| Crazy75702-06-07, 01:25 PM | Do you ever feel like the Dm is solely around for the single perpous of makeing your life a liveing hell. I Do.... I play with my friend and he just happens to be the Dm 95% of the time, and no matter which of my charactes i use he always finds fun new ways of kicking me in the ribs, he will even make new monsters with totaly evil abilites just for me to die at the hands of. He even turned my other friend off of D&D just by playing one game with him, in fact it went alot like this, a summery of the first two tiles in our dungeons. Dm:You plummet down the shute, Rigarak lands on his tail and Jar lands on him. Rigarak:(ME)ohhh me head hurt now. Jar:Ok im going to look around the room, what do i see? Dm:Make a spot check... Jar rolls a 20 Jar:awesome! Dm:you fail... Rigarak:im going to open door on far side of room. Dm:Rigarak goest to open the door on the far side of the room Locked Jar:Im going to attack the door with my greataxe. Dm rolls Dm:ok the doors down Dm:you two stride into the dimly lit room, as soon as you are about half way in the midde a portcullis shuts behind you blocking you escape and a purple worm bursts from the ground, your only escape it the other door to the left of the room, roll fo initiative guys! Rigarak and Jar:Son of a B@#$%!!! Now the only question is how can i get rid of my dm unfortunate play traps without deleting our characters to make new ones or without goin to find a new dm because were we live the dm's are vast and hidden So anybody have any ideas? |
| Aktariel02-06-07, 01:28 PM | The question that this begs in my mind is, Is the DM just doing his job? Is he trying to present actualy challenges for you to overcome? Or does he take evil glee in killing off players, and seem to run his games for no other purpose than to do so? |
| Crazy75702-06-07, 01:32 PM | Trust me, my dm loves to use our charcters for only three things, tests for new monster he makes(often ending in death), torture of our players, and a very nasty habit of putting big creatures in starting arieas so we have no time to think. |
| CharlieRock02-06-07, 01:36 PM | Take up DMing yourself. You have a friend (besides the DM) who already knows how to play. .. ... Do it!!! :D P.S. And ,should the old DM become a player, resist the urge to stomp on his character. Revenge only works in board/wargames. ;) |
| Vacerious02-06-07, 01:38 PM | Do you ever feel like the Dm is solely around for the single perpous of makeing your life a liveing hell. Sounds like you have never played in Ravenloft, friend. Honestly, this doesn't sound like some of the monstrosities that I've heard on this board before. Depending on your party's level, you should be able to handle a purple worm. And even if you can't take it, if the point of the battle is to get through the next door, then that isn't that much of a challenge. ...Of course, that probably won't save you against its burrowing speed. Oh well. Point is, The DM's job is to make sure you are challenged and that everyone has fun. Honestly, if you're not having fun, discuss it with your DM. If this fails, go ahead and just find another group or learn to DM yourself and show him how it's done. Hope this helps. Vacerious |
| ZeronHitaro02-06-07, 02:00 PM | Jar:Ok im going to look around the room, what do i see? Dm:Make a spot check... Jar rolls a 20 Jar:awesome! Dm:you fail... That right there proves: A. The DM doesn't know what he's doing. And/Or B. The DM is a railroading addict. What should you do? Use the passive aggresive tactic of refusing to roll the dice. Why? With your DM's attitude what he wants to happen will happen regardless if you roll a 1 or a 20, so there's really no point to rolling. You're basically getting to sit and watch as the DM tells a story his way regardless of anyone's wishes. |
| GreyEagle02-06-07, 03:08 PM | the D&D community is filled with idiots who call themselves DMs and act like total $#!*heads when you give them the slightest amount of power. Sounds like you've got one. DMing is not just about throwing ridiculous challenges at your players, its about making sure they have fun. God, some people... I swear. I played under such a DM once, as a Wizard. I had two spells at 4th lvl, both 1st lvl spells. And he did the same sort of thing, anything you do, absolutely anything, will get you killed instantly. I dont care how you try and defend this behavior its just stupidity. |
| Leo02-06-07, 06:56 PM | There are players that claim that they can make characters able to take on any challenge. So it's just natural that there are DM's that push their players to the limits of survival. Anyway, what's the DC for seeing burrowed things? 40? Hmm, if there was just a way we could put said players and DM's togheter, it would make some very interesting games:P "Muahaha tremble at my druid!" ""The BBEG snaps his fingers and 100 balors appear. Then he quickens a mormikden's disjunction on you" "Wait, I have this spell that makes me win initiative! I teleport the hell out of there!" "Ok, the BBEG also has some teleports and wishes ready" The DM also has his right for fun and power. |
| Bluehero02-06-07, 08:39 PM | You can sacrifice your soul (or some free snacks)to the Dm!:evillaugh  Other than that he might be out to get you, but remeber that since he has to represent everything evil and bad in the game, he's probably just doing his job. (But if you keep having trouble bribes are always a good idea):) |
