DnD Online-Paper and Pencil Style [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-15-06, 11:52 AM Is there any place on the web where people play DnD online(not to be confused with the video games such as Neverwinter and DnD Online). I guess I am wondering if people play using chat programs or something of the like?

Anyone know?

07-15-06, 12:10 PM Well I am about to take the plunge with a few friends using Fantasy Grounds. We should be kicking off with our first session later this week. We will also be using Team Speak to help move things along at a more standard PnP pace. If you are interested in virtual tabletops I suggest you take a look at this software. I am sure there are lots of similar ones out there but this one seems to fit the bill quite well for us. Good luck in your search and let me know if you end up getting a copy and are looking for a group :)

That looks like a great program. My problem is that I am an utter DnD newb(I've read through Dungeon Master's Guide and Player's Handbook though) and I doubt people would want to play online with someone holding things up with a lot of questions. Do you know if any novice users might use such a program...or only hardcore vets?

Today is the one year anniversary of our group's longest running campaign. It is all online, using openrpg (http://openrpg.com) (an other virtual tabletop application - but free and multiplatform, not windoze only.)

When we started I was completely new to D&D. So this is really just saying that no, you're wrong. If you find the right group to play with. Being new is not a great hurdle really it's no hurdle at all. From all that I've seen from the online games, not only the ones in our group, there is great acceptance of new players and willingness to teach you the game.

07-15-06, 01:26 PM The most well know is openrpg, which is a very good program (sometimes buggy/crashy) and has a lot of users but a less than desirable community.

There is also webrpg, a simpler program based on slow, slow javacode, which has a good community except very few people use it.

One warning: if you are playing online, you are very lucky to have a campaign that lasts a dozen sessions

07-15-06, 01:32 PM Geekling is absolutely right and considering that you have already read those two books you should be well ahead of your average D&D noob :) Personally I am happy just to get my first time players to read through the combat chapter in the PHB. Furthermore if online PnP wannabe gaming is something that you are completely new to, Openrpg would be a smarter choice to start with because it’s free and fancy and all that.
