DM Guide/Move from 2E to 3.5 [Archive] - Wizards Community

My gaming group is looking at making a move from 2E up to 3.5. In doing so, I had a question about the DM Guide...a recent trip to Barnes & Noble found the DM Core Rulebook II, but not the original 3E book. Is it necessary to have both, or can I get away with just having the Core II??

10-01-05, 12:05 PM All of the 3e and 3.5 core rulebooks are marked as Core Rulebooks. The PHB is Core Rulebook I, the DMG as II, and the MM as III. The 3.5 books also say "v.3.5" on them. Also, I recommend shopping around on places like Amazon or eBay, you can get better deals than you will from B&N.

10-01-05, 12:24 PM What the previous poster is trying to say is that the 3.5 rules are entirely independant from the 3.0 rules. They are mostly compatible, but there are enough slight differences (made for game balance, 3.5 was released 3 years after 3.0) that you should stick with one version or the other. I'd recommend 3.5 as game material is still being published for it.

10-01-05, 12:47 PM The words "Core Rulebook II" refer the the DUngeon Master's Guide. The Player's Handbook is referred to as "Core Rulebook I" and the Monster Manual is labeled "Core Rulebook II". These are the three core rulebooks for D&D.
