at least note that it is only compatable with 3.0 rules. (There are at present no less than 4 threads complaining about this article and its inconsistancies) The other features that I mentioned are in similar need of "cleaning up", as there are obvious errors, particularly in more recent offerings.

Greyhawk is kinda being supported.. Look at the gods in both the phb and other supplements there Oerthian...

Also it goes back to the odd addage of "Screw Gary"

Every product that bears or has information that is in Greyhawk a royality check is sent to Gary and well I believe they didn't want to do this anymore. Hence they went out and had the fans develop the new setting. Some of the other ones that didn't make it went on to be published by other companies.

You know I own many RPGs and D&D is the only one that doesn't have a default setting. They say that Greyhawk is the default setting, and they have given us a very short list of gods in the Player's Handbook and a short overview of the worlds cosmology in the Dungeon Master's Guide - and that's it! I wouldn't even look at another RPG if it gave me so little to work with as far as a setting was concerned. Only because I've been playing this one since '81 do I casually accept the fact that I have to buy a setting. There is no map or any description of the setting in any of the "Core" books. Other than the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer there hasn't been anything published related to the default setting. Some of you may have gathered by now that I'm not very happy about that! Hopfully we'll see something, anything, relating to Greyhawk.

Yes, I know that. That's why I metioned it a couple posts later. But WotC has said that they will only "support" 2 settings at a time. Greyhawk is being treated with an attitude of "if you don't play in one of these 2 settings, here are some rules you can probably use." I don't mind, because I make my own settings and let my players know that, unless otherwise stated, they should use the default setting information. That way I can work on the world (the cities, kingdoms, whatever) and not have to fiddle with developing gods or anything else the players need that I haven't gotten to yet.

instead of argueing about what settings WotC should support on thier website and in general, I think I will provide feedback on what the website is doing now...

I have to say that I am very happy with the return of map a week, it was my favorite feature for a long time and I am glad to see it back.

Save my Game and Rules of the Game, meh... they definatly need to be better edited, they often contain things that contradict the core rules as written (this is especialy bad in rules of the game where the purpose of the article is to explain the rules not change them.)

Save my Game seems to be written almost entirly from a 3.0 perspective, ignoreing changes to the rules that occured in 3.5 (the most recent SmG is a great example of this, Identify having an 8 hour casting time, analyze dwoemer causing fatigue, etc.) Comp who ever writes SmG some 3.5 books and make sure he reads them would be my advice to Save this Article.

Viscious Venues, is somewhat hit and miss, although I like the concept a great deal.

Steal This Hook, I think is a great idea, I have used it several times even though I do not play in eberron, keep it comming.

anyway, I enjoy the website now, as much as I have at any time in the past, it would be even better though if the editing on certain articles was improved.

I have to agree with everyone who says the want less fluff, however, I think that "Save my Game" and "Tactics and Tips" and the like are good. I (as many other people) go to the website significantly less than ii used to, and it's because there is so much irrelevent fluff. I used to be able to go to the frontpage and at least one of the most recent articles was something i would read, but now it is loaded with "D&D fiction" and a lot of campaign specific columns. I don't play D&D for the stories other people have written (and this includes the other campaign settings, really) so I don't want to read about them.

On a positive note, I absolutely loved the first couple Design and Development columns. I can't say I agree with everyone's picks (which is not Wizard's fault anyway) but I highly enjoy learning about how my favorite game is made. I think I actually had some outloud reactions to the "creatures with traction" article!

It would be nice if I could actually access your chatroom running an open source operating system. I used to be able to access your old chat room. I cannot access your new one.

*works now; thanks!*

I vote for revisions of the Desert of Desolation series (I3 Pharaoh, I4 Oasis of the White Palm, I5 Lost Tomb of Martek), I6 Ravenloft, X1 Isle of Dread and B4 The Lost City.

Can I also put in a request for d20 Modern revisions of some classic Star Frontiers and Gamma World adventures now that d20 Future and d20 Apocalypse are out.

Cheers,
James.

How about getting somebody who knows how the rules work to write the new Fight Club articles... creatures with out constitution score CAN NOT have regeneration, your new fight club creature not only leaves an undead creature with regeneration (which I could live with as an editorial oversight) but makes it a selling point for the creatures premise.

As I was reading that article, something kept nagging me that there was something wrong, very wrong, about it. Thanks for reminding me of that rule, now I know what it was. :lightbulb

As for the mistake made, maybe in should be W  tC on this one.

Take the personal opinion pieces off the front page and move them to the forums where they belong. For a more complete reason, feel free to visit the thread I started HERE (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=555356).

At this point in the game, I would like to hear, where WOTC is taking D&D. I get the feeling that WOTC doesn't know.

How about some details?

