I was on another thread when I started writing about dice. <see below> I really think that some DnD players go a little funny for dice. I wondered if any one other than myself had interesting Dice related stories.

I always line my dice up with there highest value showing.

I have many sets of dice. I have a player who has “fire ball dice” die that are only used to deal fire damage to things.

Another friend of mine has a set of dice for each character she has.

I myself dream of one day ordering “Pound of Dice” from this web site I know of that sells dice. My boy friend has dice made out of bone. he likes them.

Pound of Dice….hmmmmmmm…..

I line up my own dice with the highest number up, so don't feel out of place on that one!!

The standgest thing I have ever done with my dice is made a D20 holder... I got bored at work, and my selection of D20s was getting pretty high (I used to also line them up so I used one after the other and didn't use one twice before using all the others once) so I goot come box corners and made a tube with a cap and a cup at the end along with an arm to hold it upright for all my d20s. I even used it for a while and still have it in my car. Came up with how to make it out of PVC pipe, make a screw on cap for one end and putting a hinge on the cup so that it closed up, thus making a nice holder for your d20s and something to roll them out with. It was really quite nice, roll a die, put it into the top of the tube and keep going. I had fun with it!

And yes, I do have different sets of dice..

Blood Dice-slightly red ting to them, hard to read.

Shadow dice-smokey dice, used for playing bad guys.

Power dice-purple (fav color) that I really only use when I'm planning on destroying a building single handed. Take these out when I'm DMing only if the players are getting on my nerves. I've had players start trembling at the sight of these dice.

Death Dice-three d6s that I keep in reserve. One is a dragon die (looks like a boxed up dragon) and two are devil dice from spencers (the pips are all devil faces) and they never fail to roll what I need them to roll.

And then there are the Dwarf Dice... that NO ONE CAN FRIGGIN READ!!... bought them when I played my first dwarf because they were all stoney looking... yeah... used them once and put them away.

In other words... yes... I have the Dice Madness as well. :dragon:

Yes, but do you also put caution signs up claiming "Danger! Dice in training!"

I have several different colors of purple dice that are mine. All other colors of dice I have get put into the loaner dice box.

Of course I set my dice up with the highest number on top.

1. Gravity will naturally weight the die to come up with the highest roll for me.

2. The dice will remember their previous state and wish to return there.

3. OK, so neither of those really work, but it's nice to have some rationalization for my madness.

Pound-o-Dice? Oh yeah. I ordered a few of those - I have a box full of them.

But for DMing, I tend to pull out the big D20 so that everyone can see their doom from accross the table! :evillaugh

The people in my group play this annoying game with their dice. My grandfather taught it to me with regular 6-sided dice, and he always called it "Goodbye Joe!"

I'll give the rules for 6-sideds, you can modify it as you wish.

1) Roll 5 dice.
2) If there are any duplicates, set them aside and reroll the rest.
3a) If you get any newly rolled dice to match the ones that were set aside, add them. Otherwise, you say "Goodbye Joe!" and you've lost.
3b) If you have no matches in this second roll, but, two or more of these dice match themseles, set these aside and reroll the unmatched remains with the ones you'd set aside before.
Repeat until you get all 5 the same. That's a "Hello Joe!"

It was a gambling game for a while. But I'll leave those rules off the board.

The kids in my son's group will play "Goodbye Joe" all night and keep track of who gets the most "Joes" in a night. All the noise of the dice hitting the table drive the poor DM nuts.

I buy a new set of dice for each character...

I've read about the Dice Holder, and made one myself with some -HIGH QUALITY, PRECISE- saws and some MDF :D. I've also bought the Pound of Dice several times, and never been disappointed.

My only dice thing, if I remember to do it, is to roll a different d20 after roling a "nat20" on a d20. It seems that I always roll a 1 if a roll a 20.

I remember when some crucial roll was coming (like making a saving throw) that I would keep rolling the dice until the DM says, "Ok, make your save". Now I just roll when he says he's ready.

However, I have one particular dice that always seems to roll higher. The d20 that I always choose as my favorite to roll for some reason never served me best. So now I find myself using the other one more often.

Other than that, I don't get dice goofy - at least not like I used to.

Two stories comes to mind

1:
Once played with a guy who didnt let anyone touch his dices if they did he would throw away that dice. He also once stabbed a guy in the hand with a fork for touching his dices

2:
A guy keept doing low rolls with his D20's ending in him taking all his dices. Lining them up around a glass picking one of his dices put it into the glass filled it with a flamable liquid, BBQ it and say "There you see what happends if you keep on screwing me over"
He did a 20 on the next roll :D

Someone call for me?

Highest number up? Uh.... See, if you do that, then what are the odds of you rolling that number again? Do you always roll multiple 20's one after the other?

So, if the natch is already up, odds/fate/dicegods are thinking about not letting you have it show again.

That's why my wierd thing is to set all the number to 1. There, it's showing a 1, so it shouldn't roll up a 1 again.

