d20 Character Generator [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-15-06, 11:37 PM I'm looking for a character generator. I'm considering one for the group I DM to help make sure characters conform a little better to the 3.5 rules. Any experiences anyone has had with them would be appreciated. I've found a couple for purchase online (RPG Xplorer and Campaign Suite), but I'm interested in what others from the community think about them and perhaps any other software I haven't seen yet.

02-16-06, 12:15 AM Well, it's perfectly doable, but it's goint to take a lot of work.

A friend of mine uses an updated version of the WotC's ETools while he is DMing (don't even remember what it's really called), and he claims to love it. Meanwhile we are facing off against 7th level fighters whose greatest treasure is a heavy crossbow and some magic item not even the NPC fighter can use. Not to mention the random-auto-generated stats are all over the place with no consideration towards efficiency. Feats? I hardly ever notice the DM using feats, so I guess the random-auto-generation botches that job too...

But, the point is it's perfectly doable, if you take the time and effort to write it yourself. Of course you might want to check with WotC before you go ahead and do so. Lawyers, and stuff, you know...

02-16-06, 12:22 AM Maybe my previous post was a little unclear: I'm not talking about writing one myself, I'm talking about commercial d20 software. I vaguely remember an early version of the E-Tools that I didn't care for very much. I know there are other character generators out there (I mentioned a couple in my previous post). I'm hoping folks can give me there opinions of those or others they may have tried, and the pros and cons of the software that's out there.

Thanks for the info on the E-Tools though; thta's a good start.

They have 3.0 and 3.5 datasets for a boatload of stuff, inlcuding FR (and converted FR).

At least now it gives them +1 sword and full plate LOL

02-16-06, 08:56 AM Jamis Buck Generator (http://www.aarg.net/~minam/npc.cgi) for 3.0 and 3.5, also include a Treasure, Town and Dungeon Generator.

As to character generators you have a plethora to choose from...

eTools (It's all I use for character/monster generation)
NPC Designer (It's all I use for random npc generation, I've never seen better as far as random generation)
PCGen
RPGXplorer
Roleplaying Master (RPM)
DMGenie
Campaign Suite
RedBlade
Heroforge
DSForgeworks (if you use a PPC)

Then there's autofilled .pdf forms, many to choose from there, many of these can be found at www.rpgsheets.com. The most frequent I hear about is the Mad Irishman's sheets.

I'm sure I missed some as well.
