I am going to make a new character for our campaign because my last one, a rogue, got killed and animated. However I'm at an impass, I want to make a fighter type character. Our party just gets whomped on with combat. But since were using the 28 point system it seems like many of the characters lose effectiveness.

Just for reference, out party is level 3 and consists of.

1 favored soul of st. cuthbert
1 cleric of pelor
1 twf ranger
1 bard
1 sorc
1 monk (who really is there to but not there at the same time if you know what I mean)

I was thinking of
A human hexblade
A dwarf fighter and plan to take dwarven defender
A monk of sorts
An elven ranger with archery

But that was my thought and I can't make a decision.

So maybe you can help me by giving me reasons or ideas in what to choose. You can even give me what class you would prefer thats not on the list. Prehaps even a PrC to shoot for and build towards that.

I'm not looking for optimizing which is why its not on that board.

Sources to use: PHB, DMG, CW (Complete warrior) MHB (Minitures Handbook) Standard Races.

Thank you all in advance.

If I were you I think I'd go for a rogue. The party currently cant find traps over DC20, so a rogue is a must if you dont want to find your party accidentally falling down a pit on the way home.
If you try and work on your sneak attack ability you will be able to contribute a lot to combat.

How so? I'll be glad to help out, but I'm mystified when it comes to this comment. 28 is plenty, especially for a warrior-type character.

But for a hexblade or a paladin? It seems either strained to me or like you have to sacrifice something in order to be decent in something else. But it may just be me :looloo:

With so many characters in the group I'd go for a Marshall.

As someone said that party does need a Rogue and you could go Elven Rogue/Fighter with the Bow Concept. If you don't want to play a Rogue then The Dwarf eventual Defender and the Elven Archer, either as Ranger or really better as a Fighter. With the a Ranger, Monk and Bard you really don't need another skillful warrior you need a DAMAGE dealer. And an Elven archer operating from behind the Frontline your group has should do nicely.

All 3 concepts work easily within the 28 pt system, only needing 2 good abilities Str and Con for the Dwarf, Str and Dex for the Elf.

That sounds like a pretty good configuration of stats for the hexblade. At level 4 I could put the stat point in cha. and bring it up to 16 which would increase the spell DC and curse DC.

I think I'm leaning towards Hexblade personally.

I am playing a hexblade lvl 10 and let me tell you how sweet it is trust me when i say this take the hexblade because you can do some real damage and have a fun time playing it especialy if there is a mage of sorts in the group also u are looking out for yourself not having to worry about ev1 who is yelling please help me. and if u do not help them the dm calls for an alignment check because as a paladin u are honor bound to help them.
