Hey everyone,

I've been wondering about something for a while now ...

Do some 3.5 d&d books have several covers?

I've noticed that sometimes the cover of certain books as shown on either Amazon.com or the Wizards product site differs from the cover of the book I'm holding in my hands ...

Here are some examples:

Draconomicon
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/c8/Draconomicon.jpg/300px-Draconomicon.jpg http://www.wizards.com/global/images/products_dndacc_176680000_lgpic.jpg

DMG2
http://www.wizards.com/global/images/products_dndacc_863170000_lgpic.jpg http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/0786936878.01._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-dp-500-arrow,TopRight,45,-64_OU01_SCLZZZZZZZ_AA240_SH20_.jpg

Spell Compendium
http://www.wizards.com/global/images/products_dndacc_885987200_lgpic.jpg http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/0786937025.01._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-dp-500-arrow,TopRight,45,-64_OU01_SCLZZZZZZZ_AA240_SH20_.jpg

Another one is Unearthed Arcana. All the images of it I can find on the internet show it with the regular brown cover, but my copy is dark green/blue/black (it's hard to tell and seems to change with the light). I can't find a pic online of that cover, though.

Are some of these covers promos that ended up not getting used? Or are there people out there who actually have copies of these books with the other covers? Just curious ...

Cheers,
Jonny

It's likely just the preliminary artwork, that might go on a book, but get swapped out sometime after the title is announced, but before publishing. I remember seeing somewhere an ad for the MM3, looked like some 4 year old drew it with crayons. The release version had the same general image, although it looks like, you know, quality work.

I thought this was something more along the lines of the time I was trying to track down a mythical 3.5 BoVD. That's the only book that I can think of that has a different cover, without the actual content changing.

I see no difference, subtle if any, between the two images above, other than size.

You don't see that one is blue and the other is brown, or that the one on the left lists Andy Collins, David Noonan and Ed Stark as the authors, whereas the one on the right lists Jesse Decker and David Noonan?

To answer the original question, those are unfinalised working covers. Books with the covers you see online don't exist in the hands of the gaming public, or perhaps at all.

Strangely enough, my DMG II cover lists Jesse Decker, David Noonan, Chris Thomasson, James Jacobs and Robin D. Laws as the authors, so they're both wrong. ;)

Anyhoo, yes the "wrong" covers are usually just preliminary artwork. Especially in the case of the Spell Compendium shown above, as that one probably didn't have artwork completed when it was listed.

Thanks everyone. That's what I thought. I just wanted to make sure. I didn't think WotC was in the business of putting out the same product but with different covers (the way some record companies do with albums, like No Doubt's Rock Steady and My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade).

That's interesting...

I always assumed the reason that some of my books looked different from the version I've seen online was because there were just different covers printed for the books destined for the UK. It happens quite often, so I never really thought it was weird.

I did however, think how much better the 'UK' Spell Compendium cover was from the 'US' version.

I did however, think how much better the 'UK' Spell Compendium cover was from the 'US' version.Yeah, I prefer the actual Spell Compendium cover (the one with the "latch" graphic and horizontal title text). What I don't get is why they abandoned the "unique" look for the Compendium series ... the new Magic Item Compendium and the as-yet-unreleased Rules Compendium look just like practically every other supplement (a stylized hero figure emerging from a square box set against a solid-colored background). I like how TSR used to make sure the different series all had a uniform look (brown for players, blue for DMs, green for historical, etc). WotC has kind of done that, but here and there they fall down on the job.

Well, maybe the standard image-on-brown-background was going to be the standard Compendium layout, but then someone had the (awesome) idea to make the Spell Compendium look like a spell book.

I think that any book that mentions "book" in the title should be styled after a book. X Manual, X Handbook, Tome of X, X-nomicon, Libris X; they should all look like fancy books. Races of X, Complete X, Environment X, X Campaign Setting; they can all have the boring picture-on-background look.

What I want is consistency. Some of the 3.5 series are consistent with a uniform cover design:

I might, but knowing that the final product has a blue cover, I may not be seeing the blue in one of the DMG II images above. Both look too dark, with the smaller image I can make out as brown.

There must be something wrong with your monitor (or your eyes) then because on my screen, the one on the left is bright blue.

consistency.
<snip>

but when you look at these ones there is consistency:

oke, the colour in the middle one is a bit diffrent, but the overall layout is the same.

i wouldn't mind having the Libris Mortis given a new front cover which is the same as the above, but with the draconomicon it destroys the unique look of the book.

Fair enough ... but then you've got things like Races of Eberron, which matches the Races series rather than the Eberron series, while Races of Faerun matches the Forgotten Realms series.

You've also got the Tome of Battle being of the - shall we say - generic cover type, along with two of the Compendium books, Dragon Magic, the PHB2, the DMG2, and probably some others that I can't think of right now ...

what's also a bit of anuicance is that the title of FC I is smaller than the text underneath, while the other two are the otherway round.

"Tome of Magic" is big, while "Shadow, Pact and Truename Magic" is little, whereas "Tome of Battle" is little and "The Book of Nine Swords" is big. :P

Way back in the TSR days it was a regular thing for the preliminary cover to be part of the ad campaign. And then the printing schedule was months further ahead of what they are now. It is a common problem in the industry, as people tend to look for the artwork as much as the actual text on the cover. But, thats life.

what's also a bit of anuicance is that the title of FC I is smaller than the text underneath, while the other two are the otherway round.

What annoys me even more than that are the different fonts.

I really liked the old covers for Libris Mortis and Codex Anathema. They didn't look like tomes, just like The Draconomicon didn't, and Codex Anathema is a bazillion times cooler name than Lords of Madness.

Do some 3.5 d&d books have several covers?

. . . yes. And the reason for this is obvious.

While you can legally use your 3.5 Dragonomicon for reference purposes now, by 3.7 it will be illegal, and you will need to use your alternatively artwork'ed 3.6 at least for game purposes. The information within all editions will be unchanged, but still, you must purchase the newer version for it to be applicable . . . until Dragonomicon 3.8 comes is released, that is.

I do believe this is called WotC's 'Core Material Block Rotation' policy.
