For those unfamiliar, this film is the direct-to-video predecessor to the first Dungeons and Dragons film. I bought it at Wal-Mart tonight and I found it to be surprisingly good. It's both much more faithful to the game than its theatrical predecessor and a much better movie all around. I believe that, even if one weren't a fan of the game, one could enjoy this film. It's a sequel to the first, yes, but distantly-enough removed in plot that one needn't have seen the first film to understand this one.

Bonus features include an interview with Gary Gygax, a documentary about the process of converting game elements to film (including plenty of shots of the cast sitting around the set, very intently reading through rulebooks), and, best of all, an MST3k-style commentary track featuring Lidda, Krusk, and Jozan!

Also: no Wayanses!*
Also also: The actors are actually English, not Americans doing fake accents as expected.

It's definitely worth, at least, a rental. I give it 4.5 out of 5 on my Five-Factor Fun Meter.

*Granted, I thought Marlon's performance in the first was the best of the whole cast. But that's not saying much.

Did we watch the same movie? Seriously, the movie was garbage. Granted, it is better than the first. But that's really not saying much... Both make it onto my "Worst movies EVAR!!one1!!eleven!" list.

My ratings scale is based entirely on whether or not I had fun watching it, which I did. The plot was decently convoluted. The characters and their dynamics were interesting. There weren't any Wayanses or Jimmy Olsens. Yes, it was low-budget with unknown actors, but it was good low-budget with skilled actors and it was written by two self-professed red box babies. My only real complaint is that there weren't any deleted scenes included on the DVD.* I'm a sucker for deleteds.

This is how a D&D movie should be done. With some luck, it'll make enough to justify another, maybe with a higher budget.

*Unlike the first film, this one thankfully doesn't need the deleteds in order to make sense.

D&D the Movie was sheer, unmitigated crap. It tried to be an A film and failed miserably.

D&D: Wrath of the Dragon God was great. It tried to be a top-grade B-movie and succeeded admirably.

While the first film made me dread a second, the second film made me desire a third. I can only imagine what they could've done in the second film with the first film's budget.

There is a Dragonlance movie in the works...

P.S Kiefer Sutherland is the bomb. Except in 24. I hate that show so much...

Actually, the second was crap, too. I've seen fan movies that are better.

The first one is un-intentionally hilarious.

Not quite. The first was a bad good-movie, the second was a good bad-movie. There is a distinct difference.

The only thing that comes to mind when I think of the second movie is 'barbarians are hot!'

And also 'why is that black dragon breathing fire?'

Oh! And 'how did she teleport her arm into a wall?'

And 'hahaha! stupid druid!'

I have to admit it. Though I can see the merits of the second movie, I still consider it crap. But mostly because of the low budget. I actually enjoyed the actors though (minus that rogue and the human wizard), so they can stay.

But seriously, what's the story behind such a popular hobby getting such cruddy movies?

Spoiler alert:

And also 'why is that black dragon breathing fire?'

It wasn't a black-dragon, it was a dragon god.

Oh! And 'how did she teleport her arm into a wall?'

The magic well was cursed. It was a plot-point.

And 'hahaha! stupid druid!'

Technically he was a stupid priest. ;)

Don't forget how Berek had to slice off Ormaline's arm with his vorpal sword in order for her to be able to teleport them out. That was a fun moment.

Highlight for spoilers... (I forgot how to do spoiler tags.)

They let their cleric get eaten! And then blew him up! Right after the commercial that said never let your Cleric get killed.

Am I the only one who noticed the large number of Herpes commercials during the showing on SciFi.

Apparently fantasy nerds get herpes...

The second movie was significantly more entertaining than the first. The introductory sequences at the beginning were great, especially the thief's.

You should note that hollywood does not like repesentations of godly power, not even in fantasy films. They don't mind an Eeevil cleric casting spells to wreak havaoc on innocents or to take control of their minds but you will not see what is typical in a game of D&D. That is why the cleric had to die and those at the temple could only act like medics, not religious healers.

Check the Dragonlance animated feature being done - on IMDB it mentions that Goldmoon is A barbarian woman with a miraculous healing staff ! She has no power granted by the gods. See if any are mentioned that are not evil.

The guy who got the license to do the movies, Courtney Solomon is a D&D geek and based the first movie on his own campaign and used one of the themes he liked, Mages tend to be fascists and need good people, even thieves, to stand against them.