:D

I also don't like people touching my dice. The karma is for me, and I'd have to kill fellow players from taking my 19's and 20's.

I just ordered a about $20 worth of dice from Chessex to complete a specific set. See, as I've often advocated (and was delighted to read in PHB II) I roll my attacks and damage all at once, with individual attacks color-coded. Thing is, I'm playing a very dice-heavy character. He's a monk/fighter/acolyte of the fist, with Improved Natural Attack, Fiery Fists, a campaign-specific artifact that gives his unarmed strikes shock and vicious, as well as a bunch of other special abilities that add to damage on at least one attack. At the moment, he can get as many as six attacks in one round.

So, I need six d20s, 18d8, six translucent d6 (for shock), six opaque d6 (for Fiery Fists), twelve speckled d6 (for vicious), and six opaque d6 with pips (for the Fist of Energy ability from Acolyte), all in appropriate colors for each attack.

The dice I ordered will complete this set.

I'm not sure what it is. Dice are pretty. Something about a handful of small, colorful objects invokes what I call the collector's impulse. Having a handful is neat, so having a thousand handfuls must be deific.
But dice are the epitomy of probability, so you get all the usual superstitions people develop about probabilistic phenomenon on top of that. People will have lucky dice, unlucky dice, dice that they think only roll odd numbers, dice that they think only roll even numbers, dice that only roll 20s when it's really funny, and so on. It's all equally random, but it doesn't feel that way.
Then there's also specialty dice; d7s, d24s, d30s, d100s, clear hollow d10s with smaller d10s in them that you can use as d100s, Crystal Caste's crystaline-shaped dice, dice made out of metal, dice made out of precious stones, dice made out of meteorite, spherical dice, unusually large dice, unusually small dice, dice that are actually sculptures of naked people in weird positions...
These, too, invoke the collector's impulse.

Once played with a guy who didnt let anyone touch his dices if they did he would throw away that dice. He also once stabbed a guy in the hand with a fork for touching his dicesIdunno what the hell that's about. But I suspect that dude had problems before he had dice.

For future reference, "dice" is plural. The singular of "dice" is "die." A twelve-sided die. A thousand twelve-sided dice. "Dices" is one of the things a Cuisinart does.

Well, that last part (not letting others touch your dice) is obvious. I personally keep 3-4 full die sets (1 each of d4, d6, d8, d12, d%, 2x d20) with me at all times.

I recall a store selling a "Bag o' Dice" for about $5 AU (around $3-4 US, or £2. That is to say, not much).

I line mine up showing the highest value as well. Sometimes, if a die rolls badly consistently, I drop it into a glass of boiling water, surrounded by the other dice so they can watch and learn. Someone else taught me that one. I wouldn't say it works, just that there have been some amazing coincidences.

I have a specific psionic D20 and a villainous D20. The rest are for any use.

Hmm, I have 100+ D6, I'm working on attaining 305. Bonus points for anyone who can correctly guess why.

Whenever I have to roll ability scores for a character I roll the dice on a suitable picture, to help give them the idea of what they need to achieve.

I know one person who owned a set of "Magic Missile dice" (5D4, apparently they rolled high whenever he did magic missile damage, but rolled low whenever he rolled Wizard HP), a "Greataxe die" and his "Cleric hit die". They all had specific goals.

While the idea of rolling attack and damage dice is tempting, what if your attack dice miss, and you roll max value on all the damage dice? Not likely to happen, but it could.

So, I like to wait to roll damage after I know it's a hit.

They're just plastic.

I just noticed this in that link. What sick person drills a hole in dice? (Yeah, they do it at casinos to mark which dice are "used", ubt I still think that's a bit extreme and cruel.)...they're just plastic. Do you think that this upsets the die in any way other than moving its center of gravity?

A big rule at our gaming table is that nobody's allowed to add up multi-dice damage except the caster/roller. Nothing is more frustrating that shaking them bones in your hand, and that wee twinkle of madness in your eye as your Empowered Fireball goes off right in the middle of the ring of ogres . . . you roll the dice out on the table, get that whole 'first impressions' thing of how the numbers look ( i.e. lots of 5's and 5's . . . few 1's and 2's ) . . . then some low-life scum pops up and says "27 points . . . just below average . . "

. . . pah. It is ettiquette to let the dice roller tally the dice. If you're faster on the count than them . . . sit quietly and wait. It's their spell, not yours.

I have just retired my favourite die, a big purple d20. It rolls a natural 20 very infrequently, but it seems to roll between 14-18 a lot. It saw me up to 17th level, and fought off a god . . . so it is now retired, ne'er to be used again.

I also have a small horde of tiny 3mm x 3mm x 3mm d6, that I used for energy effects, red for fire, blue for electical, etc. They're so small, they don't take up much room . . . however, one loses something in the theatrics when one is rolling 10d6 damage, and those 10d6 take up the size of a dime. They lack that whole 'noisey shaking' intimidation thing. And the pips can be bloody hard to read, too . . .
hmmmm

You got ripped off.

