Started for the benefit of newcomers to this message board, it was originally trollbill who had compiled a list of commonly used terms found here. Since then numerous members of the boards have contributed to an always up to date new version of the famous and original
Unofficial Dictionary of common D&D Message Board Terminology.
In taking up trollbill's legacy by posting on this board you will provide past, present and future board users with what grows more and more to be a comprehensive guide for everyone surfing the boards and with an interest in the multifaceted world of D&D.

As the starter of this thread I promise to do my best and hope for the help and support of all of you.
So let's get started with:

SYLVAROTH'S
UNOFFICIAL DICTIONARY OF COMMON D&D MESSAGE BOARD TERMINOLOGY (v1.2)

If you have any questions, suggestions, or additions, please post them here. The criteria and formatting of additions to the Dictionary of Terminology are as follows:

CRITERIA

The purpose of this Dictionary, is, as always, to define terms as they are used. How one member decides how another member meets the criteria of a given definition is moot.
The following criteria is used in determining the selection of entries for the Dictionary of Terminology:
The entry should have a common use on these boards, i.e. terms used by local gaming groups that do not appear regularly on these boards do not qualify.
The entry should have appeared on multiple threads and have been used by multiple users in a consistent fashion. Objective evidence of this, such as links to the pertinent posts, is preferable over subjective commentary.
A term entry should have a meaning on the D&D message boards that does not match its common dictionary definition or its definition in the Core Rules.
The entry should not violate the CoC (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=community/coc) .
Terms that appear repeatedly with the comment “What does this mean?” are excellent candidates for The Dictionary.
Links should be relevant to the definition and should be to locations that are relatively static so as to prevent the need to constantly update the links. Also remember that links to a commercial web site are a violation of the CoC (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=community/coc).

FORMATTING

If you wish to add an entry to the Dictionary you can faciliate my work by cobying the below formatting for new entries:
[ B]Term (part of speech):[ /B] A short, to the heart getting description of the subject of the entry
; see also XXX. <<closely related entries
[ URL=http://...]<link>[ /URL] <<if possible provide a link for an examplary use on the boards
Please note, that the entry formatting of SECTION II and III only resemble the above but are not as extensive.

I think most people understand broken to mean "unbalanced in a way that makes it too powerful".

Perhaps you could add that to the definition, because unbalanced could mean useless, therefore just to say broken = unbalanced is misleading.

Good to see an update of the dictonary of Terminonlogy after so long. I have a suggestion:

I've seen the term "Meat Shield" used as a surrogate for "Tank," so that might deserve an addition.

Meat Shield (Noun): 1: A (sometimes derogotory) term for a member of the party who's main purpose is to absorb damage in melee, keeping the opponent occupied while the rest of the party casts spells, shoots arrows, etc. from behind. 2: A Tank.

I will see to update this thread once a week from now on, but it is a little tiring to hop from the old -not to say dead terminology thread- and back to this one to keep things running.

Please post your questions, suggestions and answers here, so we all can have our fair share of the honour of carrying on Trollbill's work.

I've seen a lot of people who use the phrase "Your DM should be shot. in the face. With a hammer." here, or refering to "hammerguns" and such. Perhaps an entry on that should be added?

I came up with the phrase, in the "What's a Player to do?" forum; specifically, in the ridiculous house rules thread. Someone posted their ex-DMs absolutely horrifying house rules, and in response to one of them I said "This makes absolutely no sense. Your DM should be shot. In the face. With a hammer." A day later, someone asked if they could put that quote in their sig. Then others followed, and I started seeing it all over these forums. Sphyre made a smiley for it too: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/smileys/shoothammer.gif I feel like an internet celebrity now. :D

As for use, I've always seen it used at the beginning of a post, as an announcement. And only used in these specific threads we complain about. We could say "God just killed a kitten because you made a pointless and overdone thread on an incorrect assumption." We say "MRAOW! *kaboom*" instead.

Also, Tempest Stormwind's phrase 'Go Nova' is a definite addition.

Go Nova (verb): To use up all of your character's daily resources in a short period of time, either to defeat an incredibly strong foe or to show off. Players unfamiliar with the Psionics system and/or playing in a campaign with only 1 encounter of equal level/day have a tendency to use this strategy rather than show restraint. All full casters (with the exception of the Bard and the Warlock) have some ability to go nova. Etymology: astronomy, derived from the word nova, a noun referring to the massive explosion caused by a dying star. Introduced by member TempestStormwind (can't remember what thread though, ask him).
Sylvaroth

06-04-05, 09:33 PM
Perfect, could you provide a similar entry for "MRAOW! *kaboom!*"?
Maybe with an addition of its use in the Psionics section?
If it finds frequent use it really deserves an entry in the dictionary.

simen_88

06-29-05, 09:58 AM

Spooney Spoon"ey (-y^), a.
Weak-minded; demonstratively fond; as, spooney lovers. Spelt
also spoony. Colloq.

And "wonky?" Its meaning seems unrelated to "wonk."
simen_88

06-30-05, 07:22 AM
"WordNet (r) 2.0"
wonky
adj 1: turned or twisted toward one side; "a...youth with a
gorgeous red necktie all awry"- G.K.Chesterton; "his
wig was, as the British say, skew-whiff" syn: askew,
awry(p), cockeyed, lopsided, skew-whiff
2: inclined to shake as from weakness or defect; "a rickety
table"; "a wobbly chair with shaky legs"; "the ladder felt
a little wobbly"; "the bridge still stands though one of
the arches is wonky" syn: rickety, shaky, wobbly
also: wonkiest, wonkier

Ah, how I love having several dictionaries in one application.