| Ramses III02-06-07, 08:59 PM | Try getting behind the screen yourself for a session or 2. Who knows, you might just like it more than playing. If you can't find a competent DM, you have to either deal with what you've got or try it yourself. Besides if you like it and your players enjoy your DMing style, you'll all end up with a better gaming experience. |
| arjomanes02-06-07, 09:28 PM | You have a few options in a situation like this. 1. Roll with it and try your best to enjoy it. It sounds like it could be an adversarial DM, or he could run a world where you don't always end up in appropriate CR challenges. You could either not spend much time on your character, since s/he will die soon anyways, or you could use this as a chance to create all kinds of interesting character combinations and treat the adventures as one-shots. Run away a lot. When in doubt, run away. Wear light armor, take a level of barbarian or monk for the running away abilities. 2. Look for other gaming groups. This page (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=347) has a listing of games looking for players. 3. Start up your own game. If you can't find a DM who has a play style similar to what you're looking for, start your own game. Read the PHB cover to cover and learn the rules so you don't make the same mistakes that annoy you (you'll still make mistakes, but learn from them). Then get some friends to play with you. You might find you enjoy DMing more than you thought. |
| Seeker9502-06-07, 10:07 PM | Do you ever feel like the Dm is solely around for the single purpose of making your life a living hell."The" DM? No. Your DM? Sounds like it. |
| Daydreamer02-06-07, 10:17 PM | Sometimes dms feel like pcs exist to make there life a hell. There is a theory on the boards that pcs should have complete autonomy with creating there characters, this is true, but to an extent. The best way to create a character, is to actually compromise a little bit. PIck a character that FITS with your dms style of campaign and is maybe a character he would like to play. (do this only if you can find such a character that is at least of some interest to you). The most effective way to powergame is, in ever case, to play a character the dm wishes he was playing. This all rests on the assumption that he doesnt much care for your type of pcs, ur dm could just be an asshat. Also it could be both, he doesnt like ur pcs, but you dont like his campaign stlye enough to play a character that fits it. In those cases try talking to ur group-him, get things out in the open and make a group decision. But if you can enjoy a character that fits his game, try a character that fits his game. |
| Tichondrus02-06-07, 10:39 PM | Awesome signature daydreamer *bows* - - On the DM issue, the question is "Why do you play with him?" I mean, for a start: Jar:Im going to attack the door with my greataxe. Awesome, Jar broke the door, when did Gigard (sp?) tell the DM taht he crossed teh door as well? If a DM decides for you waht your character does, he's not worth wasting your time on him. Seccond: What would you do as a DM? The main part is: if you could handle it as a DM and find it reasonable, then maybe you should reconsider it, your DM -might- be right. I'm the kind of person who could take the core rulebooks and kill a dragon with a level 1 character and rolling only botches (if we exaggerate a LOT), but as a DM I also know that a haracter like that would imbalance the game as much as humanly posible, so I decide to give the DM, the rest of the group and myself a nice time ignoring that and roleplaying. And last and more important: if the DM only sends you into dungeons to fight ight and more fight... welcome to munchkinland! What kind of "roleplaying" is that? If you want to try something different, make a challange for the DM. Basic example: DM: You are at town, a local noble comes to you and offers you 50000 GP if you go inside the loctroch tunnel and kill the demon wich lives there. You: We thank him for the offer but say taht we have no eage to do that. A nice DM would think something else, not to force you down there, but as an extra adventure. A crappy DM would force you inside there, in wich case, you could simply look for a way to ingore his forcing and/or smile to him, leave and look for another DM. |
| Raptorial02-06-07, 11:06 PM | As a DM, I can say that calling all of us bad isn't right at all. |
| Tichondrus02-06-07, 11:09 PM | As a DM, I can say that calling all of us bad isn't right at all. Let the guy go, he had just a really bad experience. I live in a really small shive as well (not even a town) and DMs here are scarce. Counting me (who hates to DM and does it only when no one else is willing to), there are 5 DMsin town. 2 of them are like the one he mentioned. 1 of them is always high. I'm playing with the last one. (edit: the last one as none of the above mentioned >.< ) So you take a guess, it was not his intention to insult anyone, he just lacks experience. |
| Daydreamer02-06-07, 11:15 PM | it does sound like ur dms a bit of a dink. How old are you guys, idk but typically when i hear stuff like this the group tends to be very young. Seriously confront him out of game and what is going is probably the best idea. AS is someone else dming maybe? or find a new group. but, there is 2 sides to every story, how does he feel about you guys. If he(that is ur dm) were to post here, what would he say. |
| High Octane02-07-07, 01:39 AM | There are 5 weapons to use a against a DM. Tactics(In Game), Diplomacy(Out of game), Hammerguns, Folding Chairs, And your Feet. The feet can be used for both ass kicking AND walking. |
| Arrowhen02-07-07, 09:25 AM | Don't think of it as "hate", think of it as "tough love". |
