SYLVAROTH’S UNOFFICIAL DICTIONARY
OF COMMON D&D MESSAGE BOARD TYPOS
(v. 1.3)

This thread is dedicated to compile a list of typos frequently found on these boards (words used in a wrong way, misspelled terms, shortcuts aso.). Please refrain from taking this all too serious, but if you have any suggestions, or have an addition you think should be made, please let me know.

This thread is also in no way thought to make fun of the average typoist (which obviously includes me ;) ), but to emphasize, that typos are very important to all written form, since they give the reader something to look for so they aren't distracted by the total lack of content in someones writing.

To make it a little easier for me, suggested entries should follow the below pattern:

Typo: (Term or) Description of the meaning of the typo (see Cross Reference).
<link> (If possible provide a link to the location/s where you saw the typo)

or

Typo: (Term or)
1: Description of the meaning of the typo.

SYLVAROTH’S UNOFFICIAL DICTIONARY OF COMMON D&D MESSAGE BOARD TYPOS, (v. 1)

Diety: (Deity or) a higher enity that has grave problems with overweight and now constantly tries the latest diets in order to lose weight.

Sorceror: (Sorcerer or) a very furious arcane magic user.

Might want to edit that typo (enity?), dude...

Other than that, there's the way too common "Rouge/Rogue" and many more... And though not common, one that got me laughing a lot was "Snort sword" instead of "Short sword"...

Sorceror and sorcerer are alternative spellings, so I'm not sure if it qualifies as a typo (except when referring specifically to the D&D class).

As well as for "also" (you typed aso) and "refrain" (you typed reftrain)...

But, in all seriousness:

Feet (Feat or): A game mechanic that represents an essential part of the character's ability to walk.

No joke. I've seen that typo. I wonder how long will it take till someone typoes "Expert" as "Eggspert"...

Eltheynn - I just corrected the typo (reftrain) you refer to and hope (besides those in the list) I am done now:D .

The other one is not really a typo it is "aso." meaning and so on, but I am sure you wanted to make fun of me :(

Seeker95 - did you actually see this typo on the boards? I am not quite sure what you want to say, could you explain it for the really dumb people (read ME)?

Whoopsie! My bad... Now that you mention it, "also" wouldn't fit there, I should pay more attention. But in no way it was my intention to make fun of you (except that one would expect a post that is about typos to be proofread before posting), and I apologise if it seemed so...

@Seeker: You just couldn't resist, could you? ;)

Well, they aren't directly game-related, but I see these a lot:

You're (your/yours or): An attempt to convey the perceived or factual notion that the equipment you own largely defines your character.

Your (you're or): Cf. you're, with the additional connotation that your value to the party is worth exactly as the resources you carry; it also tells you that whatever mess you're into, your munchkin friends will gladly take care of your body and loot it up to the last copper piece.

UPDATED July 27, 2004 The Wizards message boards will be undergoing an upgrade to the latest available version of its software starting Monday, August 2nd.

At that time, we will be taking the boards down for a few hours during the day to make some needed server software upgrades and then will return service to the message boards. We will then be using a snapshot of the current boards and working to make the boards software changes offline.
The boards will remain live during this period, however, posts made between the snapshot and the switch to the upgraded boards will be lost. This method is in lieu of having to take the current boards down completely for the entire duration of the upgrade. Registration will be turned off during this timeframe as well.

We will work to keep the timeframe of these conditions as short as possible, but it may last as long as a week.

Now that the boards are (for the most part) back online I would like to continue this thread.

I would like to start with this entry I found on trollbill's unofficial dictionary of common D&D message board terminology:
i believe this is where the fabled gazebo came from.

The Gazabo
In the early seventies, Ed Whitchurch ran "his game", and one of the participants was Eric Sorenson. Eric plays something like a computer. When he games, he methodically considers each possibility before choosing his preferred option. If given time, he will invariably pick the optimal solution. It has been known to take weeks. He is otherwise, in all respects, a superior gamer. Eric was playing a Neutral Paladin in Ed's game. He was on some lord's lands when the following exchange occurred:

