I posted this has a customer service question, but I thought that I would put out here for the players to see if I'm the only one who feels this way. :D

Ok, so I finally got to see the new D&D movie, hey... it was pretty good! This is what a D&D movie should be... it uses the source material... magic items, classes, races, MONSTERS... kewl!

I went out and bought the DVD at Best Buy and was checking out the additional features. In the interview with Gygax, the "character sheets" of the characters are briefly shown... so I'm like, "kewl" I want that stuff!

I put the DVD in my computer expecting that it would be in the extras... but no, just a "starter module." Not bad... but I want the module of the movie... duh! So, here I am at YOUR web site. I would think that you guys would be promoting this thing like no tomorrow. The forum comments have been generally positive so there's nothing to be ashamed of here... yet the only thing that I can find it a brief tid bit about the movie showing up on the sci-fi channel.

What's the deal???? Where's the module to the movie????  Where's the write-ups of the characters???   Where the cross promotional merchandise????    If you don't have this stuff available somebody in marketing needs to be shot!

I can't believe that I am the only D&D fan that has asked for this stuff. This movie went straight to DVD, has had little promotion (other than the sci-fi channel... who IMHO did a better job than you guys did). The Movie deserved its own web page at least... if there is one it doesn't show up on any goggle or yahoo search.

Ok, if this sounds like a rant... I guess it is a little. As a 30 year player I expect better treatment...lol. Besides... how are ya gonna get D&D 3 off the ground if ya don't cross promote?????

End Rant. :D

WotC has nothing to do with the movie.

If you watch the DVD extras you will see that WOTC had several consultants working on set, and the actors were actually reading the rulebooks on set so to understand their character's place in the game.

There are interviews from WOTC personel, and GARY GYGAX (of all people) on the DVD. To say that WOTC has nothing to do with it is simply WRONG.

And what that has to do with the basic question I don't know.

Considering how big a flop the first movie turned out to be with fans, I can see why WotC would be hesitant to invest much into promotional material into the movie.

When the first D&D movie came out, there was an adventure put out that allowed you to play out the movie. It didn't sell very well at all. I've read in several places about it being released, but I've never seen any of the material myself - it never came to any store where I was.

Watching it on Sci-Fi, there were D&D ads during each commercial break, so they did do SOME promotion. However, I think once again they were fearful of how poorly the first movie was recieved and decided to not heavily invest in it should it flop.

Heck, I've been looking for this DVD locally and haven't seen it yet. And if you haven't checked out Scourge of Worlds, try and get a hold of it. It's even better than the two movies, in my opinion - and it too recieved only moderate promotion.

Interestingly enough, I wrote WoTC about this and got this reply:

I completely understand where you're coming from David,

We did advertise the movie in our popular Spell Compendium sourcebook, and there were also advertisements in affiliated magazines. But we do not have the proprietary information to provide the kind of game support you expect. The production company for the movie created the story and characters. I understand that you're a little frustrated in that this information was not released, and I can pass along your concerns to the appropriate departments in our company, but I'm not sure if we're able to do any more than what we've done.

We do pass along complaints, praise, and suggestions to departments impacted by the remarks, but that does not necessarily mean that those departments will be able respond to the customer directly. But I assure you that your opinions will be seen and read.

So apparently, McDonalds can promote "The Chronicles of Narnia" but WoTC doesn't have the go ahead from the production company to promote the movie based on their own property. Somebody needs to be fired.

IMHO the production company needs a low budget movie that they can post a loss on, and The D&D movie got picked.

Very frustrating, because there is a lot of cool stuff that could have come out of this. My game store manager didn't even hear about it, and he said himself he would have bought four or five copies just to have in the store to promote the game... seems kind of obvious to me.

Some people throw that "wrong" word around a little too easily. :waits:

WotC was with the movie in spirit, if not in actual production responsibility. But yes, saying you were wrong was not correct on the part of DM Dave. :P

To be fair, McDonald's makes more than 19 billion dollars in revenues each year, while Hasbro (who own Wizards) rakes in a measly 3 billion dollars. I don't think Wizards is a very big part of Hasbro, either, so their share of marketing dollars would be relatively small. That's why the Big Yellow Clown can cash in on Narnia and Wizards can't afford to do much with the D&D movie.

This isn't really rocket science here. The producers "hopefully" want to make money on the movie they are making right? If you make modules and products based on the movie you sell more DVDs. You don't have to take my word on this... just ask George Lucus whether or not he thinks this kind of cross marketing is a good idea.

You market your movie to your target audience (duh). If you make a movie based on the D&D game why in god's name would you NOT market it to D&D players? Wotc makes money on what they sell as do the movie producers, and hopefully sell more DVDs in the process.

As it stands right now very few people are even aware that a second D&D movie is out.

Stay tuned, however. The movie is actually pretty good, and with the internet and word of mouth we may see things change... but we need to write some letters man!

And Seeker... I apologise for using the "wrong" word too soon... we good? :D

It's called Wrath of the Dragon God.
I Think.
It might be Elemental Fury.
But yes, it's in Australia. I know none of the names of the people in the movie, except that Damodar from the first movie is in it. Fortunately none of the other actors or characters are.
