| Subtle Knife08-14-07, 10:30 AM | A couple of interesting questions have arose during our previous gaming sessions, and I thought I'd ask the opinions of other DMs! 1) Can an Artificer use his Weapon Augmentation and Armor Enhancement infusions to imbue armor with the magical abilities of "specific" forms of armor (ie Hawkfeather Armor, Demon Armor) and Weapons (Assassin's Dagger, Frost Brand), if the value is within the limits presented by the infusion and the limits provided by the weapon or armor? This wouldn't include transmuting the natural form of the weapon or armor (no adamantine daggers, for instance - these are covered by another infusion), but would provide any magical modifiers and abilities provided. 2) Can an artificer use these infusions to imbue multiple modifiers to a weapon or suit of armor, if the sum value of these modifiers is less than or equal to the total available; for instance, using one iteration of Armor Enhancement to imbue Shadow, Silent Moves and a +1 modifier (sum +3 modifier) to a suit of armor? 3) Can one item be the recipient of multiple iterations of the same or similar infusions? If so, do you cap the total modifiers that can be imbued into an item? Do you include previously-existing magical modifiers inherent to the item? 4) When using an item with continuous effects, when/how often do you require UMD checks? Example - an Artificer wishes to use a Pendant of Mystic Warning (SCoT 170), which produces a continuous detect magic effect, but can only be used by arcane spell casters. How would you handle the requisite UMD check(s) to use this object? SK |

Check the actual spell entry for the infusion. "The armor or shield you touch temporarily gains a special ability commonly found on magic armor or shields" and "The weapon you touch temporarily gains a special ability commonly found on magical weapons." Emphasis mine. "Commonly Found" and "Unique" don't mix.2) Can an artificer use these infusions to imbue multiple modifiers to a weapon or suit of armor, if the sum value of these modifiers is less than or equal to the total available; for instance, using one iteration of Armor Enhancement to imbue Shadow, Silent Moves and a +1 modifier (sum +3 modifier) to a suit of armor? You can use multiple infusions of Lesser Armor Enchantment to give the same suit of armor multiple +1 abilities, but you cannot use a Greater Armor Enchantment to give you +5 worth of lesser abilities. Each casting grants you *ONE* ability. 3) Can one item be the recipient of multiple iterations of the same or similar infusions? If so, do you cap the total modifiers that can be imbued into an item? Do you include previously-existing magical modifiers inherent to the item? That would follow the same rules as crafting a magical weapon. Do you allow someone to make a +1 Flaming Flaming Flaming weapon in order to get +3d6? Standard ruling though is that like bonuses from the same source do not stack. So no, you couldn't put multiple copies of the same ability on a single weapon/armor/shield. As per the UMD rules in the PHB (page 85), when using UMD to emulate a class feature or alignment or whatever else for an ongoing effect, you make checks once per hour. |
