| Warforged Goblin07-05-07, 02:29 PM | Ok, I realize that this has been discussed in other forums, but I felt that I'd get a better response from non-rabid canon fanboys. I'm thinking of putting an artifact in my game very similiar to a Green Lantern ring. From the Age of Giants and the Second Age of the Quori, the Bracer of Il-Yannah (or some name similiar) would work as an intelligent magic item that holds a reserve of 500 power points per day and has (at least) fly, energy missile, wall of force, and astral construct. Any suggestions to help me smooth out the finer points of this artifact? |
| Amaril07-05-07, 05:37 PM | Why a bracer and not a ring? I would add any power that deals with creating something with ectoplasm such as wall of ectoplasm or ectoplasmic cocoon. Maybe psionic teleport and psionic dimension door, too. Any energy powers force would be useful, too. |
| Edymnion07-05-07, 05:47 PM | Psionic versions of the various Bigby hand spells would be a must. |
| Loki565407-05-07, 06:39 PM | Why a bracer and not a ring? Trademark issues, I'd assume. DC's lawyers are relentless. :D |
| Warforged Goblin07-06-07, 08:33 AM | Indeed Loki, I want something similiar to GL's ring, not a carbon copy. The more I think about it, the more I want to make it a legacy item. Start off with little piddly powers at first (swift fly, energy missile, force screen, summon astral construct I, Bigby's tripping/interposing/slapping hand, etc) and have the PC work his way up to the bigger stuff. The teleport and dim door, in my opinion, don't really fit the GL scheme. The main thing I'm stuck on is how many power points to give him per day. Oh, and there will be a battery of some sort later on, as soon as I figure out how to incorporate it without it being too cheesy. |
| Belkar07-06-07, 09:32 AM | Hmm... that's tough, WG. 500 Power Points is a lot per day. I guess it depends on how huge of an artifact you want it to be. If you're going to make it a legacy item, though, then it's easy. Start it off with a few dozen pp a day, then work it up as the powers increase. As the DM, you can then see what the usage capacity is... and what it should ultimately be at. Figure it as you go... ;) With an item like this, though... soooooo many powers could be used to replicate Green Lantern's stuff... Aside from the energy walls and blasts, I think astral construct is a GREAT idea, as is psionic flight. I don't know of any psi powers that replicate bigby's stuff. Ectoplasmic cocoon is also good... but so is ectoplasmic armor. One suggestion, though... when using the energy powers (wall, blast, whatever...), make them all force effects. More fitting, I think. |
| Amaril07-06-07, 09:33 AM | GLs use teleport all the time when travelling from sector to sector. They also tend to move through walls, too. |
| Warforged Goblin07-06-07, 11:14 AM | Really? Maybe I'm thinking more old-skool Hal instead of the newer stuff... |
| Amaril07-06-07, 11:28 AM | Really? Maybe I'm thinking more old-skool Hal instead of the newer stuff... Read Emerald Dawn. |
| Nived07-06-07, 11:55 AM | GL rings do whatever the plot demands... their power vary wildly, especially in the silver age (Hal could phase through walls, wipe people's memories, form wormholes in space for eazy stellar travel) But for the more 'classic' stuff Take a ring of the ram, give it the flight spell. Shield and the Bigby's Hand spells. Artifact level obviously... |
| DarkWarriorKarg07-06-07, 02:10 PM | Base it off the various crowns... |
| ArcTan07-14-07, 02:34 AM | Technically, the bracer wouldn't have any power points. The bracer would function as a cognizance crystal, and be keyed to the Silver Flame and have to be recharged by it every so often. (Oh, and of course it's secretly being tainted by the rakshasa rajah who lives in the Silver Flame, who is an "purple spirit of fear" and causes the bracer to treat all purple objects as having null-psionic fields.) |
| Weo07-15-07, 10:03 PM | yah you would definitely have to have the color weakness in there, otherwise the flavor wouldn't be the same. If I was your player, I'd be like "actually, DM, that's not yellow, its a burnt umber with dandelion highlights...and so my ring should still work...." |
| Warforged Goblin07-16-07, 07:36 AM | I hadn't even considered the color vulnerability, nice addition. I think instead of the "can't affect certain colored items", I'll have it so that certain color weapons or effects bypass the AC bonuses granted by the bracer. Nothing worse than your inertial armor and force screen proving to be completely ineffective against an Inspired's dull purple mind blade... :D |
| Arz07-16-07, 12:38 PM | Based on your limited back-story the item probably influences the wielder to hurry up the next incarnation of the Dream of the Age. If the character ever accomplishes such a suicidal task he and the ring would be irrevocably destroyed/changed. |
| Warforged Goblin07-16-07, 02:40 PM | Nah, the bracer is a relic from the age of the Dreaming Heart. It survived the shift before, it will survive another. Essentially, it's an intelligent item with a trapped renegade quori spirit providing the powers and dialog. "His" dedicated mission is to protect the weak and innocent and defeat the Dreaming Dark. |
