Wahnsinn 04-15-07, 08:06 PM	Hi, everyone I mainly lurk here, but after quite a long hiatus I'm just getting back into D&D. The books weren't a problem to purchase: dice are. There are no local gaming stores that are convenient for me to visit. What are some good recommendations for dice and an online site to buy? I've been looking at Crystal Caste 7 dice set (metal? stone?); Koplow and Chessix. My big concerns are: Is a 7 dice set is enough (e.g. rolling multiple d4s or d6s for casters and the like)? If not, what sets can you purchase additional matching dice for? What would be a good quality dice set to buy (e.g. lasting quality, attractiveness, no imperfections especially regarding fair rolls)? And, of course, what is a good site to purchase from? Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

docballen 04-15-07, 09:12 PM	Chessex and Crystal Caste are the alpha and omega for buying dice. Everyone else sells Chessex and Crystal Caste dice. Pick a set you like the looks of and buy it. (Or buy two sets in case you lose one die in the set.) I bought one set from Chessex (through a local shop) and wish I had been able to get the six-siders. (They were out of the color I bought.) (I prefer the "rounded edge" dice to the precision ones, but that's just me. I'm afraid I'll chip them and then they won't roll right.)
Edymnion 04-15-07, 09:22 PM	Yeah, Chessex is the name for workhorse playing dice. Crystal Caste carries the "ego dice" in precious metals and semi-precious gemstones that aren't really made for day to day rolling, but more of the "Dude, you have SOLID GOLD DICE!" nerdgasm responce.

The Deluxe Dice are mottled green and blue with touches of yellow. The numbers are gold. I think they look pretty nice. They aren't incredibly easy to read from a distance. The dice bag is pretty nice, with the D&D logo embroidered on it. I've got quite a few dice from all around, including the elven rune dice mentioned before, some of the aluminum dice coated with a copper color, some Gamescience dice (a set of polyhedrals plus a d3, d7, and d24), 3d6 with japanese numbers (which I think make the DM worry I'm cheating ;)), and a cube d3 from an E.T. boardgame (which somebody borrowed for a session and didn't realize wasn't a d6). My preferred way of buying dice is to go to a shop and buy singles, but this isn't always feasible.

Tiberien 07-06-07, 12:46 PM	WotC Logan gave a good description of the D&D deluxe dice. I'll add that it's a nice black velvety dice bag, the set includes 4d6's, 2 d10 (marked for percentile rolling) and 1 of each other type. They also feel pretty good, not too light in the palm, and the two sets I have roll pretty well on average. Until I got my Deluxe D&D Dice (and still for "hard" encouters) I loved my Gamescience dice. They are legendary for pulling out the high numbers when I need them. They are also durable, nice looking and are guaranteed for a few years. In fact, I've been using the same ones since '92, no chips on them or anything. For starting out, one full set is good ("set" including 4d6 and 2d10s such as the Deluxe have). When you'll get higher level you'll want tons though for rolling 10d6 and so on. Plus extras if you DM. I keep a beach bucket full of cheap chessex stuff handy for my slacker friends that don't have (or forget) their own to have a pile of player's dice when gaming here at our place.

Tekumel 07-06-07, 11:05 PM	A pound of dice is the way to go if you just need DICE, and lots of them. If you just want a nice set for yourself, I *HIGHLY* recommend direct ordering from Crystal Caste. 1. Their dice are great. Like docballen said above, they're one of the most widely distributed brands, and for good reason. 2. Their customer service is GREAT. In late 2004/early 2005, I was deployed to Iraq, and a bunch of guys in my unit wanted to get a game going. Books were ordered from Amazon, and everybody got their own dice from various places. Being the showoff I am, I wanted a set of Dwarven Metal. I'd seen somewhere on the site that they shipped to APO/FPO (Overseas military addresses), but the order form on the site didn't support it. So I called them up, and explained the situation. The rep I spoke to went silent for a sec, and asked if I was seriously calling from Iraq. I assured him that I was, and he said something to the effect of "Wow, I'm pretty sure you're the first order we've had from over there." He proceeded to take my order, and when I asked about getting extra dice (the Dwarven Metal sets are 7 piece, I wanted 3 or 4 d6), he put me on hold for a second to check stock, and when he came back he said they not only had extra, but they were going to throw them in for free instead of the small charge they normally add per extra die. If you have any ambition to order the Metal dice, let me say, they are GREAT showpieces, but hold up very well in day-to-day use. They are HEAVY though. 1 7 piece 12mm set weighs approximately 3 times as much as a standard sized plastic set. They ship with a small coin-purse sized leather bag, which to this day looks like new. Again, I can't recommend these guys highly enough. I need another set of dice shortly, and I can't see myself going anywhere but directly back to Crystal Caste.
Gorbacz 07-07-07, 06:44 AM	I used to have plenty of Chessex and Crystals - until one day I decided they are simply butt ugly and went on to search for a more eye-pleasing alternative. My reasoning was - hey, I have beautiful full colour books, stunning full colour miniatures, plain cool GM screen, artsy character sheets (yes I am a geek, shoot me) and there I am, rolling some plain looking dice. I usually end up raiding the Chessex booth at Dragoncon to see what kind of kewl dice they have each year. And grumble as I spend about $20 or so on various dice (I just get what ones I need, rather than full sets-don't need that many d12s!)

