Determining Size by Height [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-30-07, 04:04 PM I am working on a homebrew race, and I want average height to be approximately 3 feet tall. Is there a format for determining size by height? Any input is appreciated.

03-30-07, 04:27 PM Not really. Just decide whether you want the new race to be treated as small or medium.

Yes, there are short humans and tall humans. But humans are size Medium creatures. Yes, there are tall gnomes (and I assume some abnormally small gnomes), but they are all treated as size Small. The size is a category of rules applications for the entire race, not for an individual of that race.

03-30-07, 05:48 PM Compare your race to other creatures - as a general rule, each size catagory is twice as large as the last. A 3' tall creature which is bipedal and not extraordinarrilly fat is probably Small sized.

03-30-07, 06:47 PM There's a table in the glossary of the Monster Manual (on the same page that size is explained on) that shows average ranges for each size category. Three feet is in the Small range.

These are only estamites, not completely hard and fast, but the race you are making looks like it is small.

**-Assumes that the creature is roughly as dense as a regular animal. A creature made of stone will weigh considerably more. A gaseous creature will weigh much less.

03-30-07, 08:43 PM My above post was based on what I now presume to be an error in interpretation. I thought you were asking if a specific individual's height could determine its size category!

04-24-07, 11:17 PM I say do the math. If a normal human, say middleaged, is 5'9" and weighs 130 than if you want it too be a small human than the math says that it would be oh well you can do it. GTG

04-25-07, 12:46 AM 3 feet tall is a bit shorter than the average gnome, but it's exactly the same as the average height for halflings (2'11" being average female, 3'1" is average male).