I'm not sure if there was a limit on the license he got other than he didn't seem to get any specific campaign world, thus the Dragonlance film. Solomon may get to keep making D&D movies forever.

Good lord, yes.

If you go into the first movie expecting anything even remotely serious or good, you'll cry. If you go into it expecting goofy idiocy, laughably bad acting, OotS-esque metagame comments ("You're just a low-level mage. Completely useless."), Marlon Wayans being Marlon Wayans, and Jeremy Irons devouring every single piece of scenery to be found, it's good times.

I had mixed thoughts on the second movie. It is definitely better than the first film but not a great film. I knew the first one was bad so I went into it just wanting to enjoy it for what it was and I did enjoy watching it. So it succeeded there. When compared to your common B-Movie it was really good. Obviously when compared to any mainstream film it failed horribly. So amidst all that madness I choose to watch it for what it is and I enjoy it most like that.

You really thought so? This was, to date, the only DVD commentary I couldn't sit all the way through; and I say this as somebody who watched BOTH of the commentaries on the first one. In-character "voices" always sound silly away from the game table, and you can only take so many comments like "Oh my, that is a mighty kraken!" before you start wondering why you're even bothering watching the commentary. I think I made it about 20 minutes in.

what the lvl were they supposed to be? they ran away from a spectre and a lich, but later the cleric turns multiple spectres without failure. than to make it even better, he has a vorpal sword but they get caught with a simple overhead cage trap, that a barbarian that killed more than 20 people without taking any harm cant just break....

if you read SlanderPanic's response, you'll see that the word vorpal is italicized, indicating that it's only supposed to be able to sever heads or something along those lines.

Actually, I follow the conventions of the books when I type the names of magical and psionic effects. Vorpal is italicized because it's a magical item property, just like flaming, disruption, or keen. Likewise, I'd italicize magic missile, cure moderate wounds, energy stun, or a +3 holy, axiomatic, flaming burst musket. I'm entirely in praise of using a vorpal sword in unconventional means for dramatic effect.

Both make it onto my "Worst movies EVAR!!one1!!eleven!" list.Oh man, both the D&D movies get a lot better when you're inebriated and MST them. As for Worst movies evar.....have you ever seen Druids (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0199481/)? It was so bad I had to keep watching.... I picked it up at first cuz I thought "huh, a movie about Vercingetorix, this should be interesting". I lived to regret it. My husband is still wrathful that I made him sit through it.

I feel I should preface this by saying that my taste in movies does not coincide with the consensus on many points. One might say I have "bad" taste in movies. For instance: I like the star wars prequels... all of them. I absolutely love the Super Mario Bros. movie.

That out of the way, I really enjoyed the first movie. Maybe it wasn't very D&D-y, but i liked it. On that note, however, so did all my friends. I didn't realize it was so universally reviled until I saw so on these boards.

I hate the second movie. Yeah, it's mechanically sound, and it's kind of like the game you would actually play at the table. But have you ever actually thought about watching people play D&D? It's boring!

So, yeah, there you go... enjoyed the first movie, and not even in that "so bad it's funny" sort of way, and think the second is a total snooze.

As for the movie I liked it. Watching it free on the sci-fi channel was well worth the price (but I bought it on DVD later).

A few parts did not mesh with D&D rules, but you shouldn't let that ruin you enjoyment.

Ugh! My brother rented that movie when he was really interested in them. It had the fruitiest portrayal of Caesar EVER! Can't quite put my finger on what makes him so fruity...but he is.

Oh, Vercingetorix. I'm still not sure if that 'movie' was supposed to be a parody, based on the Asterix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asterix) comics, or if it was to be taken seriously.

The props are clearly inspired by said comic, and it's a terrible shame that two perfectly good actors like Max von Sydow and Klaus Maria Brandauer gave themselves up for this crap.

Maybe they needed the money.

I haven't seen the movie but Vercingetorix really existed and fought with Caesar over the controll of Gallia.

So the movie was probably meant to be serious.

The first was beat-my-head-against-the-wall-to-get-the-stupid-out style bad. Truly, the worst movie I have ever seen (and I saw Ultra Violet).

The second... Eh, it was good for a chuckle. I will likely never watch it again, but I don't feel like it lowered my sperm count like the first one did.

Yeah, I'd have to throw my lot in by saying that the second movie wasn't so bad. I actually enjoyed it. Like someone else mentioned, it was a solid B-grade movie. Cheesy here and there, but not the agriegious mess that the first one was.
