I have a simple question about damage reduction: Lets say one of the PCs has a longsword with the magic property flaming on it. If he hits a creature with a damage reduction of 5/-, does he do (1D8 + 1D6) - 5 damage, or does he do (1D8 - 5) + (1D6 - 5) damage?

I was wondering about that, because I would think that the slashing damage is delivered somewhat separate from the fire damage.

He would do 1d8-5 +1d6. Flaming isn't reduced by damage reduction, and the flaming ability does damage even if the DR completely negates the weapon damage.

The character would do 1d8+1d6+strength mod+other applicable modifiers. This total amount would be reduced by the 5 points of damage reduction.

Even if you took the elemental and physical damage separately, the damage reduction would have no effect on the fire damage. For that, fire resistance would be needed.

Even if the damage reduction is not 5/fire?
5/fire would then be the same as 5/- as far as the magical property flaming is concerned?

There is no damage reduction for fire. There is fire (elemental) resistance, but that is a separate issue entirely.

Ah! Now I see what I was overlooking.

Thanks for the answer!

Also, note that the melee damage and fire damage are dealt simulaneously, so even if the fire damage was somehow prevented by dr, the dr would still only be applied once.

This is incorrect. Let's say the character has a total of +2 for Strength and other mods. If the character is unlucky enough to roll a 1 on both his d8 and his d6, he'll do a total of 1 point of (fire) damage, not zero.