| Lancer201007-16-07, 03:00 PM | Oh for the love of whatever deity you chose... I love these forums! This is actually really good too. I like how this is easily straddling the line between comic fan geekery and still usable artifact for a campaign. |
| TheKeyofE08-02-07, 03:52 AM | Warforged Goblin, I want you to know that you've inspired me. Building a character for my next campaign, I've decided to use these ideas for a Kalashtar psion/cleric of the Path of Light/psychic theurge. I just can't decide whether to go kineticist or shaper, as both have merit in relation to Green Lantern abilities. But rather than using your idea of a bracer, I was going to have his cleric holy symbol be a ring that he also uses as a sort of "mental focus" for his powers. So the powers would come from the character himself, rather than the ring, so unlike a GL ring someone else couldn't pick it and use it, but it is similar in the respect that despite the power the ring innately possesses, it depends on a strong wielder to use it correctly. One thing I'm stuck on is how to disguise the character's name. "Hal" is a common kalashtar prefix, and according to Races of Eberron is one of the more combat oriented lineages, but "Haljordan" seems just a little too obvious. |
| Rechan08-02-07, 04:04 AM | I think the bracer would have to be Recharged. GL had to return to base and get his ring recharged by one of the green Lantern thingies. |

My suggestion, as much as I'm loathe to say it, is to use the erudite psion variant form Complete Psionic instead of the standard psion. IIRC the erudite can pick and choose what powers you want, regardless of the discipline (although I could be wrong). And if you're looking for a name, how about Hal'ganthet? :D |
| TheKeyofE08-02-07, 10:21 AM | My suggestion, as much as I'm loathe to say it, is to use the erudite psion variant form Complete Psionic instead of the standard psion. IIRC the erudite can pick and choose what powers you want, regardless of the discipline (although I could be wrong). The erudite doesn't get free access to disciplines. He can learn powers from discipline specific lists by spending XP to learn it from a stone or someone else's mind, or EK, but can't access them normally. Which is really too bad, because I was actually looking at the Mantled Erudite alternate feature from Mind's Eye, thinking about picking up the Freedom mantle for Psionic Fly. I'm actually having a rougher time with the build than I originally thought; all the powers I want (Fly, Energy Missile, Astral Construct) are all on different discipline lists, and I don't have enough feats for EK. EDIT: I feel dumb for not thinking of this earlier: make the ring a psicrystal. |
| Warforged Goblin08-02-07, 11:51 AM | In that case, just go shaper and have your constructs do the stuff for you. |
| Bodger08-04-07, 10:23 PM | Ok give this formation. The ring/bracer holds 8 points per level of the character(psion character) if a non psion has it it only has 8 pts per day. The ring/bracer renews its power every 24 hours. 2 ways to run this, either say a dawn the points renew or keep track and the points renew 24 hrs after use (ex. at noon the character uses 12 points amping up a force wall; those points are not availavle until noon the next day: alot of keeping track on the pc and dms part) create a complete ability tree for the item and as the pc goes up in levels with the item new avenues/abilities are openned up. The battery can come into play, the item when in contact with the battery for an hour gets an addional 2 pp per level.{we have a kalastar psion in our group and the added points would come in handy.} Drawback to balance it a bit. The item ring/bracer suppresses or absorbs all of the pcs psionic points. Once again to control the chacacter again could use the battery idea like for every hour with the battery you gain a percentage of your original pp for either amping up the ring or use for your base powers. Once again for an item of legacy or legend status you may have to pay a price to wield it. 2 missions: one for the ring/bracer and the other to find the battery. Bodger articifer supreme give me time and i will make it for you |
| Lancer201008-05-07, 02:15 PM | And if you're looking for a name, how about Hal'ganthet? :D Or Hal'Oa. Oa being the spirit within, and whom was the original source of the plan to form these bracers/rings as a Corps to uphold order. |
| aelryinth08-05-07, 11:54 PM | As long as you can keep a straight face to not let the others know you're playing them, just call your Character 'Jhor-dayn', put an accent on it, and don't invoke your lineage except in the most formal of situations. and don't use green or lantern emblems. You might want to take a Lineage feat like Fearless, or a level of Paladin, just for thematic sense, of course. Under the Rings of the Day the Twelve Moons of Night Dust and Darkness will I eternal Fight. Let those who desire fallen Khyber's Might Beware a pure soul's Silver Light! wa taaaaa. ===Aelryinth |
