Dice Manufacturers... What's a good one? [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-30-06, 08:05 PM I am not new to roleplaying by any means of the word, and I own tons of dice. I normally buy my dice at my local stores, and since I am from central Indiana I have ordered lots of dice from Chessex. I have also ordered dice from Crystal Caste (they make lots of dice out of minerals like jade or amethyst). I just ordered a d20 from them that is actually made from the tusk of a pre-historic Mammoth! The Pre-historic mammoth ivory d20 is without a doubt my current favorite 20 sider. I was just wondering if anyone else has come across any other good makers of dice? Not necessarily special gem dice like I have mentioned but just good ol' dice? Any suggestions?

05-31-06, 08:16 PM Lately we seem to largely be down to just 3 major polyhedral dice makers--Crystal Caste, Chessex, and Koplow. All 3 make a good product. The Koplow dice tend to be the most basic--they have a useful line of dice tubes with d4, 3d6, d8, d10, d20, and d% (the 00-90 10-sider useful for rolling percentile). The dice are mostly fairly plain, but nicely priced.

Chessex and Crystal Caste have basic dice sets as well, but also make the really pretty dice made with newer plastics technologies. AFAIK, Crystal Caste is the only one making the actual stone dice.

06-03-06, 06:36 PM Way back in tha day, Armory set the standard for dice. I remember gamers were screaming for an improvement over the dice that came with the original boxed set. The boxed-set dice were fabled for their slow-shattering behavior, giving rounded corners. This was in the early 1980s. Then Armory came out with a transparent set that came with a crayon. These were fabled for their ability to fudge and cheat, owing to incomplete coloring with the crayon. Then in the late 1980s companies came out with painted-number dice, to the relief of DMs everywhere.

I have a can of Armory primer at home, and know they're still in business.

I would recommend a visit to www.rpgshop.com. I've had a good experience ordering from them.

06-03-06, 08:56 PM I have a bunch of generic dice from those plastic tubes with the red caps (forgot the company name). Anywho, I'm holding out for a set of gaming dice from Franklin Mint :cool:

06-04-06, 08:46 PM Coridan--Those are probably the Koplow Games dice I mentioned. They're kinda the baseline for dice these days--not fancy, but reliable and inexpensive.
