Kazbadan 08-05-04, 08:51 AM	Wich movie(s) do you think that can catch better the essence of D&D? Until now i dont see many....only Conan and LoTR. BTW: i really would like to see a movie of "thief", the computer game. That one would catch in a different view, the essence of D&D, but it must be a "dark" movie.
Shatteredtower 08-05-04, 08:58 AM	The Last Unicorn worked pretty well for me that way back in 1st Edition. The mechanics wouldn't match, of course, but it captured some of the feeling for me. Maybe this is part of the reason why I'm still a bit leery of the belief that the system is "supposed to" (rather than "is made to be able to") cater to a high magic system.

It's got a grim fighter (paladin?) type, played grim by Rutger Hauer, IMO the best ever hollywood depiction of a D&D style thief (Matthew Broderick's "Mouse", the perfect reluctant hero), a fallen-from-grace good cleric, an evil Archbishop, a tragic curse, and an epic swordfight in a cathedral. And it's really a pretty good movie, all the way around. My wife's not a gamer, and she loves it.
dascribe 08-05-04, 05:56 PM	There have been many movies that catch the essence of D&D. LOTR being the greatest of them and Willow being my second pick. However, in my opinion, LOTR set the standard for what Fantasy movies should be striving for. Granted Jackson had an amazing story to work with, but what he put on the screen was outstanding. I feel like movie makers should be working for something more than B quality or less movies that might not even hit the big screen. D&D has been around 30 years and deserves more respect than what it got in creating the first D&D movie. When you are taking a game with a specific Demographic to the Big Screens and hoping for a big turn out you need more than the first game each of us played at 8 yrs old. You are stepping into the Popular culture demographic and they are slightly different. (Though the movies made for pop demographics are just as bad if not worse than some B movies I've seen). Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the cheese and corny plots and dialogue that represent who I was when I first got into fantasy, but I believe we can give Fantasy more respect than that. Peter Jackson did and look how successful his movies were. So when I hear stories about how bad the new D&D movie script is, I just sigh and wish that those writing fantasy for big screen would write something intelligent as well as super entertaining.

My picks Beowulf - its not the greatest, but its got some Brom-designed armor and weapons. Fantasy-nouveau Conan the Barbarian Yor, Hunter from the Future - who doesn't want to play this guy? He only speaks the language of Bada**! Ator, the Fighting Eagle - another one fluent in said language. Look out for his other 2 films Conquest - wonderful film exploring the dynamics of two men on a dangerous adventure in a fantastic realm of magic and murder Sorceress - they've got a freaking satyr companion! Ironmaster - primatives outcast discovers formation of iron, uses it to crush opposition and rule, until a strong hero comes along... Fire and Ice - animated, but still very nice one that has a strong d&d feel

D Actually there has been other attepmts to put the LOTR to screen that "flopped" like that cartoon version :rolleyes: Wasn't the Story was editing.

Jackson didn't just have an amazing story, the story was also famous and epic in proportion - hence, if you can pull it off, easily blockbuster material worthy of blockbuster investment (see also Troy). An amazing story nobody's ever heard of yet is not ever going to get a comparable budget, it will in fact be a struggle to get even a decent budget (and even that'll only happen if a big name in movie land would be willing to support the project).

And Willow is a great D&D movie (as someone already mentioned). Of course the question is...Is Mad Martigan a fighter or a Rogue...or multiclass?

Dungeon Master 08-07-04, 08:04 PM	Honestly, I don't think LoTR was very D&D-ish at all. Sure, they are both fantasy, but in terms of style and flavor they are completely different. I would say Conan, and certainly the D&D movie are closer to D&D. Of course, I am one of those old schoolers that believe 3ed did wonders for the mechanics of the game but completely hosed the "flavor" and spirit of D&D.
No Ones Fool 08-08-04, 09:01 PM	Did anyone mention the recent Mummy film? You know, with Brendon Frasier in it. That in my opinion captured the feel of a great campaign. It had an evil undead villian out to rule the world; a party consisting of an adventurer (fighter/rouge), a preacher (cleric), a librarian (rouge or wizard), and a turn-coat guide; plenty of traps and frequent fights; quirky NPC's; and ran at a frantic pace. Few swords involved as well. ;)
