I treat my dice like pets. I pet them and roll them gently and sometimes feed them my eraser chips if they roll criticals...cuz my DM uses them and I'm always getting killed!

I always roll them on an open book like the DMG or Players Handbook.

NEVER TOUCH MY DICE!!!!

I have three dice bags. One for the dice I am using, one for the rest, and a punishment bag. If a die starts rolling bad it goes in the punishment bag with the other bad dice. Then the bag goes in the freezer.

When ever I have a bad dice day, I ''bless'' my dice by washing them. But whenever we are about to play, I roll all my dice and I use only the higher rolling ones.

Once, keep in mind this wasn't for D&D, I rolled all my D6's and chose the two highest and gave the others to my friend to use because he forgot his. Needless to say, he rolled tons of critical misses, and no critical hits (he was even missing attacks when he only needed a four, and he got to roll two dice at once). With the two I kept, I was hitting everything :D

My friend sleeps with his dice.

I'm not kidding.

Anyway, I heard a few superstitions. The only one I engage in is when Im not lgging them around I lay them from smallest to largest in order. (d4 to d20, lost my d30.)

I also have a "Lucky" d20. Its a swirling blue with white lettering. I almost destroyed a group I was DMing. Kept rolling 16 or higher with it. Managed to kill one, but we were playing with fate points, so shes fine. I apologized for using my lucky d20.

I HATE when someone touches my dices I feel that they will curse me for the reminder of the night.

Also, I have 1 set of dice, again I feel they would curse me for using other dices...

My first meaningless roll of the session is always 18-20. Like "hmm, my character wakes up...how hungry is he?...oh look, he's 20 hungry..."

It doesn't work for initiative, saves, to hit, or anything.

Sometimes if it is taking a while for the game to start up (people late, pointless discussions... etc)

I will roll every die repeatedly until I get the highest value, and let them all sit like that until I actually need them. It's my way of teaching them what number I want.

My friend once drew what we called the omnigram/multigram because it had both the pentagram and the hexagram in it (not to mention other similar things). He put his dice on this thing and his dice have been rolling well ever since.

Then there was that time when he drew the philosophers stone, allthough it wasn't perfect.

I do that, too. I have three sets of dice in my bag and I'll line the first set up d4, d6... d20. On the next set, I'll reverse the order, d20, d12... d4. The last set resumes the normal order. The two-digit d10 sits on the top and bottom of the rows, adjacent to the single digit d10. It adds a nice touch of chaos to my game.

Huh, I lost my d30, too (I actually think my relatives have it, but I really don't need it).:behold:

well i had a pair of dice that would seem to roll high then low like clock work. Two D20's black with silver numbers. But i had to roll them both. One would roll high then i switched to the other, then i switched back to the first which would now roll low. so i would learn to save the stored high roll for when i needed it...

I have a friend that "tunes" his dice, keeps rolling untill 4 in a row are above 15.

I am just always unlucky, so i gave up on ehtat a long timae ago, however when i bought the dice, i had the foresight to buy pink ones, havent lost a single one yet! No one wants to use em! (of cource i am really unlucky...)

I allways have my dice sit highest number up. so like allways have my d20's with the 20 up, the d10 with the zero up etc. One time i actually whiped out a monster our dm didn't think we could kill like this. :D

d4's: Don't care much, relatively random and will respond only to occasional positive reinforcement.
d6's: Responsive and friendly - but sometimes not actually aware that "6" is better than "1"
d8's: Enthusiastic at first, but usually tire quickly after rolling a lot of hit dice.
d10's: Reliable and trustworthy - especially in situations when you NEED a 10.
d12's: Jealous, as they don't see as much action as the other dice. Sometimes, they're out for revenge. Other times, they just appreciate the attention.
d20's: EVIL. The d20 is always the bad die of the bunch - virtually untrainable. Its personality is at least as multifaceted as it's appearance.