They're d6s, but with Sauron's eye for the 1. you also have to be careful with the dwarven dice as they are coated not solid. i think it is steel underneath, and the finish metal will wear off over time, or quickly as i have seem with the brass if they are nor all that good. but they will make efforts to replace them for you within a ceratin amount of time. i here the DDM night below dice was nice. it had a grave marker as the 20 i think... maybe a staff emmber or someone else could post a picture of one, or a whole set if they were different colors.

SlanderPanic 07-17-07, 01:25 PM	Gamestation (http://gamestation.net) is a good online die vendor, though I'm somewhat partial to them because they sell Gamescience. I'm a fan of Gamescience dice, though I have regrettably few at the moment. When it comes right down to it, I absolutely cannot recommend Koplow dice enough. I first bought a tube of their oversized dice on a whim when I was working in a game store last year. I used them in D&D that very night and they quickly became my go-to dice. I bought a standard-sized set a couple of months later. They're aesthetically-pleasing, non-gimmicky, and have a great feel. They're also well-balanced, moreso than many of my other sets. If anything, I've found that Chessex dice tend to skew low in repeated rolls. I don't have that issue with my Koplows. I don't recall if any of my dice are Crystal Caste or not, so I can't really provide feedback there. Here's a crappy cellphone photo to illustrate the difference between the oversized sets and other dice. The top row features a giant d20 and my Zocchihedron (the legendary 100-sided die!) The middle row is my set of oversized Koplows, which I tend to call my "chunky dice." The bottom row is a standard Chessex set that I picked up about a year ago. Kamin_Majere 07-17-07, 04:35 PM	I highly Recommend Crystal Caste dice. When i used to own a LGS they were my primary supplier. When i first opened the store and was scrambling to get retail agrements set up and was pulling my hair out trying to find vendors to allow me to stock my store, i called Crystal Caste and Robert never asked me any question. Just congradulated me on opening the store and asked what i needed. He even threw in free shipping for my order. Little things like that you remember alot when your up to your eyeballs in legal crap and have people at the front door wanting to buy stuff and the larger vendors make you jump through 7 diffrent hoops to even start getting things for your shelves. Plus i love their dice. I cant believe how well the Stone and metal dice sold, they are really beautiful though. The most popular ones were the hemitite and silver (at my store anyway) but i think i sold 2 or 3 of each type. I never could keep a set long enough to get one myself though. The once or twice i did some one would ask if i still had any so i would end up selling them mine :(

I had one friend make a set of origami dice for me once. I'm sure they aren't hard to make, but it's an example of how my friends go out of their way to increase my dice collection.

I am superstitious, so I go to my FLGS and pick out (from 20+ bins) dice. $.05 for everything up to d20s, jumbo normal dice and d30s for $.15, and odd stuff for $.25. I have dice for every type of attack imaginable. Vorpal: several dice that are black with a single silver streak through. Fire attacks: lots of dice with hot color (orange, red, etc.) themes. You get the idea - I'm particularly proud of my attack d20. It's gunmetal grey with light grey lettering and a sword in place of the 20.
Becket 07-25-07, 06:21 AM	About five years ago, me and a few friends were at Megacon in Orlando, Fl., Chessex had a booth there, they had some cool sets of prototype dice, and con-only flavors as well, they also had this giant bin, must have been about an 80 gallon tank of their "pound o dice" but loose, so you could pick and choose, well, as the vendors are closing up on the final day, my friend offers the guy running it $10 for the picked over remains in the bottom of the tub, well ... this filled up two whole paper grocery bags :eek: out of all that, there were only 2 complete sets in the whole thing, one of them was this grotesque color which can only be described as cotton candy pink base color with "jelly belly butter popcorn" as the lettering color, he claims it to be his luckeyest set of dice.
