My brother in law just finished his first play through of Suikoden IV and is GREATLY interrested in running a campaign that's based on the game (not the story, just the world).

He's a big fan of giving the PC group 96501634765 NPC's to add to their party at various moments throughout the game, and playing S4, he's pretty excited about running another game.

His main concern is cutting down on magic in the world, more of less doing away with spell casters and making runes available. Thus, everone (essentially) has the ability to cast magic so long as they can get ahold of a rune with which to do it.

He's looking for ideas concerning changes to the game, which classes to use, which to discard, and changes to the rules in general.

So, the point of this thread is to see what kinds of ideas anyone else here has to offer. He's just gotten the idea in the last couple of days and he hasn't actually started in on coming up with specifics or anything, so we don't really have anything to work with/share with you here at the moment.

But, any ideas at all are welcome.

Suikoden bores me to death so I haven't played IV, but I do have a suggestion for rune-based spellcasting. Make each rune a feat, and have each rune feat give a character the ability to use one spell of each spell level (1st-9th) once a day, with a limit that the maximum accessible spell level is half your character level. Cook up a bunch of runes with themed spells, like fire, healing, movement, influence, etc. similar to Cleric domains and you're good to go.

I haven't played it myself, but *shrugs* I'm willing to give anything a try at least once when D&D is envovled.

Thanks for the suggestion, though!

I'm not that familiar with Suikoden, but I am confident that it is not too dofferent from any other CRPG video game.

If your DM wants to make game with Suikoden mechanics, you won't be playing D&D. If he want the flavor of the world of Suikoden, then it all depends on his ability to immerse you in that atmosphere.

I've played a Resident-Evil style D&D game, and a Fallout-world-based D&D game and had fun in both. But I've also played a DragonBallZ game and got bored in the second session.

Video games tend to be defined by unbalanced power.
The "game play" doesn't translate well to D&D.

That was my original thought about it as well. I've never found one that's video-game based that was all that much fun. But, as I said, I'm willing to give anything a try at least once.

It looks quite a bit like things could be overly-brutal quite quickly both from the player perspective and from that of the common people. It's quite possible that a commoner can kill you quite easily as everyone in the world would be able to use the runes...basically, the whole world has the ability to cast spells so long as they can get ahold of a rune with which to do.

I don't know, it sounds interresting enough to give it a try, but there's quite a bit that would have to be changed and/or made from scratch, and that's why the post is here; to get as many ideas about as many things as possible.
