Well, first, the one friend that can't afford to buy books doesn't really need them - as long as one of you has a copy of the DMG and a copy of the PHB, that's all you really need. Not everybody needs their own copy of everything.

It's possible to play with just two people, but if both of them want to run characters in the game it's best to have the one who's not also DMing be the one to make most of the important decisions for the party. The thing you have to keep in mind when running a character in your own game is: What does the *character* know? Or, more specifically, what do *you* know that the character *doesn't*?

I have in the past run a party of my own characters through a module all on my own as sole player and DM, but it takes a fair amount mental dexterity to be able to keep each character within themselves. Playing out a session entirely by yourself is a lot more akin to writing a novel or short story in your head than playing D&D...

Through my high school years (1e and the start of 2e) I was in three groups. One had seven players plus a DM. One had four players plus a DM. And the third was me and my best friend. We alternated as DM. I had the same amount of fun in each. The type of fun varied. The former is what is important to you. The latter is what makes it memorable to me. :D

Two people? Play on.
