D&D/d20 Solo gamebooks? [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-26-06, 10:00 PM I didn't want to cross post but ;) ... I need feedback on ideas regarding D&D / Fantasy d20 solo gamebooks, whether or not the today's role-player feels that DM-less solitaire adventures have no place in group-game-party-based D&D?

03-27-06, 10:30 PM I think it's just marketplace evolution.
With all of the computer and console games, whether they be DnD or a different fantasy setting, the market for solo pnp support is pretty dead... If I want to play solo, I'll play NWN, Baldur's Gate, Elder Scrolls, or something of that sort, and I imagine most other people feel the same way.

In the hey-day of solo-gamebooks in the UK in the 80s, the computer games weren't that great - I mean The Hobbit and Colosal Caves (? not sure I have the title right) were as good as it got on the Spectrum and Commodore. I think I may be on a nostalgia trip here, please bare with me ... ;) ...
Those well illustrated books, with hefty generous descriptions are pretty much now in the shadow of modern graphics (oh god, I'm so upgrading my computer for ESIV: Oblivion ... me wantsss it ...).

Strangely enough, I used to find some of these books even more immersive than group play, but I guess that was because the groups I played with weren't always big on atmosphere or description.

At least with a solo-scenario in paper form you still have the friendly rattle of the dice and it's cheap and portable (no electricity required) - perhaps like a Magic: the Gathering Deck.

Maybe I should write solo-gamebooks for impoverished children with no access to computers or friends ... There just has to be a market in South America ... (okay, I'm kidding, my Spanish is rubbish)

Maybe I'm really just writing for myself ... ;) :D