Ed: You see a well groomed garden. In the middle, on a small hill, you see a gazebo.
Eric: A gazebo? What color is it?
Ed: [pause] It's white, Eric.
Eric: How far away is it?
Ed: About 50 yards.
Eric: How big is it?
Ed: [pause] It's about 30 ft across, 15 ft high, with a pointed top.
Eric: I use my sword to detect good on it.
Ed: It's not good, Eric. It's a gazebo.
Eric: [pause] I call out to it.
Ed: It won't answer. It's a gazebo.
Eric: [pause] I sheathe my sword and draw my bow and arrows. Does it respond in any way?
Ed: No, Eric, it's a gazebo!
Eric: I shoot it with my bow. [roll to hit] What happened?
Ed: There is now a gazebo with an arrow sticking out of it.
Eric: [pause] Wasn't it wounded?
Ed: OF COURSE NOT, ERIC! IT'S A GAZEBO!
Eric: [whimper] But that was a +3 arrow!
Ed: It's a gazebo, Eric, a GAZEBO! If you really want to try to destroy it, you could try to chop it with an axe, I suppose, or you could try to burn it, but I don't know why anybody would even try. It's a @#$%!! gazebo!
Eric: [long pause. He has no axe or fire spells.] I run away.
Ed: [thoroughly frustrated] It's too late. You've awakened the gazebo. It catches you and eats you.
Eric: [reaching for his dice] Maybe I'll roll up a fireusing mage so I can avenge my Paladin.

At this point, the increasingly amused fellow party members restored a modicum of order by explaining to Eric what a gazebo is. Thus ends the tale of Eric and the Dread Gazebo. It could have been worse; at least the gazebo wasn't on a grassy gnoll. Thus ends the tale of Eric and the Dread Gazebo. A little vocabulary is a dangerous thing.

The story of Eric and the Gazebo is Copyright © 1989 by Richard Aronson. Reprinted with permission. The author grants permission to reprint as long as all copyright notices remain with the text.
So relating to this what do you say about the Gazebo/Glabrezu entry:

Eggspert (Expert or): One who knows a great deal about the game's more vocal creator. Some members of this questionably prestigious society can quote both articles and gaming convention comments by said creator.
It took me until just now to get this.

In a discussion about typos, I feel it important to mention a quote from my sig:
"Typos are very important to all written form. It gives the reader something to look for so they aren't distracted by the total lack of content in your writing." - Randy K. Milholland

These are all honest to goodness misteaks that I have seen. (Though the "Plz" isn't really a typo, but I thought it belonged here)

Found in this Half-Ogre (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=10429258) thread:
Too bad the half-ogre is only good at jobs that already give simple and marital weapon proficiency >_>
Marital weapon proficiency ? Is it in Complete Husband guide ? :D

Those are exotic 'weapons'. I believe marital weapons are more along the line of dishes (ordinary or china), vases, etc for marital ranged weapons, kitchen knifes for light marital weapons, and chairs and other furnishings for heavy marital weapons. :evillaugh
2. A bouquet of flowers. (Ever see the fighting that goes on for one of those?)
Actually I did, but I have really never seen them thrashing eachother with the bridal bouquet. :D
Which makes me wonder if there are magic vorpal bride's bouquets. They would require a wedding bouquet of masterwork quality to be enchanted in the first place. Intelligent bridal flowers? Or even cursed ones (though, if you think about it, this could be the cause of the increasing rate of divorces).

Which is exactly why I feel PEACH is implied simply by posting on the web; it is the default posting stance. People who are seeking honest commentary and advice should not have to say so. They should also not have to proclaim that they can take frank replies. If the training wheels are off and you are out on the web, then you need to be able to deal with the contents of that environment or you need to be elsewhere.

What we actually need is a tag acronym for those who think their post is perfect to begin with and who are too fragile to bear critical responses. How about: MOMMY'S BOYS (May Off Myself, Mind Your Sarcasm. Bland Obliging Yesmen Sought). If you put that in your post you would be proclaiming that you can't take criticism and want to hear only praise and adulation. Of course, if someone is that brittle and needy my only advice would be: Go up the arm, not across; you'll never get the job done that way.

Uhhmm.. Is there a better acronym that could be used to describe the stance of asking for dishonest and non-critical replies? P.E.A.C.H., and we can figure it out.

thee hee :D

I'm sure I could think up something a tad risque, but this isn't in the "mature" forum, so I won't. ;)

If you're interested, here's a slightly revised definition:

Lick Lord: (Lich Lord or) a lich whose transformation process goes awry, causing the lich's skin to retain some of the natron used to dry it out, the result of which is that the lich is compulsively licked by deer and other animals attracted to salt whenever it comes near them.
