Simple question. Is there a difference between DR X/- and Hardness X?

I would assume no, but then why opperate with two terms.

Thanks.

Hardness applies to magic and elemental damage as well. DR does not.

Note that when we say "magic damage" we're talking about "damage from spells and powers" and not "damage from magic weapons." I've seen people get confused about that one before.

Further, an adamantine weapon will bypass hardness less than 20. It will not bypass DR/– or any other DR for that matter except DR/adamantine.

There is a slight difference, damage reduction can sometimes be bypassed by an indicated type of weapon. Hardness normally doesn't have a bypass (in fact its left up to the DM to consider whether particular weapons/tools can't do any damage at all (eg. trying to cut a rope with a hammer or mace)).

Since the DM's option is in there for wrong tools I suppose they could be encourage to reduce hardness when exactly the right tool is selected for the job. Sharp knife for rope, axe for tree, pick for rock.

Yes, Hardness cannot be bypassed by any kind of damage, when speaking of broad types. Physical damage, energy damage, doesn't matter, Hardness works against all of it. Each material would have something that can bypass it, usually, but its left up to the DM.

DR only applies against physical attacks, and always has a listed way of bypassing it (unless you can't bypass it, in which case nothing can get past it).

And there is no class granting hardness yet?

I would never use it, but I am puzzeled by it :)

Imagine "The colossus" PRC, increasing size and granting massive hardness. A difinitive game-breaker

Adamantine weapons bypass all hardness of 20 and lower. Sonic energy also bypasses hardness in a lot of cases. Some feats also allow bonuses to bypass hardness.

yeah i'm not sure where i read it probley somewhere in the dmg but i remember in 3.0 alot of sonic spells ignored hardness and acid spells too but in 3.5 i think it ignors half its hardness and all other damage including other energy damge is treated normally

i so would love to have harness of 25 rather then DR 25/- or even better fast heal or regen 25
because chances are your going to get hit with energy damage and spells so why not just take it and heal it back :) get hurt too bad just play keep away.... lol

Actually, acid and sonic damage work the same as physical damage with respect to objects, as opposed to fire and electricity which deal half damage to objects, and cold which deals one-quarter damage.
