What does this mean exactly:

"DIsease: FIlth Fever - bite, Fortitude DC 11, incubation period 1d3 days, damage 1d3 Dex and 1d3 con. The save DC is constitution-based."

Why is there two mentions of DC's? And is that ability damage it does?

*confused*

When the save is constituion based it means that the sace DC is calulated based upon the Constitution of whatever it is giving the characters Filth Fever.

Anyway allow me to explain how disease works with Steve the Fighter!

Steve the Fighter comes incontact with diseased mater, in the case of Filth Fever something, like a dire rat, with it had to attack him lets just say that the rat hits him.

Steve IMMEDIATELY makes a fort save (some DMs prefer to make this roll in secret). Steve has a good Fort save but rolls poorly only getting a 10. Sadly he needed 11 to pass. Steve might wonder why he had to make a fort save, and if anything bad happened (which is why many DMs make the secret rolls). Simply inform him nothing feels wrong.

After this nothing happens for 1d3 days in game. (this should always be a secret roll by the DM... lets say the roll turns out to be 2. Two days after the fight (in game) Steve wakes up suffering from a horrible fever, he feels weak and is uncoordinated by the disease ravaging his body. Suffering 1d3 dex, and 1d3 con.

For giggles lets say he takes 1 point of dex damage and 3 points of con (reducing his hp). At some point durring this day he gets a saving throw, generally when he rests (so before bed or if he takes time off for a full bed rest). Sadly Steve rolls a 1 on his save and is still diseased.

Even though he failed his save resting for the night heals his ability damage slightly, giving him one point back in each ability. So he has no dex damage and -2 con. Unfortunatly for him he takes another 1d3 dex, and 1d3 con damage. This time however, when he beds down for the night he makes his save!

Thus the next day he suffers no damage (though it may take time for his ability damage to heal).

This has been an example.

Conversely if our friend Steve made his first save like Dwight the rogue did, he would have immediately fought off the fever and had no ill effects.

Nived, this is an excellent example of the interaction between DC strengths and save DC calculations. :tiphat:
