| thatbamaguy02-21-05, 10:45 AM | OK i was just wondering if any of your dms make really stupid moves. This happend to me yesterday..... We were in a dungeon and our dm put us up against a displacer serpent. Every time we would do damage to it......he would make it flee so that we would chase it. But he made it run in the wrong direction and burnt up his snake in his own flame thrower trap. We laughed all day. |
| Seeker9502-21-05, 03:35 PM | Out-of-Game stupid moment: Back in 1982, playing AD&D for the first time, we thought that the Hit Die progression table meant that at 1st level you get 1dX, at 2nd level you get 2dX, t 3rd level you get 3dX, etc. Our 4th level characters had the hit points of a 10th level character. No wonder everything we fought was a cakewalk! |
| e-z0r02-21-05, 04:33 PM | Hahah. Last time we were playing our DM had taken an adventure off the Wizards' webpage. This is how it unfolded from the PLAYERS' view (I was a player, so). I've simplified it of course a bit because it would be too long to type here and too long to remember detailedly. Anyway, I'm an 8th lvl Bard and I'm walking into the BBEG's lair (I had done nothing to the BBEG and my character was very anti-heroical anyway, although good he was) and the rest of the party is still decending down to the bottom of the wall where we had dug a hole to enter the BBEG's lair. DM: "You see the witch-woman standing beside her cauldron on the far side of the room." Me: "Hello there! I'm not interrupting anything, am I?" Blah blah, general BBEG talk DM: "You see her starting to cast a spell." Me: "Can I roll for Spellcraft?" DM: "Yea, sure." Rollroll Me: "28" DM: "Okay, you decipher the spell she's casting as Summon Monster IX" - At this point I and my character was silently in my mind going "WTF?" in our minds, but thought "Hey, she's got no reason to be angry at me.." - The rest of the party came down the well and started to arrive in the lair. Next round the summoned Couatl attacked me for some small amount of damage and 5 STR damage - I failed my save - Next round 4d4 str damage which dropped me to 0 and generally made me as limp as a bundle of spaghetti. The other players tried attacking the couatl a bit, and the monk got reduced to 3 str. Our sorcerer got off a lightning bolt at it. The BBEG went invisible. So.. I don't exactly how the conversation went but nevertheless we mentioned that the sorceress would have to be 18th level to get off a summon monster IX. The DM goes "What?? It says right here "Sorcerer 9", I thought that means she can cast Summon Monster IX too!" And we all go "Riiight..." Our sorcerer's player comments "If she were a 19th level sorcerer she'd probably beat us with just a dagger" And then the NPCs from town arrive downstairs and the high-leveled paladin kills the couatl and the sorceress and casts restoration on everyone. |
| TheScalesOfFate02-21-05, 04:45 PM | Wait...the NPC Lawful Good Paladin killed the Couatl. As in, Couatl, rainbow-feathered servants of all that is good? That almost seems like the dumber moment to me... |
| Sulaco02-21-05, 04:57 PM | One DM was starting a new game. His surprise was that the PCs were going to be equipped with whatever they had on them when they showed up to the game. Weapons were going to be ananolgues of real items (many people carried pocket knives so these would be swords in the game for example). His mistake came in letting this slip to one player, whose house also happened to be where we were playing. So the night fo the game he has everyone empty their pockets to asses their equipment. The exact tally fails me but I believe John pulled out about 12 knives, 2 shortswords, 3 miniature toy bows, a toy flintlock pistol, a huge bag of coins, about 2 weeks worth dried army rations, and a 1 pound coffe can full of blackpowder! Silly DM. |

So what? He was attacked by the creature, he can attack back. Just cos they are of the same alignment does not mean they have "Do Not Kill" written on their foreheads. |
| Shatteredtower02-21-05, 07:46 PM | Just cos they are of the same alignment does not mean they have "Do Not Kill" written on their foreheads. Yeah, that tag isn't binding in most fantasy states anyway, unless you're employing a Mark of Cain standard. :P My biggest mistake twenty-four years ago was letting the 1st level PCs of friends invade the lairs of sleeping dragons, subdue them, use them to subdue more powerful sleeping dragons, and then use those dragons to kill other normally tough opponents -- with all xp going to the PCs. This was compounded by letting them gain the xp to rise several levels in a single encounter (1 gp = 1 xp treasure rewards back in 1st Ed didn't hurt either), until you'd have a 15th level fighter by the end of the first hour, and I hadn't properly read the section on hp, instead assuming that the +3 hp a fighter gained per level was in addiition to that 1d10 hp they'd been gaining for each level up to 9th. There was a lot of stuff like that over the first year or so, but you have to start somewhere. ;) |
