02-22-08, 11:44 PM Nice dnd question on Jeopardy tonight. (I don't think it was a rerun.)

Something like "Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson invented this roll playing game in the 1970s." Of course, it was in the "Nerds" category, but it had decent company... Al Gore and Gordon Brown were there too.

The girl got the question.

02-22-08, 11:53 PM Too bad Al Gore was in there, he's more of a dork than a nerd...nerd refers to intelligence and the pursuit of intellectual interests... lying about creating the internet and caring about the environment doesn't count as being intellectual, he's one of the biggest flakes and party changers politics has seen in quite some time.

I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."[145] This statement was often misquoted by media outlets and led to the creation of a widely spread urban legend that Gore claimed to have "invented the Internet."

Ya know, not wanting to flame or anything...but I think the phrase "Full of ****" was also started by him too... the internet was around in the 40's???? How old was Al then??? Guess he didn't invent it afterall, nor had anything to do with it's development...unless he he did it while he was into negative's...

I also had internet in 1995 which preceded his BS statement, as far as that goes...so anyone who wishes to push Mr. Gore's crap about the internet...read further than Wiki...

Times are changing. It's not as obscure anymore as rock'n'roll was to the grandparents generation in the '60s.

The Internet developed out of a project from an obscure US Government organization called ARPA - the Advanced Research Projects Agency within the Defense Department. ARPA was formed in 1958 in direct response to the launch of Sputnik to ensure/regain an American lead in technology. As I understand it, the general intent of the project (originally dubbed ARPANET) was an exploration of means of maintaining communication between computers over a wide area when many intervening areas of phone communication were destroyed.

The first two computers of ARPANET were connected in - 1969.
ARPA renamed DARPA (DEFENSE advanced research projects agency) in - 1972.
Use of the term "Internet" came into use to describe any computer networks using TCP/IP protocols, including ARPANET and its associated networks in - 1972.
Coordination and management of the Internet was transferred to IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority] in - 1972.
However, DDN-NIC (Defense Data Network—Network Information Center) still handled domains and registration. Control of DDN-NIC was subcontracted by the Defense Department to Network Solutions, Inc. in - 1991.
TCP/IP protocols were established over all of ARPANET in - 1983.
It was opened up to commercial interests in - 1988.
The World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in - 1989
CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) publicizes the WWW project in - 1990-91
The Internet came to incorporate many different computer networks since the early '70's and throughout the '90's as the TCP/IP protocol spread. The Internet was now largely NON-military. Registration duties were transferred from the Defense department to the National Science Foundation-created company InterNIC, which subcontracted the registration and address managment in - 1991.
IANA and InterNIC were reorganized under the non-profit ICANN in - 1998.
Al Gore HAS been involved in computing issues and the Internet since first being elected to congress in the late 70's but statements he made along the lines of: "In Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet," are at best self-serving exaggerations, and at worst delusional. He may have ASSISTED in it's development insofar as congress had minimal direct influence on it (and if anything congress should be praised for being largely too myopic to see it's importance - which Gore at least may have done - and left it ALONE, or steadily moved it OUT of government control.)
