Damage Reduction Questions... [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-11-05, 01:33 AM okay... questions about damage reduction...

1. Does "DR 3/-" mean resistant to (or instantly regenerates) the first three damage from any source, including magic and/or magical weapons?

2. What about things like "DR 3/silver"... can it be hurt by +1 weapons? spells?

Any other tips concerning damage reduction?

09-11-05, 01:59 AM 1. It means you subtract 3 points from damage that is dealt to the creature by any source (magical, mundane, cold iron, what have you).

2. This means you subtract 3 points from damage dealt to the creature by everything that isn't made of silver. Silver weapons deal damage to the creature normally.

2. What about things like "DR 3/silver"... can it be hurt by +1 weapons? spells?Any time the DR is expressed by "/something," it means that that something bypasses it. So, DR3/silver reduces all physical damage by 3 unless it's a silver weapon.

09-11-05, 03:01 AM In addition to spells, any energy-based damage always penetrates DR. For instance, a flaming weapon deals 1d4+1 (weapon damage) plus 1d6 (fire damage). Assuming DR 3/-, the weapon damage would be reduced by 3, but the fire damage is not reduced at all. Damage from acid flasks penetrate DR, and I believe I remember reading that fall damage penetrates DR.

DR 3/- will protect you from any physical attack form such as manufactured weapons, natural attacks, and grapples. It does NOT protect you from energy attacks, any damage originating from a spell (even weapon-like spells), or from anything that isn't otherwise considered an attack (such as falling damage).
That depends on what edition you are playing. In D&D v3.0, +1 and better weapons would bypass DR/silver. However, in D&D v3.5, you MUST have a silver weapon to bypass DR/silver; even a +5 weapon won't bypass it completely.
