| NecroticBanana04-06-08, 02:49 AM | I'm currently playing a dwarven cleric, and we just spent a long stint in my DM's "oriental" kingdoms were i picked up a snazzy suit of great armor, a title, and the deed to a jade mine. However i was inspired out of a scene in Disney's "Mulan" movie were mushu disguises himself as a messenger mounted on a panda bear and asked my DM if i could have one as a trained mount. Well he said "yes, not a problem." However i found out that a mount has to be one size larger than its intended rider. well it turns out panda's would be considered a med. creature...so would a dire panda, or a "war panda" be considered like, a black bear or maybe a grizzly? |
| Seeker9504-06-08, 08:13 AM | A dire panda would be large. But where in sam hill are they getting the idea that a panda is a medium creature? THose things are called gentle giants for a reason. As for stats, I would give them the general stats of a grizzly, with the combat stats of a koala, possum, or otherwise generally harmless creature. The dire panda would be a little more ferocious. It might try to sit on you. |
| Hellsbells04-06-08, 08:31 AM | Seeker just a reference. Packs of wild dogs have been killed and or driven off by just one or two pandas. They're gentle, not slugs. As for the game stats a dire/war panda would be large. Although I agree that a regular panda should technically be large already there definetly big enough to ride even if they may be a little small compared to horses. |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast04-06-08, 08:44 AM | There are dire bear stats in the MM, they'd probably work just as well for a dire panda. |
| pintslayer04-06-08, 10:24 AM | Anyone ever see that video where the panda reaches through the bars of its cage and grabs some young lady and starts working her over? She must have had some bamboo shoots in her pocket or something, because old Ling-Ling was clawing on her like Dom DeLuise at the All-You-Can-Eat Pasta bar. I can see it now...a dwarf in some crazy-looking Oriental armor comes riding into town on an oversized panda. The local hooligans and scalawags start poking fun at his lack of stature, his unorthodox armor and his cuddly looking mount. Next thing you know, they're all down at the healer's, getting their scalps sewn back on and having big chunks of unpolished jade pulled out of their bungholes. Sweet.:ayyyy!: |
| Naderion04-06-08, 11:23 AM | Wikipedia says Pandas grow up to 1,50m long and 100 kg heavy. Given that ponies and gnolls are still medium creatures, a large-sized panda would be huge compared to what is normal. Even a dire badger is stated as medium at up to 7 feet length and 500 pounds weight. |
| Hellsbells04-06-08, 11:55 AM | Nad you are correct in this case. |
| GodGoblin04-06-08, 03:33 PM | Couldnt you just add the dire template to a panda? I think its in savage spiecies |
| celestialkin04-06-08, 03:39 PM | Couldnt you just add the dire template to a panda? I think its in savage spiecies No, I believe that is the feral template. I have been wanting to know where the rules/templates are for making dire creatures for a while now. |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast04-06-08, 03:49 PM | There is the warbeast template in the MM2, designed to turn animals into war mounts. You'd still need stats for a Large panda, of course. |
| Fireclave04-06-08, 04:02 PM | No, I believe that is the feral template. I have been wanting to know where the rules/templates are for making dire creatures for a while now. There are no (official) rules for creating dire creatures, and dire is not a template. |
| Seeker9504-07-08, 08:33 AM | Wikipedia says Pandas grow up to 1,50m long and 100 kg heavy.Wow! I never imagined I would be able to drag a panda, much less bench press one. Ignore what I said above. I guess pandas aren't as big as a a common brown bear, much less a grizzly. |
| Orchomenos04-07-08, 09:49 AM | Wow! I never imagined I would be able to drag a panda, much less bench press one. Now we know why pandas are a threatened specie! :P |
| Sinfire Titan04-07-08, 10:36 AM | There is only one Panda that I am familiar with, and she is not a usable mount (http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown-Spade/4733/image/yuu.GIF). Now that I got that out of the way, unless you are Small, Pandas are not the right size to be a mount. A Belt of Enlarge (constant version) or a simple Permanencied Enlarge spell will do the trick though. |
| bhu04-07-08, 05:36 PM | I'd use black bear stats for a regular Panda. And I have a Dire Thingie template in my weekly monster thread if you decide not to go with Dire Bear stats. The templates a lil twitchy, but thats cause I havent gotten much feedback. |
| lekosis04-07-08, 05:38 PM | Pandas aren't really that big, honestly. They're heavy as all get out, but that's mostly big bones and lots of flesh. Call 'em 'dense'. In the physical sense, not the mental one, hur hur. I kinda want to use a panda as a bean bag chair. I think they'd work pretty well. Very squishy. The idea of a dire panda intrigues me and I wish to learn more. |
| nightwyrm04-07-08, 06:56 PM | lol, dire panda...look out, dire bamboo forest. |
| Drackthor04-07-08, 11:26 PM | Well that first off is a gr8 idea but givin the panda the stat of a grizly bear is a BAD idea, ive studied pandas 4 a long time, here are some suggestions -Very very large movement speed, riding one should be around two or three hundred feet per turn -Pandas (or Pandae if you wnt to get technical) have very sharp calws along wit very large musclez. 3 or 4d10s of dmg four each claw -Panda hav very sharp minds and hav been observed doing very basic thing like making tools and organizing theyr food and stuff, Panda need ats least 15 to 20 intelligence -I have personally studied Pandaz an they are known fo tough skin and natural fortitude, armur clas of atlest 30, 40 if past adult, bcuz the older a pandae gets, the craftier it becomes -sinc this id D&D lets add som magic 2 the mix shal we??? Give Panda(war) a breath weapon of half sonic half divine dmhg that ignore spell resistance and immunities, maybe 10d6 per age category of panda (little on the low side, mite need tweak) |
| NecroticBanana04-07-08, 11:33 PM | Nevermind..my dwarf got smoted |
| Drackthor04-07-08, 11:35 PM | Nevermind..my dwarf got smoted Hmph. Well, you spend a little time mocking e-experts with a fake post and the next thing you know the OP is done with the thread. HARRUMPH! |