Sylvaroth: First of all, I'd like you to add ExH to the dictionary, because that's pretty common terminology for the Explorer's Handbook as well as EH. Also, I noticed that you don't have class abbreviations for Eberron classes, so I want you to update and add some if it's alright. Here are my suggestions:

Art: Artificer (Eberron Campaign Setting)
Mwr: Magewright (Eberron Campaign Setting)
Cwa: Cannith Wand Adept (Sharn: City of Towers)
Cel: Citadel Elite (Sharn: City of Towers)
Ssk: Sharn Skymage (Sharn: City of Towers)
Atv: Atavist (Races of Eberron)
Ctr: Cabinet Trickster (Races of Eberron)
Msp: Moonspeaker (Races of Eberron)
Qnm: Quori Nightmare (Races of Eberron)
Rrn: Reachrunner (Races of Eberron)
Rcs: Recaster (Races of Eberron)
Rfo: Reforged (Races of Eberron)
Scs: Spellcarved Soldier (Races of Eberron)
Kph: Knight Phantom (Five Nations)
Dln: Dark Lantern (Five Nations)
Cya: Cyran Avenger (Five Nations)
Bkn: Bone Knight (Five Nations)
Spr: Silver Pyromancer (Five Nations)
Ccm: Cataclysm Mage (Explorer's Handbook)
Thg: Thunder Guide (Explorer's Handbook)
Wcp: Windwright Captain (Explorer's Handbook)

For the Windwright Captain, Wwc would make more sense. Since they wouldn't be used in the same build or campaign anyway, maybe you should put it as Wwc 2 because the War Wizard of Cormyr is already there. I suggest that you change the Temple-Raider of Olidimarra to Tro, to avoid mix-ups between it and the Transmuter.

I tried to make sure that none of them overlapped with any of the other ones that were already listed, though I might've messed up. Feel free to modify them as you see fit.

The Class/PrC list looks kind of 3.0 still, I think there's a lot more Complete PrC's missing. Anybody who wants to check the other Complete books? I might do it some other time, I'm to tired now.

Enm Entropomancer [Complete Divine 3.5] Could be the same as?: Ent: Entropist (Lords of Darkness 3.0)
Nope. They're similar, but the 'mancer is a 10-level PrC that has different abilities than the 5-level Entropist.

I think Min-Maxer means something more specific than simple powergaming (playing to game mechanics rather than roleplaying).

Min-maxing means, when using a point-buy system, to put all the points into key stats and to let the other stats drop to very low values. More metaphorically, it means to build and play characers that are very good at one thing, but lousy at everything else.

Fighters and barbarians that are absolute killing machines until the first time they need to make a will save
Characters with a Cha of 5 and no backstory explaining how that is possible
Archers who are complete hand-to-hand weenies
Mages with massive hatbands and 2hp

The real-life equivalent of these characters would have to be downright freaks of nature. Min-maxing is not just powergaming, it's powergaming done badly. The problem with min-maxed characters is that an encounter will either present no challenge or it will kill them. Wheras powergamed characters are good without much of a downside, but have no role-playing backstory to explain whey they got that way.

(PS: never take a min-maxed fighter to a melee involving nymphs, vampires, or succubi. Seriously.)

Oh, while I am at it:

"Class-dipping": to take one or two levels in classes and prestige classes in order to get unlikely combinations of feats and abilities, usually to create overpowered synergies or to qualify for prestige classes. Eg: taking two levels of Fighter "for the feats", or one level of ranger for free two-weapon-fighting ability.

Might as well.

Best. Epitaph. Evar. (hanging statement): Phrase coined by user TempestStormwind to describe the tombstone of a victim of Death By Awesome; see also Death By Awesome.

Death By Awesome (noun): Refers to the act of killing an opponent by trapping them on the Positive Energy Plane. The ambinent effects of the Positive Energy Plane are eventually lethal to every kind of creature with the exception of constructs, and any non-construct not native or acclimated to the plane will eventually be destroyed unless they can leave (this can be prevented with the use of spells such as Dimensional Anchor. The term was coined here from an inside joke. It was decided the Positive Energy Plane is so full of 'awesomeness' it will make you explode; see also Best. Epitaph. Evar.

"MRAOW!" *KABOOM* (exclamation): A phrase used by Psionics boards regulars to decry the creation of a thread that claims 3.5 Psionics to be overpowered with poor arguments. Such threads were commonplace to the point where the regulars of that board became tired of saying "Every time you make a thread about Psionics being overpowered without doing the research, God kills a kitten." and began using this phrase instead. The joke definition of the phrase goes: "The sound that sounds every time you make yet ANOTHER thread on psionics being overpowered without doing research; see also 'God Kills A Kitten'". Coined by users RadicalTaoist and Reinforcements.

AAAAaaaaaand an acronym.

BIJNTU: But It's Just Not That Uber. Used in balance arguments; sometimes used as BJNTU (But Just Not That Uber) to be grammatically correct.

I feel we need to clarify what the terms 'munchkin', 'twink', 'min/maxxer', and 'powergamer' refer to. I feel that these terms should refer to different things, but I see them all being thrown about all willy-nilly on the boards. We need some clarity here.

Please read the appropriate entries in the dictionary and tell me if they need reworking. If so, please provide entries you feel more fitting.

Please Please PLEASE remove the spoilerblocks. There's really no need, since the things spoilered are the entier point and purpose of the thread.

I use spoilerblocks for the sake of readability. What do you think, should they stay or leave?
