Hi All,

During this weekend's power outage from the ice storm across Iowa; we decided to play D&D the d20 edition, but my DM (Ed/flyingenic) hadn't played this edition either and was confused...he must be shy as he won't ask you all himself, but does anyone know how, as the DM he can tell how to have the players or himself roll for DEX etc for the new game (i.e. he has the newest Monster Manual, but it didn't tell him if he should roll high or low)?

For example my 1st level character, Caterina "Cat" Swiftwind, has a DEX of 20 +5 and had to roll against the trog to see if she dodged his club swings, grab attempts, etc...but since her DEX is so high, isn't it a DUH that it would be lower than 20 (or 25)?

You can either respond to me at onlineworkers@mchsi.com or to Ed (flyingenic) at flyingenic@hotmail.com or thedriver@mchsi.com if you know where he can find this information.

So far we have the following books for d20:

DM Guide
Monster Manual
Player's Handbook
and the new boxed starter set

So any chapters in these or if there's somewhere here online...I work so much (online) that I could take my breaks looking up any refs we get from any of you here :)

Trust me...now that I've tasted the game I will NEVER be full!! I'm just bummin' at all the time I've missed having not played since it began :)

Remember to a dragon you are crunchy and taste great without ketchup!

Huzzah!

The SRD (www.d20srd.org) has most of the basics in the game. However, reading that is confusing.

Basic mechanic: Roll the D20. You want high numbers.

And that's all I feel like explaining for now.

You don't make a dex check against an attack to see if you dodge it. You have never made a dex check to dodge an attack in any edition of DnD.
That's what the dex adjustment to AC is for. If thye miss you because of your dex modifier, then guess what? You dodged the attack.

d20 is a roll high system.
Your DEX check is going to be d20 +5 (your Dex modifier) vs. target number set by the DM or opposed roll (i.e. what the other guy rolled plus his modifiers).

You can dodge an attack roll like this:
You= d20+(Dex modifier)+(armor modifier)+(any other influences, like prone position) vs. Attacker =d20+(Base attack bonus, found in class or monster description)+STR or DEX modifier (for melee or ranged), this is worked into the attack bonus for monsters in the monster manual+any other influences ,like magical enchantments
*You don't need to roll all this much. You can actually "take ten" for the defender. Basically you don't roll and just take a '10' result for your d20 roll. In this way you can figure out the armor class ahead of time for most all attackers to try and beat.
Example: (using +1 for Dex and Armor)
Defender=10+1(dex)+1(armor)=12
So the attacker must roll 12 or higher to score a hit (adding in attacker's modifiers of course).

Skill checks are done largely the same way. The DM will set the target number (called the Difficulty Class, basically an armor class for skills and stuff). There are guidelines for the DM in setting this number up. Spells use a very specific math formula (10+ spell level + stat bonus relevant to that spell). But there is a large area for determining the DC of a skill check that is solely dependant on the DMs judgement. Determinng DCs and memorizing when there is a table or chart to do so just come with practice.

Hey Charlie Rock & Mitchell,

Thanks! That's freakin' awesome!  I bow twice as you both deserve my worship!

I'm saving the last one that you wrote Charlie Rock and Ed (Flying Enic/flyingenic) my DM is going to use that going into the next adventure.

I think I'm understanding it more than he is because I'm just starting out without any 'preconceived notions' about the previous editions.

Cheers! Rock on!!!
