| rice83001-05-07, 10:51 PM | Ok, im at my job and dont have a DMG with me, but to me it seems that diseases arent realistic. Ive been watching the history channel about wars and how disease was one of the tops cause for casualties. There are no diseases that do this. nothing is like this, i want my characters that are going to be in a war settings to have to find out what to do about disease, please help. |
| Lokiyn01-05-07, 10:56 PM | its the same with poisons and drugs. Belledonna is fatal to a fully grown human if so much as a leaf is consumed. In dnd Belledonna deals 1d6 strength damage/1d6 You cannot die from str damage (normally) So at worst you are in bed for a day then your strangth raises to 1 and you begin to go about your business as usual. |
| rice83001-05-07, 11:03 PM | that displeases me ver much so; im going to be running a low-magic war setting and the PC's are going to end up being generals that have to care for their soldiers at all costs. |
| Lokiyn01-05-07, 11:05 PM | Just up the vectors. Have the Disease spread through proximity. have a % chance of spread based on the severity of the disease. Have it spread quicker than normal, and have the quick cure (other than time) be some rare herb of some sort |
| rice83001-05-07, 11:14 PM | Thats a good idead, but I just want some realistic diseases, somthing that could actually kill you. The PC's at low levels might get a disease from being in the pit of battle. |
| Lokiyn01-05-07, 11:18 PM | Oh in that case. add in the clause Any victim of a disease that has had the score that the disease damages instead takes 1d4 points of con damage per day. Rather than the standard damage, Ability score damage will not heal while Constitution is so being damaged So they get sick, Then they get immobile, then they die. |
| rice83001-05-07, 11:26 PM | Thank you, youve been great help Lokiyn. |
| darkdragonk01-05-07, 11:33 PM | Here try this: Black Plague (or name of your choice) The disease spreads to anyone whom comes in contact with an infected person. There is also a 65% chance of becoming infected by standing withen ten feet of an infected person for more than half an hour. Damage: 1d4 con damage everyday until cured or save is made (set the save high and increasing with every faliure, make cure something there is alot of, but only in a remote dagerous area.) Hope this helps :) |

The reason why diseases aren't realistic is because disease isn't fun in real life. the game is meant to be fun, not tedious, touch a doorknob and you die. |

It is true that disease dosn't fit well with the standard "romp through the dungeon, kill kill kill, grab the loot, go home selll, BTW we're saving the world" high fantasy D&D world. However, disease can add an interesting element. It, among other things, can add a gritty sence of danger and urgency to the game. And frankly if your constantly fighting enemies in filthy caves, your going to catch something. If you wanted to make disease more deadly I'd have it so that if an ability score gets to 0, or maby -5 (just track the negitives for this purpose) through disease, you die. Also the after each combat make a 5% chance that you contract gangreen (you'll need to make stats for it) if you have taken damage. Sterilizing the would with alcholhol negates this, but the wound must be availible to be sterilized (So no cure spells to close it up...). Sterilizing the wound after it has been cured would require a heal check (DC equal to the amount of damage healed). Also make some checks for filthy living conditions and bad food... |

Along with the fact that you also have to consider that PCs are heroes, they're far better than the average Commoner. If a powerful disease is made that affects powerful heroes like them and is easily transmitted, you're going to need a very good explanation for why it doesn't wipe out 70% of the population of your planet (the other 30% are the Clerics and Paladins with Remove Disease). |
