this is my first message on the boards.First of all its great to see u all in here.
i have some aromatic chillies for your wine. Try and enjoy the conversation.

I wonder what could be used instead of our colorfull dices. Think that you were in a mountain camp with friends and you lost the dices. You are the DM and everybody is looking forward to play by the fire.
Well i had this problem in the past but i believe i will find more and more solutions with your creative ideas.

If you like the wine with my chillies just ask for more.

Well, here's a method I have used in the past that is not perfect, but does work after a sort:

For a d20:

DM picks a number between 1 and 20 and writes it down on a piece of paper. (or just remembers it if paper is not available). This number is now "1." The player then picks a number between 1 and 20 and the actual roll is based on how far away the number is from the number the DM picked.

Example:
DM picks 12.
Player 1 picks 14, Player 2 picks 10, Player 3 picks 20, Player 4 picks 1
Player1 rolled a 3, Player 2 rolled a 19, Player 3 rolled an 8, Player 4 rolled a 9

10-18-05, 10:04 AM Sadly (or perhaps, luckily), such things would never happen with my gaming group. At least two or three of us always have at least one set (sometimes more) within arm's reach.

Just the other day, I was walking around the grocery store with one of my players. I asked him if I should get the Alfredo sauce or the Four Cheese sauce. He pulled out a pair of percentile dice and rolled them on the shelf and announced: "ALFREDO!!!!!!" as loud as he could. Hillarity.

More to the topic at hand, if you want a way to do it without the dice, just use the average. On some d20 rolls, you can take 20; but all other times you're considered to be "taking 10" even if the rules would say otherwise.

Same thing with damage rolls and such, just use the average. Sure, it makes things boring, but that's what D&D is without dice. :P

Die is singular, dice is plural. Do not pluralize a word that is already plural. Sorry, big pet peeve.

10-18-05, 11:00 AM If you have paper and pen you can always resort to what the early sets of D&D came standard with:

Chits.

Make little slips of paper numbered 1-20, 1-12, 1-10, 1-8, 1-6, and 1-4.

Put each set in it's own cup or hat or whatever, and the players and DM draws a chit when a number is needed. The chit is returned to the cup once read.

% can be done by drawing out of the 1-10 twice. The first # is the 10's place, the second is the one's place.

OR

You could just put the books away and do it roleplay style.

Chits were such a nightmare back then - but it was all we had. We didn't know they made dice of all the funky sides.

10-18-05, 11:16 AM Heh... chits. When I ran a game in middle school we had to do that because the teachers wouldn't let us bring in dice for some stupid reason. We only did one session that way then just decided to only play at someone's house.

For combat you can always do the Rock-Paper-Scissors. You do it once for ever time you get to attack. If you win, you hit for average damage, if you lose then you miss. Might want to adapt that so that for every +2 or maybe even +3 you get to Throw again if you missed the previous time. Did that once before too.

Spinwheels work. You only need one. You can make one with a piece of cardboard, a pen and any little piece of metal wire, like a paperclip. Or grab one out of your Twister game.

The beauty thing is, you only really need one. You draw the smaller odds around the inside, closer to the pointer, like 1, 2, 3, 4, for a d4. Next 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Outside that, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, etc. You just name which "die" you are using, and flick the pointer.

Honestly, it is a mistake most people who pick up English as a second language do not make, lest they are taught the mistake by a native English speaker who doesn't know (as many of the younger generation for some strange reason do not).

As for laying off, I wasn't exactly jumping down his throat, and I had already apologized if I had come across that way.

10-18-05, 03:39 PM I've used my TI-85 graphing calculators' random number functions to replace my dice in a few situations. :)

it had 8 sides, first we numbered the sides and than rolled the pencil :)
it was very very funny (the fighter did not want to use her longsword).

(we still use d20 to choose "the unlucky person of the day" for shopping) :)

This reminds me of a guy I once knew. His one year old knew that dice were for rolling, not eating.

Also had a four year old sit in on a session once. He got to be the official dice rolle and help us add. ;)