Don't EVER store your dice high-side-up, kids -- it uses up all the luck! Store them ones-up -- that way, all the luck sinks to the bottom and will be there on the good side next time you roll.

When my DM starts rolling badly, he "cleanses" the bad luck from his dice by putting them in his mouth and spitting them back out to make his next roll.

It doesn't work, but he does it at least once a session. The worst part is that he does it all from behind my (now saliva-coated) DM's screen.

But he doesn't get any arguments when he tells someone "don't touch my dice."

A friend bought a lot of very small d6s. Whenever one rolled a "1", he took it up, showed it to the other d6s, said "Now you'll see what happens when you're bad" and swallowed it.

It's not that he got weird by playing Dungeons and Dragons. But it certainly gave him new ways to practice his weirdness.

I'm pretty skeptical about dice superstitions, but the wierdest I've heard about was a buddy of mine with a big belly who kept his d20 in his navel until it was required for making a roll. (Nobody else ever tried to roll it.)

First of all, NEVER roll on paper. We've done that in the past and the rolls have been constantly bad. ^_^;;

For me, I make dice bad. I had my very first set of dice, but then they went all bad on me. I traded dice with a friend and the new set worked fine for a while. Then, ultimately, they started to go bad and are now horrible to roll. My friend, on the other hand, is rolling decent with the set.

heheheh.....

I got him back, though, by rolling his special large lucky d20 behind his back and causing it to roll badly for a while ::evil:: (don't worry, it's fine, now)

We have special trays we roll the dice in. I will only roll in the one made out of an old cigar box. The DM likes a cherry wood butler's tray.

Well, this one is one that almost everybody in the gaming groups that I belong have: Don't use the same D20 to confirm criticals or possible deathblows. Leave the number showing to kind of show the other dice what you want.

And personally, my luck does tend to draw towards making that crucial roll, so another one that I use is rolling two or three D20 on my hand, and then just let one drop to roll.

About dice, anyway...

I don't have any silly quirks about dice rolling. There are a few dice I like better than others, but that's because the dice have meaning for me. There is my clear GameScience d20 and my blue and purple D20 that only came in the Torg boxes set. They are my dice and I don't let players use them just because it really irks them that I have 'special dice'.

One thing that ticks me off and is very common if the 1-die-at-a-time rollers. People who rolls any number of dice one at a time and cheer or groan over every die until they are all on the table. Man that's annoying. Especially when you play a game like Champions and the hero blasts a villain with 32 dice and wants to roll one at a time...

I warm about that once, then burn character sheets...

In one gaming group the ower of the house we played at got ahold of a dice rolling apperatus where you dropped the dice down a chute and they rolled out into a felt lined tray. We used this in a number of games and it was fun for a while, but a certain player made it his own superstition and it went the way of all the earth (was put away in a closet...).

I'll allow just about any other dice superstition as long as it doesn't detract from the game or become annoying.

Another thing I dislike is people who constantly roll dice for no reason. Their characetrs tend to become arrow catchers...

On a positive note. Given 3 or 4 minutes I can figure out how to roll a 4 on any d4. But it only works if you roll one at a time, so I don't do it unless I'm impressing the newbies... =^.^=

I've always believed that if you touch my lucky dice, it's a sure sign that your head is about to fall off.

Of course, since I have evidence to back this up, I'm not sure it counts as a superstition. ;)

About half my group (me included) do this. And get picky if other people leave them off. I will, however, occasionally leave the d20 on other high numbers, 'cos an 18s pretty good as well.

Oh and character specific d20s. Otherwise you're using the other characters rolls, which is a bit ugly.

General for my group:
Starting a new game? New set of dice.

Making a new character? New set of dice.

Dice rolling badly? New set of dice.

We have a lot of dice.

