| Mythrignoc11-07-06, 04:48 AM | Has anybody else noticed the serious lack of artistic skills in the drawings of all DND 3.5 books? Aside from the 3 core books and possibly the psionics handbook, most of the art that is ever drawn is VERY sub par. Example- http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/sand_gallery/87587.jpg Notice the head area, it's jagged and cookie-cut'n'paste styled, as if it came out of Microsoft Paint. The feet, you can't tell exactly if it's in the sand or if that's the actual shape of the feet. The breasts, even on a humanoid made up creature, are incredibly low for where they should normally be on a woman's body, the shadowing, look at it's right arm (Our left). Notice that there is a shadow on both sides of the arm, umm, that doesn't make sense. To have the proper lighting to make those shadows is pretty much impossible, and considering that this creature is prolly in the desert, you can really only expect one source of light, the sun. Not to mention, the watercolor style is very bland, It looks like something a first level art class high schooler would paint really. There are SEVERAL pieces like this throughout all the books, the most apparent ones are in the Eberron books, where you have those really cheesy cartoonish full page drawings. Is it really just me, or does anybody else kinda think the art of DND is going downhill? |
| CharlieRock11-07-06, 07:18 AM | I tend to go by the art of Dragon. It has high and low points. This issue's was pretty good. *shrugs* |
| Seeker9511-07-06, 09:32 AM | Has anybody else noticed the serious lack of artistic skills in the drawings of all DND 3.5 books? For every publication with illustration, there will be those who like it and those who do not. For every Reynolds fan, there is a Reynolds detractor. Artistic skill is a very subjective area to begin with. What I have noticed is that more people are applying their subjective impressions of some art in a book to the entire book, and some are applying their impressions of a single book to the entire game. |
| RobbyPants11-07-06, 10:08 AM | I like a lot of what Ron Spenser has done. I also like a lot of the stuff he did for MtG. |
| KnaveofClubs11-07-06, 11:00 AM | With every book that keeps coming out, people stop trying. Its too much wear on their wrists to fill the pages of about 2-3 books a month with quality art. Also, some of the good artists that wizards used to have no longer work for them. This is apparent when you compare the artwork from the 2ed books to the 3.0 books, to the 3.5 books. They lose or gain artists everyday. |
| Sarella Starshine11-07-06, 11:09 AM | *looks down* hrm...my boobs seem to be hanging right about where that chick's are. Not every girl is blessed with perky ones (especially those of us who are endowed but don't wear a bra) :P. Overall, I find the art in the D&D books to be good because they appeal to me. I could care less how technically accurate the pictures are, how well excuted the art is created. Plus there is that element of 'that's cool, I wish I can paint/draw as well as some of these people', especially considering that most 3rd or 4th graders can draw better than me :P. |
| Sulaco11-07-06, 11:45 AM | Is it really just me, or does anybody else kinda think the art of DND is going downhill? It's not just you, there are many others who are also equally wrong about this. Wayne Reynolds alone raises the bar higher than in any previous edition. The breasts, even on a humanoid made up creature, are incredibly low for where they should normally be on a woman's body, Only if your definition of "normal human body" come from porn. Real boobs, at least those bigger than an A cup, sag. It's called gravity. There is nothing wrong with that. Oh, and humanoid =/= human. There is no reason at all that any non-human creature must adhere to human body ratios in any way. Humanoid simply means "roughly human in shape." |
| serow_#R11-07-06, 11:51 AM | Wayne Reynolds draws the MOST awesome D&D pictures, he's the ONLY artist whose art i look forward to! |
| CharlieRock11-07-06, 11:58 AM | Only if your definition of "normal human body" come from porn. Real boobs, at least those bigger than an A cup, sag. It's called gravity. There is nothing wrong with that. There isn't a whole lot right about it either. I'm voting against gravity on Nov. 7th. ;) |

| Tequila_Sunrise11-07-06, 04:35 PM | What did Wayne Reynolds paint? I myself miss Toni DeTerlixxi so much, sometimes I cry myself to sleep because he doesn't paint for 3.x... |
| Caver45111-07-06, 04:53 PM | *looks down* hrm...my boobs seem to be hanging right about where that chick's are. Not every girl is blessed with perky ones (especially those of us who are endowed but don't wear a bra) :P. TMI! ;) I'm more concerned picturing poor Mythrignoc with a ruler and protractor saying to himself "Hrmmpph! A half-millimeter too far to the left, and 2.4 degrees from true! The foooools! Foooooooools!" Actually like that drawing style, with harsh lines and simple colors. Guess I like bad art... -Caver |
| OamuTheMonk11-07-06, 06:13 PM | Wayne is the problem. Not the incredible Wayne Reynolds--the hacky, untalented Wayne England. Art that is not only hacky, but all looks the same. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/mmiii_gallery/82991.jpg http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/mmiii_gallery/83012.jpg http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/hoh_gallery/91991.jpg http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/hoh_gallery/91993.jpg Class after class, of ugly, ugly children. |
| Frida11-07-06, 06:26 PM | The thing is that good art takes time to make. For most artists anyway. If you as a publisher or art directer has a deadline to make, you are going to choose the mediocre artist who works fast and is reliable over the fantastic artist who works slower. I dont think that the art has been getting worse though, D&D has always had its share of amazing artists and their really crappy counterparts. |
| a_psh11-07-06, 06:50 PM | Wayne Reynolds alone raises the bar higher than in any previous edition.Wayne Reynolds draws cool scenes. As far as commercial artists go, Wayne Reynolds does not actually draw that well. Given that you're buying a friggin' fantasy roleplaying game, it's good enough. There were some of the older artists (I speak of covers, not interior stuff) that were vastly better at actually painting things. Art good enough that there were a few D&D artbooks made. It's just that they squandered most of their talents on lovingly-detailed women in chainmail bikinis. As nice as the 3e art is in the books, it'd make terrible stand-alone art. A lot of it is kinda hard-edged and tacky. But, meh, it's not supposed to be stand-alone art, so that can be forgiven. |
| Ashok_Lal11-07-06, 06:56 PM | Damn. I like my monsters pretty with bows in there hair. |
| Elrond_Hubbard11-07-06, 07:05 PM | I'm beginning to think that some people exist only to nitpick and grouse about WotC products. Seriously, people. Listening to some of you talk about these artists as "hacky" (?) and "untalented" is priceless — and I'm willing to bet asking you to do better would result in something that truly showcases the word "untalented." It's your opinion and you're welcomed to it, but some of the grousing that goes on on these boards is borderline pathetic. |
| a_psh11-07-06, 07:49 PM | I'm willing to bet asking you to do better would result in something that truly showcases the word "untalented." Dude, that's the point of criticism. You can have an aesthetic sense of something without actually being able to produce it. That's why people talk about their taste in books, films, movies, &c. Because you can say that the overall effect was poor or wrong even if you can't replicate every note or scene or brushstroke perfectly yourself. |
| BoneLord_of_Skullthrone11-07-06, 09:20 PM | Wayne is the problem. Not the incredible Wayne Reynolds--the hacky, untalented Wayne England. Art that is not only hacky, but all looks the same. ... Class after class, of ugly, ugly children. I dissagree. They only look similar because he has a particular style. And only one has tentacles, only one has giant goblin ears, and only one has four arms. Though the Geriviar (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/mmiii_gallery/82991.jpg) and Skindancer (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/mmiii_gallery/83012.jpg) do look so similar that I have mistaken the Skindancer for the Gerivier once before. And I must reitterate the point that these published artists are probably more talented thatn anyone in this thread (that's why they're published). |
| a_psh11-07-06, 09:31 PM | And I must reitterate the point that these published artists are probably more talented thatn anyone in this thread (that's why they're published).See above re: criticism and talent. George Lucas is a more talented director than you. Does that mean you are completely incapable of judging whether or not Episode 1 was a piece of crap? |
| merric10111-07-06, 11:04 PM | i for one actually thought that peace of art was really good and i wish i could draw that good, especially on the computer because I'm not to good on that. |
| Siberys11-08-06, 12:23 AM | I absolutely LOVE Steve Prescott's art. And Wayne Reynolds aint shabby, either. I just realized something. My Eberron books have my favorite art in them... go figure :D Also, on the point of the comic-book style art of the eberron chapter pages - that was intentional. Many Pulp comics in the past have had mildly similar art in them. Since Eberron had Pulp elements, I thought it was a cool addition. Also, on Wayne England. His art isn't bad, but it's all identical. more examples - http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/xph_gallery/80495.jpg http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/mmiii_gallery/82991.jpg very little difference, no? there's more, but just too much to compare at this particular time. And on a final not, I LOATHE Thomas Baxa's art - look at how small this Elf's hands are! http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/cd_gallery/81356.jpg Now, this is admitably only one example, but others exist. About the only pictures I like of his are the Ur-Priest and the Dracolich & Tiamat for WotDQ. anyway, cheers, Siberys |

| Ashheart11-08-06, 07:24 AM | You know I tend to agree with the statment that the arts going down, but I must also stress that there is a point to "art". And that is that everyone gets a opinion. Mabey that piece of s*** art in complete (add name of character type) you hate is the absolute best according to someone else. Personaly, I like Brom, it just a shame he doesn't do as much for Wizards as he used to. http://www3.telus.net/public/mehwulfe/art/brom/Cattie-brie.jpg |
| babysamurai11-08-06, 07:30 AM | Wayne Reynolds alone raises the bar higher than in any previous edition. Absolutely. I just wish they’d bring back Brom, and get rid of that horrendous Baxa hack. |
| babysamurai11-08-06, 07:36 AM | George Lucas is a more talented director than you. Actually, I think it’s widely accepted that George Lucas is a terrible director and treats actors like props. He can manage to get a good actor and make their performance completely wooden. That’s why Empire was so good – he didn’t direct it. Thank god they got Spielberg to direct Raiders. He is a great producer/effects co-ordinator/editor, though. |
| Licínio Miranda11-08-06, 08:27 AM | rpg artwork, old style (http://www.cruisegazing.com/RPG_Motivational/rpgartwork.jpg):D Owww.. I miss thoses... :D There are some good artworks in Wizards´s books and others not that much, I think I draw better than some of these guys, but I´m horribly in coloring. What I don´t like it to see Tordek, Mialee and Regdar in almost every drawing. Wizards must understand once and for all that the Iconics SUCKS (I don´t like this word, but I´ve notices you americans love it). :) |

| Seeker9511-08-06, 09:13 AM | I just wish they’d bring back Brom, and get rid of that horrendous Baxa hack.By the time anyone actually knows the name of a D&D artist (outside the world of D&D), the artist is too expensive for us to have. |
| CharlieRock11-08-06, 09:15 AM | :heehee |
| babysamurai11-08-06, 09:41 AM | By the time anyone actually knows the name of a D&D artist (outside the world of D&D), the artist is too expensive for us to have. Very true – they become "sought" after. …And they're sick of doing the struggling artist thing (eating ramen, the whole bit). |
| a_psh11-08-06, 11:44 AM | Actually, I think it’s widely accepted that George Lucas is a terrible director and treats actors like props. And yet he's still a better director than someone with absolutely no training or experience. So that means we shouldn't criticize him, right? (sarcasm) |
| babysamurai11-08-06, 11:47 AM | And yet he's still a better director than someone with absolutely no training or experience. …That’s not saying much. |

| Jhaelen11-10-06, 08:43 AM | The art in D&D supplements is generally extremely good. Just compare it to the material from third parties or for other RPG systems. You won't find many that have such a consistently good quality. I think most D&D players who complain have simply been spoiled by the overabundance of great art... |
| zvbxrpl11-11-06, 01:40 PM | Eh, Baxa's OK, but he's best doing freaky demons, abberations, and undead as opposed to humanoids. Just check out his Hook Horror in the MMII and his demons in the FF. |