And?
Thurbane

05-25-06, 03:09 AM
I once had a green d20 that rolled well above average most of the time, but seemed to have aknack for failing at the worst possible time (saves vs. petrification etc.).

I took the dice, wrapped it in a cloth, and pulverise it with a claw hammer. I then kept the fragments in a transparent container as a warning to my other dice.

:D

...I have also gamed with a few people who insist on placing their dice on the table with highest numbers facing up..so the molecules will all drop to the bottom, making the bottom heavier and more likely to roll a 20. :P

Yup. Anything more than a buck-a-die (brand-new) is too much for normal dice.

Still, there's far worse things to buy in life than a metric ton of dice, and ultimately if you were satisfied and enjoyed them then that's all that matters.

Me, I just want enough dice to fill my Buffy the Vampire Slayer Chupa Chups can/paint bucket. It's only about half-full now.

I have bought several of the Pound of Dice

but it all comes down to I have my two special d20s

One is a blue and white speckled one with white numbering and a kanji or katakana character for the 20 9I have no idea what it says, I jsut liked it) It rolls "Average" niether particularly well or bad.

This is my general use die

Then I have my "Satan Die" This a d20 with a very dark blue marbling color on it and black lettering, kinda hard to read really. I am partly convinced it is possesed. It either rolls really good or really bad. There is no inbetween. This die is only rolled at desperate times.

Buying hundreds and thousands of dice is vain, useless, and stupid (sorry for the tough love). All the problems we have in the world today we need money to fight, and a number of people spend hundreds of dollars on completely useless additional sets of dice just out of vanity. It's a game, not a lifestyle. You have a four-, six-, eight-, ten-, twelve, twenty-, and percentile-die, and to play and fully enjoy the game you do not need any more than a single of each type (unless you want more d6's to speed up high-level play; more power to you!) per person, and a group of friends circulating a single set around the table even aids in the mutuality of togetherness.

Die rolling superstitions are dumb as dirt. If a die rolls unusually favorable or unfavorable results, it's probably rigged or is not correctly balanced.

Get real: if you have a 100d6 roll or more (!!), mathematically results will always curve back to average or extremely close to average. You're just wasting your time rolling that many die.

If you want to buy dice in bulk reliably there is pound of dice (best ever) or bag-o-dice (also cheap and really good, but I've heard it's low on the d20s).

1:
Once played with a guy who didnt let anyone touch his dices if they did he would throw away that dice. He also once stabbed a guy in the hand with a fork for touching his dices

That's terrible

2:
A guy keept doing low rolls with his D20's ending in him taking all his dices. Lining them up around a glass picking one of his dices put it into the glass filled it with a flamable liquid, BBQ it and say "There you see what happends if you keep on screwing me over"
He did a 20 on the next roll

Heh, that's what I call wasted time, energy, and superstitious belief in the power of a tiny mundane piece of plastic to tumble the way you want it to.

But I'm no party pooper. I love D&D but wish to defeat some of the problems of the game and the community. Happy gaming. :D

I’m ever on the lookout for a d20 the size of a bowling ball.

I have a plush d20 about that size.

I have a complete set of plush dice. Pewter, 5 different gemstones, several necklaces, glass, d7, d34, d30, d100, d26, zodiac dice, chocolate dice, petrified wood, bone, brass, marble, wood, digital d6s, gold plated dice, four d6s with my name on them, dice so small that I can fit a dozen into a small spoon, and my original set of dice from 1979 (the d20 is almost a marble now). I think all together, I have about 400 dice but I can't be sure. I lost count a while ago. I have so many different dice I have no idea what I would do with them all. I have alignment dice, hit location dice, treasure dice, weather dice, syllable dice, dice within dice (d6s and d10s), oblong dice, paper dice, fumble dice, and plenty more I can't think of right now.

I have a small addiction that I am working on feeding more and more every day...

Die rolling superstitions are dumb as dirt. If a die rolls unusually favorable or unfavorable results, it's probably rigged or is not correctly balanced.

It's no more stupid than people who have their lucky blanket, pen, underwear, number, color, or anything else for that matter. While we know that it is just superstition, it's fun nonetheless. While I think that stabbing someone with a fork is going to far, I don't think that it is too much to ask that someone doesn't just grab your dice. At a minimum it's rude to just take someone's stuff without asking. I don't care if it's dice, a pen, or their car. People should be polite and ask. My answer would be "no, get your own dice thanks for asking."

People tend to remember significant events (or perceived significant events). Full moon comes to mind as an example. If they think that every time they use the red d20 they roll over a 15, then great, let them think that. You and I know that statistically it isn't happening, but it's still something that keeps them happy with no harm done.
hmmmm

You could say the same thing about buying more car than you absolutely need, or a bigger house than you need, or more (or name brand) clothes. In fact, you could say the same thing about any entertainment expense. It would still be rude, but you could. :)

In the end, judging others and how they choose to spend their money seems to me to be more stupid than any of the above.
