| meena62407-10-06, 04:36 PM | Details Magazine is writing a story about adults who still play (or started playing again) Dungeons and Dragons. We're looking for men who are out of college, but younger than 40, who work in unexpected careers: film, record industry, lawyers, real estate brokers, bankers. This story is meant to break the stereotype of the 'geek' who plays Dungeons and Dragons by highlighting men with cool jobs who love the game. Please respond to this message by emailing amanda_garrett@condenast.com if you fit this description! |

What kind of careers are post-college D&D 'geeks' supposed to have? And what about D&D 'geek' women? Haven't you just stereotyped D&D players yourself by assuming all would be male? And most importantly of all, what are you paying? :D |

Your reply is the epitome of geekdom. Next. Devin |
| Prak, the Mad07-10-06, 10:03 PM | they're looking for jocks and yuppies that happen to play D&D, basically... and there's an inherent flaw in the "non-geek D&D player" thing.... D&D often defines a geek.... |

| Nom07-11-06, 01:07 AM | 'cool jobs'. Hmm. Leaving that one well alone, my current group consists of two teachers (both over 40, though), a programmer, a industrial fencer (as in barriers, not the sport), and another professional (don't know exact job). There's also a female teacher, and occasionally a full-time mother. |
| Grandpa Gamer07-13-06, 12:43 AM | I guess that leaves me out - I'm 42 years old, and a "technology professional". Does that mean I'm officially a geek? I've never won anything in my LIFE before!!! :D You like me! You really like me!! |
| ChaoticGood07-13-06, 01:05 AM | I think your scope is a bit limited. A guy I know plays D&D and he is a firefighter. That's neither a jock or a yuppie. Devin Hmm, his job consists of: - Being in excellent physical shape. - Moving heavy objects. - Surviving physical challenges in harsh environmental conditions. - Driving around at high speeds in a big ol' truck with flashing lights so other people will know to get out of the way because you're WAAAY more important than they are. ;) Nope, jocks wouldn't be a good fit for that job at all... And where, exactly, do you get off telling RecycledDM that he is "disqualified" and the "epitome of geekdom"? You aren't the original poster, so what authority do you have? He raised a very valid point. The specific nature of this request reinforces the "male" stereotype of D&D; if they are truly trying to "break the stereotype," they would be seeking ANYONE who doesn't fit the assumed mold. And there's no use telling me that I'm "disqualified," too. I fit the age and education requirements, and I once had a "cool" job (Top 40 radio DJ), but that didn't work out so well and now I am on the path towards the extremely geek-tastic field of IT Management, so nyeh! :P |
| Alac Luin07-13-06, 01:25 AM | Well, Details is a mens fashion magazine. You know, about things in a guy's life. So it would stand to reason it would focus on guys that play. Now, if that publisher did a similar article for women, in would be in Jane magazine. BTW: Grandpa Gamer, yes, you are a geek!!! :) |