We have players that cannot stand to share dice, and will physically defend their dice from the touch of others. Some of our players would make sure that they had a wide open area they could roll in, and would do the one-at-a-time thing. Other times they'd roll slowly enough that if they saw a bad number come up they'd try and bump that die with another to tip it. (Cheating in my book.) We've had players that have to roll on a book, even if it's a small one they have to roll only on there and discount any die that rolls off. One of my players loves big dice, and we call them honesty dice, but others feel they're too big to be really random and demand to have very tiny dice, which we call cheater dice because they're impossible to read from any distance.

I use the 'highest number up at rest system'.:)

I once did a small experiment to see how often the 20 would come up on my dice. I roled them until it gave me a 20 and then noted the result and started again counting from 0. The average is that it takes about 20 rolls to get a 20 (go figure.) I don't beleive in superstition, never have either. It's all about luck. I can be entire sessions whithout a 20 or roll four 20 and three 1 in a single session. I may like to play DnD to escape reality, but I prefer what is proven and known. A perfectly balanced d20 should roll one 20 for 20 rolls on average.

I have 3 containers for mine
One is the "first aid for gaming" first aid kit with dice, pens, pencils, erasers, a few minis, and a small notebok.
Next is my primary die bag, with 6 sets that stay with the rule books and character sheets. These sets change when one set begins to consistantly roll low.
Third is the "box of loners" a good sized box with all the non-set dice I have along with the sets that have rolled constantly low for at least a month. If anyone at the table forgot their dice they can choose from them.

Saw one person with a bucket o' dice, plastic bucket the size of a KFC bucket filled with dice, he had a small bag with his favored dice and would occasionally dump out the bucket to pull a set out to see if they had learned their lesson and would roll better now.

Well, if superstition works, that's great, if not, then what does it matter? And it can still roll a mathematical spread and be lucky. It just means rolling 1's for spotting things the rogue'll see anyway, and 20's when it comes to scything the Big bad guy through the spine.

A perfectly balanced d20 should roll one 20 for 20 rolls on average.

True, for the most part. A perfectly balanced d20 just has an equal chance of any roll landing an any side. So rolling twenty times there would be a 64% chance of it landing on a twenty one or more times.

Me personally my dice hate me i; have bouts of really bad luck nothing above a 5 for 20 rolls and have bouts of good luck 3 20's in a row. My dice tend to roll better for other people though. Though i do have my favorite dice like 3 most of the time they become lost for a period of time then i find them again in akward places. My D4's almost never let me down

Here's a new one i do:
I have a very lucky d6 that I charge by having 6 up all week until the session then I bring it there, but I keep it in my pocket and never roll it. So far it seems to bring luck.

I grabbed a friend's d20.
And she stuck me with her pencil.

Don't mess with a superstitious player's dice.

I always take a bunch with me, some for others, thenI have my own. I tend to build towers with them during those parts that involve the DM taking a player aside for something and the rest of us already planned our next venture, and the chinese food is gone. :D At one point I had a little dice metropolis going it took so long.

I also have the punishment pile for the bad dice. I also found that d12s are definately the rebel of the bunch and only occationaly react to positive reinforcement. I actually found I have a d20 that listens when I threaten to put it with the rest of the bad dice. Really bad dice get beaten with the pencil, and kept away from other dice lest they start corrupting them.

And about the d4 trick, I know that one. If it's the same one. I find that it's all in the wrist, I had a 4 come up about 10 times in a row once, the die wasn't weighted and I actually did throw the thing. :D

After rereading what I post, I think I need to stop being so superstitious.

My dice haven't been happy unless they're in a leather dice bag. I think they've been unhappy with me over the last couple years about the lack of use. (I havn't been able to keep a regualr game going.)

I think I might crochet a bag for them and see if they like it.

Would you guys have an interest in hand crocheted dice bags? I'm thinking of making a few and putting them on Ebay. It'd be out of cotton. If people really like them, maybe I'll do a couple out of silk or linen.

If a die has been particularly naughty I gather all the other dice up, arrange them in a semi-circle around the offending die, and proceed to shatter it with a 10 lb hammer in order to teach the rest of them what happens if you cross me.
