Delusional players. [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-12-07, 11:27 AM I have one player, which we'll call Jester which is one of his favorite characters.

Jester is, quite frankly, insane. He doesn't know the rules very well. (Not a big deal, as all the other players can help with that).

But he tries to bring up some pointless stuff. Such as...

1: He lost his old character sheet, and had to rewrite his character. Since he /remembered/ that he had 4 ranks in intimidate on his old sheet, he by DEFAULT had it on his new one. Simple idea right? Well he DIDNT spend the points on intimidate and spent it on different skills. but of course since it was on his old sheet, by DEFAULT as he proclaimed, it was on his new one, even though he didnt want to spend the points to have it.

2: His still utter belief that WHite wolf's VTM being a RP game, means its auotmatically in the DnD world too, and thus his 3rd generation vampire should be able to play. (We've tried numorus times to teach him they are in fact, two different settings, game pubishlers and even systems of rolls, but he just doesn't get it.

3: Belives his chararters are real as in real life, and that Wizards of the coast had made them legit and will be in the books as soon as they have space to do all the characters he made.

4: (One of my faves) That when he moved to Missorui, they had their own Wizards of the coast, named Wizards of the east coast. They had rules on how to roll the dice cause they were more hardcore. Even though they have no website, and indeed no mention anywhere in the universe of this. He tries to claim its because they are secertive and don't want to be sued, even they are part of the Wizards, and were turning out exactly the same book, but with a wizards of the east coast logo.

5: (My all time favorite): That he has been crowned, for five years running, that he is indeed the worlds greatest DM, by not only Wizards of the coast, but by Gary himself. You can all see how that isn't possible, seeing as the game itself is so subjective to the person's playing style, but the guy doesn't even know the rules to ANYTHING. He still belives that fighters can cast any spell if they have a single rank in spellcraft.

He has many many maaaaaany more issules, such as the fact that all his characters are gay vampire lycans of 60th level. (NPCS) when he DMs, and they join and always outshine us, but are /downplayed/ so we feel like heroes. He doesn't DM often such he quite frankly, sucks, but is getting better.

Jester can be a good person though, and a great friend and we try to look past his faults as player since we all have our problems. I just wanted to rant, and thank you for listening and will take any advice about anyhting.

Plus I wanna hear about any other delusional player stories.

As for my experiences, no truely insane players. The worst problems I've had are with people cheating, or bringing out-of-game confilicts into the game, or vice-verse.

04-12-07, 01:04 PM He sounds like he is being obstinate about the rules of the game, frankly. This is why sometimes you have to walk that balance between being the DUNGEON MASTER and being a normal person--those players who need ground rules laid out like elementary school children. It's not so much being delusional as it is simply not believing there ARE rules.

04-12-07, 01:11 PM Ah, the pathological liar. The fundamental escapism inherent to any RPG, like D&D, can't be good for this guy's psyche. Though I am curious, how old is this guy? If he's 12, I'd just chalk it up to the exuberance of youth.

Anyway, the most common advice you'll likely hear on this topic is "a person doesn't have to play D&D with you to be your best friend". Sounds like this guy is more trouble than its worth to put up with as a player (or worse as a DM).

He was one of seven, at least four of the others were after him, and he was simply hiding out/lying low on Earth for few centuries. He was immortal, he could "side-step" into his own personal shadow dimension, and had special longsword made of pure silver (named Silver Spade, of course), and that it weighed nothing in his hands, but if anyone else tried to pick it up they couln't. Etc, etc,etc, blah, blah, blah.
Happy to say, I haven't seen him in about 12 years now, but I did game with him for a couple.

Also had a path liar I gamed with as well. These guys are fun. Ours was also body builder. He looked at me one time, and dared me to prove that the sky wasn't green.

Good times.

I recommend therapy administered by way of a two-by-four. It probably won't help him, but it will make you feel much better. :devil:

There's no reason to think that a delusional person with no history of violence will suddenly become violent.

If Jester hasn't been violent thus far, there's probably no reason to be worried around him. Though I would worry for him. Like, how does he get home from the game? Does he take the bus? In his mind, is it a gigantic cat with headlights for eyes?

What if it scares him some night, and he can't get on it, and just sits on the corner until they find him three days later, starving and dirty?

That's what I'd be worried about.

04-12-07, 04:38 PM I used to play with a girl who was convinced that she was a Unicorn, that could turn back and forth between form. Only, she forgot who to turn back and was locked into human until somebody could teach her how to turn back again.

Other than that she was normal for a gamer, and pretty hot besides, so nobody ever mentioned getting rid of her from the group.

Worst I've had is a story from a friend about the head of a game club which was being introduced to D&D. The head approached my friend and said, "So, what do you think is a good prize for the winner?"
...
I still think that guy thinks that there's always one person who is supposed to 'win' D&D each day.

04-13-07, 02:01 AM oo i gotta story ^_^ its about this one kid... well he was 27... so like an adult with the mental capacity of a child... either way. His character was sooo good, I mean His stats for his level 1 offa rollin 4d6 discard lowest, rool 6 times. Was friggin perfect 18's straight across the board, i mean YEAH, tahts great, he did it at home, with no witnesses, not even his dog seen him. But either way, yeah, w/e we can slide that, just make crap 10x harder for him. About halfway through the game session it started to occur to us that he might not be a level 1.... because the DM had sent us into a battle to force us to retreat, he attacked and well instant killed it... i mean 3 20's ina row, i mean I swear he rolled a 5, 16, and a 2, but he SWEARS on his left nut and god and soul and cheezy tracer and dog and w/e else he can swear on that it was 3 20's. sad thing was he rolled it right in front of the dm, grabbed the die b4 it stopped rollin said "nat 20"... i mean is that a new concept of playing ive never heard of? i dunno, guess im an old fashioned gamer whose 20 sided actually lands on other numbers, but either way, he got banned for theft from the store we played at, they said he could keep playin there if he returned the item and said sorry, he denied it, got prosecuted, and jailed for 30 days in county with bubba. We never seen him again... except once, he walked right back into the store after he got out... the gamers, who u never knew could be so active proceeded to lift him up and carry him outta the store like a drunk who didnt pay his tab and chunk him on the sidewalk. 'Those moments make me proud to have a sleight of hand skill of 19 ^_^, clerics of pelor should not steal...' (btw those were in game references to our characters... jus to clear things up)

I mean there's the whole infinate universe theory, but come on.....

We have a player who always seems to pass the dc for all his rolls (we all know he just says he passes) and his states are always max etc, so I went out and bought one of the Jumbo sized D20's (about 8 times bigger than standard d20), and then DM said that we all have to use it.... you should have seen that players face. For some reason he actually started to fail saves.... I wonder why lol :D

I'm guessing that you made all of the spelling and grammatical errors deliberatly. Now THAT is scary!

04-13-07, 12:25 PM I used to play with a girl who was convinced that she was a Unicorn, that could turn back and forth between form. Only, she forgot who to turn back and was locked into human until somebody could teach her how to turn back again.

Other than that she was normal for a gamer, and pretty hot besides, so nobody ever mentioned getting rid of her from the group.

so a hot girl who thought she was a unicorn. Was she horn....oh never mind... :D
