Ok, I'm very proud of my new campaign, it's the first one we're doing with a continuing storyline, and as a result we're getting great roleplaying and less focus on number-crunching characters.

But there's a problem...

I need recommendations for good background music. Now I admit, LTJ Bukem does make decent battle music, but I need something to set the mood of roleplay.

Something medieval or renaissance is what I have in mind. You know the kind of music I'm talking about. Also, another cool type of music would be the Latin (or any language... I just usually associate them with Latin) ominous choirs... sounding like "O Fortuna". That would kick ass for catacombs, and would fit well in the Undead theme of my campaign. I'm open to other suggestions for music as well.

What do you suggest? What do you play at your D&D sessions?

I liked to use a few tracks from each of the following

Conan the Barbarian
Record of Lodoss War*
Arslan*
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Fellowship of the Ring
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Berserk*
Nazca*
Chrono Cross*
Final Fantasy 7-10*
Suikoden III*
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
El Hazard*
The Two Towers
13th Warrior
Jaws
Sharpe's#
Tenshu*
Excalibur
Horatio Hornblower#
Braveheart
Clannad Albums
Robin Hood TV#

That's some of the music I use in my games. Although all the (*) are from Anime or Playstation games. (#) Sharpe's is a British TV series, Hornblower was produced by A&E, Robin Hood was another British TV series with music by Clannad.

Whoa that's a humongous list... I wouldn't know where to start man.

Which ones wouldn't you be able to part with for background music?

None really, sorry. :( But I sure they are available has mp3s a friend downloaded a bunch, even the Anime and British stuff. I'm not sure where though. I'll ask then try to post it to this thread. If not I'd try music stores I'm not sure where you are but if you have a Warehouse near you they actually have a good selection of used stuff, depening on the size of the store of course.

For the chant recordings, look in the classical section of your record store under "Gregorian Chant". If nothing else, they might have the disc CHANT, by The Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos (Angel CDC 7243 5 55138 2 3). This disc was a HUGE hit some years back, and is still popular.

For an Irish feel, check out the early recordings of The Chieftains. (Their recent stuff is more cross-cultural, involving rock and country vocalists) Look for their numbered discs (CHIEFTAINS 2, CHIEFTAINS 3, etc) on Shanachie Records.

Another nice background disc for heroic music is the original soundtrack for Kenneth Branagh's film of HENRY V. (EMI CDC 7 49919 2) It is so nice....(Check out the movie, too!)

Rian got a nice list :)

A few other suggestions would be:
In extremo (bardic songs, medieval style)
Gregorian Chorals (christianian church chorus)
Vivaldi´s The four seasons (Spring is nice)
Gandalf (Visions 2001 and Lord of the Rings - its not the movie)
