D&D: The Cartoon? [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-13-04, 12:31 PM I have read from several sources (Gamespy, Gaming Report and a few other places) that WotC is working with a known animation studio (Dark Horse?) with the intention of making a new D&D cartoon. This Cartoon is not connected to the previous one and in addition it's going to be much more mature than thee previous one.

I'm going on just memory here, but Dark Horse Comics has been active in the film-making scene for a while. They were integral to the production of Men in Black, BarbWire, The Mask and other flicks I'm sure someone else can help me out on. I'm sure they have a hand in the upcoming 'Sin City', based on Frank Miller's books of the same name. There's even a division called 'Dark Horse Pictures'.

If they're in charge, it's in good hands, IMHO.

Missing anything?

09-14-04, 10:47 AM well, wizards did put out a computer animated "interactive movie" that came out with some rpg magazines and you could get it from some other sources, but they did an animation at one point and time. but in the mean time, we can all just watch 8 Bit D&D.

Called "Scourge of Worlds", a choose-your-own adventure style DVD. Animated using computer graphics, it features three iconic characters: Regdar, Lidda and Mialee.

...that came out with some rpg magazines ...

Dragon magazine had a sample disc, with about a third of the whole story on it. The full disc is sold seperately, and contains over 2 hours of animation split between different paths that run on average 30-40 mins long.

...and you could get it from some other sources, ...

The full version is available at most stores that sell movies (sometimes listed under Scourge of Worlds, sometimes under Dungeons and Dragons). I have seen posts of people finding it in Walmart, Amazon, Target and such.

...but they did an animation at one point and time.

There is also a special edition that was supposed to come out a while ago, but was delayed. I think it is now schedualed to be out this fall (October?), and contains an additional two endings, character and monster renders, environment fly throughs and a linear story. Oh, and it comes with a Mialee mini.

I thought that was just cos all of those were based on Dark Horse comics, much like Marvel has a film division. They don't make films, they just liaise with those making films from their properties.

And before anyone says "But those weren't based on comics": yes, they were.

I'm sure this is the case. They own the properties, get little say and have a nifty DH logo tagged on the screen credits. But the fact that Dark Horse would be involved in the making of animated films doesn't surprise me in the least.

There are a LOT of movies that are based on comic book properties that people might be shocked to hear, but that's another topic/thread entirely.

I'd certainly love to see another D&D cartoon. One that might have to be showcased on Adult Swim would be great.
