Ok, the gatekeepers are convinced that the Medusas are actually creations of the Daelkyr, more specifically made by Orlassk the master of stone, who also created basilisks and other petrifying creatures.

However, Medusas aren't Aberrations, but Monstrous Humanoids. And they claim to revere the Shadow. This got me thinking...

...What if the creatures Eberron knows as Medusas aren't the original Daelkyr creation, but watered down halfbreds?

What if the True Medusas dwelt in Khyber, and were actually more powerful creatures with the Aberration type, and/or the Pseudonatural template?

Now there's an interesting idea. I might try statting up a True Medusa. Let's see . . . I'd give it sorcerous casting like dragons have. A few spell-like abilities: charm person, charm monster, hold person, hold monster, stone to flesh (just in case it's needed). Maybe gorgon's stony breath (from a Living Spells article, AoE spell that acts as slow, then flesh to stone). Seems good.

Not to be a grammar nazi or anything, but the plural of "medusa" is "medusae." That aside, I like this.

Keep in mind, too, that aberrations and daelkyr creations aren't synonymous. Some aberrations, like aboleths, were children of Khyber who've existed on Eberron as long as the rajahs. Some daelkyr minions, such as the basilisk, aren't aberrations since they still have the same physical anatomy as most creatures found on Eberron.

The way I figure, if it came from Xoriat it's either an outsider or an aberration, but if it was originally a creature native to Eberron before a daelkyr got its twisted hands on it, it may yet be close enough to what it was to not be an aberration.

That said, thinking that there is something more frightening than the medusa is awesome. Maybe a mass of thrashing snakes in the vague shape of a humanoid figure.
