I was under the impression that Eberron was going to be the default setting from now on, but I see in the DMG II that they've detailed the city of Saltmarsh. Did WotC change their mind about Eberron?

Just wondering.

Eberron was never going to be to default setting, they are sticking with Greyhawk for the foreseeable future.

I am curious and would like to pose this completely non-pejorative question: Where did you ever get the idea that WotC was making Eberron the default campaign setting?

I don't remember who exactly said it, but I remember something being said during the contest that the winner was going to be the basis for all the games (TCG, RPG, CRPG, etc) that WotC produced. I guess I just took that as they were going to make it the default setting.

Frankly, I don't think there should be a default setting. 2E did fine without one. But if they insist, I think it should be a setting that they're going to at least support.

Yeah, because Eberron hasn't gotten any support from Wizards of the Coast.

Huh?

Eberron's getting plenty of support. Greyhawk isn't getting any support, which is poor treatment for a default setting.

i wait for five nations like a monkey stalking a living banana... there IS a lot of support to eberron, but you have to give'em some time, they can produce the bulk that FR has in a few monts!

Greyhawk is only the default setting so far as being the default Prime Material world. The core cosmology of the Great Wheel in 3e, nominally linked to Greyhawk within the auspicies of being 'core' wasn't Greyhawk specific till 3e, and it still isn't really, it linked nearly every single campaign setting in 1e and 2e within a common set of planes. Most detailed within the Planescape product line in 2e, it had just as many ties to Forgotten Realms as it did Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Dark Sun, Ravenloft, etc. It was the meta-setting that they all existed within.

However since 'greyhawk' is considered core in 3e, the Great Wheel as detailed in 3e largely only makes reference to the deities of Greyhawk and beings such as archfiends etc that were never linked to a single setting.

Technically the Great Wheel/Planescape has been getting more nominal support in 3e than Greyhawk as a world has. Can't say I really mind.

Eberron is the new campaign setting for D&D though that does not mean Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, etc. are dead.

For the time being, Greyhawk is the default setting for D&D Third Edition line.

Besides, there is nothing basic about Eberron. One could say the same for the 18-year-old campaign setting Forgotten Realms (magic tends to be a tad too powerful there which is good for spellcasters).

Perhaps they got the idea of this since several of the new D&D games that are coming out will be based in Eberron. I believe the new MMORPG will be based on Eberron, as I believe (unless there was a change in plans) the RTS coming out will be as well (though I might be wrong).

With that many might mistake it as being the default setting (much as some saw the FR as being default for 2e after they played the BG and IWD game series).

Well, it is a new D&D setting. I remembered when Forgotten Realms came out commercially in the late 80's. They all set to promote it via novels, and then computer games (when 5.25-in "truly" floppy disks from SSI are the rage).

That's what they're doing with Eberron now, pitching and marketing their product brand anyway they can.

Greyhawk is largely dead, except that invoking the name can still sell a book here and there. Eberron is, for all intents and purposes, the flagship campaign. Nothing wrong with that. Its written specifically for 3.x, and the spirit of the setting fits the spirit of the 3.x rules.

I think Eata was employing sarcasm.

The "Default" setting of D&D is still greyhawk, since the magic items, deities and other small details portrayed in the core books are drawn from that setting, but it might be better to call it the "Example" setting.

Some call Greyhawk generic, and some Greyhawk fans reject that label. But generally it's the rod by which most of the material released is measured.

Eberron is currently a major focus for WotC since it's new, so there's a lot of basic material to release and they're attempting to generate interest in it, as you may see from the Eberron Articles they release every monday.

So while Eberron isn't the default setting, it has become a major part of D&D already despite it's relative youth.
