Damaging a creature when swallowed whole [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-19-06, 01:05 PM Quick question:

If you are swallowed whole by a creature, such as a Remorhaz, and you deal damage to its gizzard, does that damage only affect the gizzard or do the attacks deal an equal amount of damage to the Remorhaz's total hitpoints?

05-19-06, 01:29 PM Unless a creature specifically lists separate hit points for specific body parts (like severing a hydra's head), then all damage is applied to the whole creature.

05-19-06, 06:43 PM What about sneak attack damage? There is no way the creature would have a dex to dodge an attack but any rogue is going to inflict HUGE damage if allow the extra. One DM allowed this and we would always make sure the rogue got swallowed. It was a sure fire way to kill big nasty swallowing stuff.

05-19-06, 06:53 PM I'm not sure what the RAW has to to say on this, but I could see it going either way. I might consider allowing sneak attack, but saying that, once you meet the gizzard hp as listed in each monsters entry, you HAVE to exit(possibly you get expelled in the same "muscular action" which closes the hole). That might be fair, The rogue could do hefty damage, but it'd likely be a fairly poor trade for the biting damage and the crushing/acid combo in the gut.

As I say though, that's not an official ruling, merely my 2 cents worth. I'd be happy to be corrected by any nearby legal Experts around (even if npc classes do suck.)

No sneak attack damage. Don't think about the physics or "reality". You threw both of those out the door when you didn't die in the process of being swallowed.

05-19-06, 08:41 PM I don't really like how Swallow Whole works. On one hand, you would think that the swallowee would perish much more quickly after being swallowed. On the other, you would think that the swallower would perish much more quickly after the swallowee cuts thier way out.

Don't parents teach their children to chew their food before swallowing nowadays?

05-19-06, 10:07 PM The only reason why a swallower could prefer to swallow that rogue with a pointy rapier intead of crushing his bones with its jaw? Because he cannot bite another tasty player while doing so!

Also, would a fighter with spiked armor deal damage every round to the swallower?
