Defensive Bonus Feat... comments? [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-19-06, 10:43 AM OK, here is a feat I am thinking about adding to my game, what does everyone think? I am adding this, because at higher levels it seems pointless to gain additional pluses to attack rolls.

Defensive Bonus Feat
Prerequisite: +6 Base Attack Roll

Normal: Your AC is equal to 10 + dex bonus+ armor+ other feat options.

Special:There are two versions of the feat, Defensive and Offensive, and the type you take must be chosen when the feat is selected. This feat may only be taken once. Its effects stack with any other AC altering feat or magic enhancements the character may have. The Defense Bonus is treated like the dexterity bonus for AC, and applies (or does not apply) to situations governing that situation. Armor penalties do not apply to the Defensive Bonus.

When sacrificing your base attack bonus for an AC bonus, you use the primary attack score (if you have multiple attacks). You may not sacrifice an attack bonus if your primary attack bonus would become equal to or less than your secondary or Tertiary attacks.

Defensive: You may add +1 to your AC rather than adding a +1 to your Base attack roll to a maximum of +14 each time you become eligible to gain an attack bonus after you take this feat.

Offensive: You automatically gain a +1 bonus to your AC each time you gain +1 to your base attack bonus to a maximum of +7.

03-19-06, 11:40 AM In my games, I would never give up attack for defense. If you want to, that's what Combat Expertise (and Improved at Epic Levels) and Fighting Defensively is for. Otherwise, if you want to increase the defensive capabilities, just use the Class Defense bonus rule from Unearthed Arcana.

As for the suggested Feat, it is a bit cumbersome IMO. If you want to allow something like this, just houserule it that a when a character levels and gains BAB, they may choose to permanently apply this bonus instead to AC as a Dodge bonus. No need for a feat since realistically this makes since (in training/ leveling you concentrated more on defense instead of offense).

Otherwise, I would limit the Offensive use to +5 and make the Defensive use unlimited.