It would be nice if the "Herald-Level GM Test v. 3.5" would work in the Firefox webbrowser. They claim it works in Netscape, which uses the same Mozilla rendering engine, so it shouldn't be to hard. I might go and install Netscape just to check if that works.

It doesn't work with Netscape either, although the site says:
Web Browsers Information: RPGA pages including this test are optimized for use with the most current version of Internet Explorer or Netscape.

the new tactics and tips article is simply flat-out wrong with the following quote.

Incorporeal creatures exist on the Ethereal Plane and interact with the real world only through concerted effort.

Editing people... Incorporeal and ethereal are two different situations entirly (even for ghosts who are normally etheral but can manifest on the material plane as incorporeal).

Let's keep the posts to the subject matter of the thread and not other off-line sites. Thanks.

Personally, I would love to see any of the old Mystara modules brought back.

As noted before, Sabre River was a great adventure. But for me, some of the fondest memories I had was playing in Isle of Dread, and Skarda's Mirror (which by the way was AWESOME for going into a magical zone where slave revolts had to be inspired by the players....)

Modules are alright, but personally, I have to agree with the feeling that there isn't enough crunch or fluff to keep me on the website. I used to check it daily, and now maybe 1/week or more than once if I'm feeling bored.

In fact I really just read the previews, the Design and Development column (which content aside, I feel is simply well written) and anything else that looks likely to provide me with actual usuable rule information.

Then I check the boards to find all the places someone got the rules wrong.

I have to agree with the others before me... that ad console is rather annoying. Also, as someone who enjoys your fiction a lot, I would love to see more coverage there. For example the FR 'novel guide' seems bit outdated. Also, a forum for book related discussions would really be great. I get to game once every 2-4 weeks... but I read daily. So much more from your novels to talk about.

Just my 2cp!

Hi guys

Total neophyte poster here so please go easy on me.

...Andy Collins, Gwen Kestrel and James Wyatt took a crack at bringing one more 1st edition module up to 3.5 gameplay. Which one? I’ll give you a hint. Three actually: Whelm. Wave. Blackrazor. Oh -– and this time, the inverted ziggurat is far less easy to bypass!

Shheesh, how old are you guys?!! I remember these 3 (a sword, a trident & something else, wasn't it?) from way, way back - can't even remember what the module was called! :D

This is actually why I came to the boards. You see, I have 3 1st Ed. Rules modules - N1, N3 & U1 - and, living on the other side of the world, I''ve got no idea of what they might be worth in the big, wide world.

The reason I want to sell them is I've turned into something of a Sage in my old age (no poetry intended!), closeted with in my dusty cell with my P3 256MB RAM crystal ball, peering into the gathered wisdom of this world and others.

As such, I don't get out & about much - war wound, you know, magic missile in left nostril - and haven't done tabletop RPGs in many a year. :weep:

I've looked at Ebay and that gave me some idea but I thought maybe if I got it from the horse's mouth, as it were, from fans & aficiionados like myself, it would make far more sense, no?

However, as an old timer, these modules form some of my fondest memories of 'old school' D&D and I think they'd be tremendous fun in updated form and a treat for my current crop of players, most of whom have never played these old adventures.

...if a contest were run to find new spells (or feats, PrC's, monsters, etc.) for the game, and the best entries were offered up on the site, in an on-line spellbook perhaps, thousands would enter. Each contest would be similar, but not as extensive, as the Campaign Setting Search (all entries are property of WotC, etc.)... I know a lot of people would be proud to show off their latest D&D book if they had their name in the credits. Why not try something like that once in a while? Who knows? You could even find a few people worth offering paying jobs to!

Didn't they used to do something like this in Dragon magazine - the first part, anyway, esp. for new character classes (I remember The Houri ;) )

DEFINATELY The Rod of Seven Parts!!!

I love the web site, and I check in almost every day.
I'd like to see some DM tips to make my job easier.
Speaking of adventures, there was a time when I waited with baited breath for the new Original Adventure each month. The fact that classic modules are being updated is VERY COOL. But could we get more than 3 or 4 adventures a year? Please!
If I were to pick a set of modules to update, I'd have to say the GDQ series

The precieding quotes go double for me, especialy Mini adventures, and the most clasic of clasics Castle Greyhawk
would be a great update!

please... Please... PLEASE!!! Stop running the cartography from the books in the map-a-week. I find it insulting to be offered something I already own as a "bonus" product. I miss the old "populate to taste" maps. Please bring these back...

I'd like to see a "SEARCH" box or even an "Advanced Search" section to help locate information on items previously discussed in the D&D message board. An example can be found here: www.DSMTuners.com (http://www.dsmtuners.com) to keep chumps like me from posting rhetorical threads. Just my :twocents:
