I'm not quite sure how to describe it, what do you see DnD as, just a game or somthing more?

Let's see...

It's a game, a shelf load of novels, a box o' minis, and two crappy movies.

So not just a game ;)

It's a franchise. There's the game I play, the novels other people read, the game using small plastic figures based on the game, and the two movies, both of which I enjoyed, but would not buy or watch again. So, yes.

so which one of the 3 movies did you like?

and D&D tastes like the color purple.

D&D is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

(huh, what? It's not? Oh, well...)

I'm sorry, that should be "Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma."

As for D&D, it is just a game, last I checked. A very nice game, but a game. Lessee...rulebook? check. Dice? Check. Playing pieces? Check, though your mileage may vary. All the hallmarks of a game there.

People who look for a deeper meaning in games are likely to be disappointed, unless they somehow have the Dailai Lama as their DM.

I was thinking more along the lines of cult status, for eample, i would never compare the DnD game to say, guess who, guess who is clearly a game, where as DnD....

That would be awsome.

Never had the Dalai Lama DM, but I ran a game for him and Jesus once. DL wanted to play a VoP monk, but I was like

BORING! Dude, it's role-playing. Try something new.

So he ended up with a half-dragon, half-drow Barb/Warblade/Frenzied Berzerker with Wisdom as his dump stat.

And Jesus was all excited about the Paladin, 'til he read the code of conduct. He was like, "WTF? This guy's a total prude. No one can be that good." So he played a cleric of Erythnul who raised all the FB's victims as an undead army.

It was cool for like two sessions, but I had to bail 'cuz they totally wouldn't follow the intricate storyline I'd worked out in advance. I mean, they were supposed to be killed by the half-celestial Elder Titan. For the plot. You'd think these guys wouldn't be so skittish about Resurrection or Reincarnate via DM fiat...

Im hoping you mean "cult status" as in a very in depth and popular thing. If not, I will choose to ignore the other meaning of that phrase as it gives players a bad name.

Actually, DnD is loaded with metaphysical nuances, especially Planescape. But to MOST people I would say it is just a game.

...and possibly a great topic of social dynamics and team building.

It is a game, but it is also a hobby.

Candyland, for instance, is just a game. D&D is a game, and also a hobby.

Full of awesome and made of win, this is.

Oh, and D&D is just a game. It's also a hobby, and something (along with quite a few other RPGs) that occupies a good deal of my time.

D&D is as much a game as Clue, Guess Who?, or any other game. It still has a franchise based off of it, but then, so does Harry Potter. It has no cult status, unless you mean the sheer number of folks who play, read the books, or watch the movies. There are no religions based off of it, and no-one who reads into as more than a game is not mature enough to be playing. It is not a life-style, it is not an experience, any more than a Star Wars movie is an experience. LARPing could be called an experience, but then, so is any camping trip, or Rennaisance Faire, or religious retreat.

Wait, no, I read in a pamphlet somewhere that is IS more than a game. Yeah, this really smart guy (so what if he never actually played it?) shows how it isn't just an innocent game, there's more to it than that...
Oh wait, nope, I guess it is just a game. And he was an idiot.
Seriously dude, you've got to be kidding.

What's up with all the defensive "it is SO just a game!" responses? Seems like they're trying to be contradictory for contradiction's sake.

To me, D&D is a chance for fantasy and adventure in a way that goes more in depth than a movie or a novel. It's a core part of my social life. It's a creative outlet that allows me to make up what I want in an environment where it'll be appreciated. It's an opportunity to see the world from different points of view than my own.
Jake_D

08-06-07, 11:10 PM
I didn't catch any defensiveness, just a bunch of people saying they thought it was just a game. If "Hobby" makes you happier, fine, it's a hobby. Some people are way into football, and guess what, that's just a game too. Some people eat, sleep, and dream video games, and that's their hobby too, but they're still just games.
I think the OP needs to clarify the "something more" part.
It might be your idea of the perfect game, and you might love it so much, and of course it has creative thinking benefits, but if it becomes a lifestyle or something that defines you as a person... well, I guess at least you're having fun...
And since when does disagreeing with something that you think is wrong make you "contradictory for contradiction's sake"?

It's not just a game; it's an AWESOME game! :D
Especially for its replay value. I mean, how many games can you really consistantly play for years on end and still have so much fun doing new stuff?
I also enjoy its versatility as a game. I mean, everybody plays with the same rules, and yet NOBODY plays the same as anybody else. You just can't get that in most games.
The social aspect is also something you can't find in other games. You don't just play D&D with somebody for one night, after all. It usually lasts a while, and you get to know people.
So again, no, it's not just a game; it's an AWESOME game! :D

(yes, it's just a game )

It's a game. As many previous posters have stated, it is one hell of a fun game, but a game nonetheless.
You could argue that it is also a focal point socially, by bringing together several like minded people once a week or so, but then again, so does weekly poker night, Monday Night Football, and your parents Bridge night, all of which are also....games.
There is nothing wrong with admitting the gameness of DnD. But trying to expand its essential gameness into something more falls short.

Not... A game. For me it is more (If you would say that it's just a game) For me it is about roleplay. To live myself into the dwarf fighter, who dreams of starting a pub and be the bartender, and a lovely women, but can't since his home country is under attack from Dark Tyranus, and he wants to return and revenge this madness......................
..
.....
........
..........WHOAW:D

sometimes it is just so..something..:), to be another than yourself. A second life! YEAH BABY:)!.....uhm...

It's a great social game, the perfect excuse to get you're friends over and have fun, tell jokes and grab a drink

it's exactly what games are supposed to be: a way to get people together and have fun, do some bonding, whatever

all the more reason to enjoy our favorite past time...

Wow, this post could go on until the end of time.... and people would still be posting "Yeah, it's awesome, but it's just a game!" I think we have the answer... But if you want to restate everyone else in your own words, don't let me stop you!

D&D is an excuse to get together with friends.

 so is going to bars and geting drunk, getting high on recreational drugs, etc.

but wait D&D isn't an excuse to get to gether with friends because you should play D&D to play D&D not just to gather with friends.

see several other threads about this where 50% of the groups thought this way while others were there to play the game rather than just socialize and what it did to there groups and their friendships.

don't do something jsut because everyone else is doing it. "above the influence" should extend beyond the drug related issues and go with other things just as well.

Yeah, I'll admit that I'm one of those guys. But I didn't have a life before D&D. I'd shift from one geeky hobby to another, trying to find something to fill the void where my life should be. Every time I gave up on getting a life because I just couldn't manage it. . . . yeah, I'm gonna . . . try again to get a life.

D&D is my anti-drug.

Kidding. Common sense and a vibrant imagination are my anti-drug. But D&D is a major part of my life. I can't play much (about five times a year if I'm lucky) so I spend a lot of time fleshing out my homebrew worlds, making monsters, and otherwise preparing.

D&D is something to look forward to. When I roll the dice (even if I am horribly unlucky) I slip into the persona of my fireloving Felinian sorcerer. I revel in the burst of a Fireball, or the arc of a Lightning Bolt, or even the simple joy of rolling for how long that girl I met in the bar and I spend making a night of it (my DM has made an ingenious system involving Ride checks) I am a part of the game. I require no robes, no staves, no real-world material components-I merely slip into the body of Argul Fraster, "master" sorcerer (of 6th level), Favored of his god, and have fun.

I have no conventional "life"-what most people consider a life is either dangerous or non-existent up here. I don't work on cars, I don't drink, I don't smoke, and I'm a virgin. I am a major uniqueness where I live. Personally, I have no interest in what most people call a "life" due to the dangers inherent in it. I can imagine the same thing so richly that it might as well be me doing it.

Rave? Please. The simple pleasure of listening to a Bard in whichever tavern we are staying the night will do. Drugs? My stoner wizard/druid bud can provide side-effect-less entertainment with all the hallucinations I could ever want. Fighting? Who wants to use fists when you have Bigby's Hand? Granted, others may argue, but I'm happy with my lot. I do as I please and I don't get hurt.

Nerd? No. Geek? Yes, and proud of it. D&D is a sufficiently major part of my life to keep me safe and sane.

If it's the first, then yes, D&D is just a game. While I might love this game, that's ultimately what it is.