| Lancer201008-06-07, 11:18 PM | Under the Rings of the Day the Twelve Moons of Night Dust and Darkness will I eternal Fight. Let those who desire fallen Khyber's Might Beware a pure soul's Silver Light! For that oath, I salute you. |
| eehamburg08-07-07, 10:51 AM | How would you handle the corps? You have Hal, Jon, Guy, Kyle, etc. |
| TheKeyofE08-15-07, 08:54 PM | I've basically finished the build. I had a really hard time getting it to work right until I just abandoned the idea of being a cleric of the Path of Light. Once I made him a generic cleric instead so I could choose any domains I wanted, everything fell into place rather easily. I'll still roleplay as being devoted to the light, and with Eberron's lax view of alignment vs diety alignment, I think a lax view of domains vs diety domains works just fine. I posted it on the CO boards to get some feedback on the feat and power selections, but nobody replied with anything. Warforged Goblin started an interesting thread (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=880190) on the Eberron boards about an artifact that worked like a Green Lantern's power ring, powered by il-Yannah, the universal force of Light that some kalashtar worship. The thread intrigued me. So I set out to build an Eberron specific character based on the GL corps, but rather than giving him a ring as the source of his powers, I wanted a psionic character with a power list that replicated many of the GL abilities from the comics. (DISCLAIMER: I'm not a huge GL fan, and have only read maybe half-a-dozen GL comics, plus watched a couple Justice League episodes, but Warforged Goblin's ideas really inspired me.) Based on my reading, even though every Lantern is different, most of them exhibited several similar powers:Energy manipulation, force blasts Matter manipulation Flight Teleporting Telekinesis Defensive shields Creating walls Creating tools and constructs So that's what I set out to replicate. After reading this thread (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=894397), I decided to make him a psychic theurge rather than a straight psion. Despite the significant hit to his manifester level and PP pool, I felt the cleric spells would make him more useful to a party and give him more utility/versatility. Making him a cleric of The Path of Light would reflect his devotion to the Light better than a straight psion. I actually had to make a flavor compromise, and make him a generic cleric rather than a cleric of The Path of Light, because tPoL had crappy domains. Haljhordain Male Kalashtar Build: Shaper 1 / Cleric 2 / Shaper +1 / Cleric +1 / Shaper +1 / Psychic Theurge 10 / (4 levels of whatever) 32 points Str: 10 Dex: 12 Con: 14 Int: 16 Wis: 14 Cha: 12 Domains: Travel, Force (Spell Comp.) 1st: Psicrystal Affinity, Practiced Manifester (psion) 3rd: Sacred Boost 6th: Empower Power 9th: Psicrystal Containment 12th: Expanded Knowledge (Schism) 15th: (open) 18th: (open) 1st: Astral Construct, Far Hand, (Crystal Shard or Energy Ray), Entangling Ectoplasm, Vigor 2nd: (Energy Push or Energy Stun), Share Pain, (2 others) 3rd: Telekinetic Force, Solicit Psicrystal, Energy Wall, Ectoplasmic Cocoon 4th: Telekinetic Maneuver, Burrowing Bonds, (2 others) 5th: Telekinetic Buffer, (2 others) 6th: Temporal Acceleration, Overland Flight, Disintigrate 7th: Mass Ectoplasmic Cocoon, Inconstant Location, Energy Conversion 8th, 9th: (whatever...) So going back to my original objectives:Energy manipulation, force blasts: Energy Ray, Energy Push, Energy Conversion, Magic Missile (from Force domain) Matter manipulation: (not really sure about this one) Flight: Travel domain gives me Fly at 8th level (one level later than a straight Nomad); Psionic Overland Flight at 15th Teleportation: Travel domain gives me Dimension Door, Teleport, Greater Teleport; Inconstant Location at 17th Telekinesis: Far Hand, TK Force, TK Maneuver, TK Buffer, Otiluke's Spheres (Force Domain) Defensive shields: psicrystal/Share Pain/Vigor combo; heavy armor and heavy shield, cleric buffs and heals Creating walls: Energy Wall, Wall of Force (Force domain) Creating tools and constructs: Astral Construct, Entangling Ectoplasm, Ectoplasmic Cocoon, Burrowing Bonds The Sacred Boost feat from Complete Divine is there to improve his healing efficiency. Fluff wise, his psicrystal is in the shape of a ring, and he uses it as a sort of "mental focus" for his psi powers. It also serves as his cleric holy symbol. In the morning when he prays for his cleric spells and meditates to focus and refill his PP pool, he recites some version of the green lantern oath. (http://www.glcorps.org/oa-oath.html) So as I said at the beginning, what I want from you guys is a little help optimizing his feat and power lists. I tried to avoid selecting any powers that could be replicated by cleric spells. I've played several psions, but never a shaper and I've never really cared for Metacreativity as a whole. However, I know from this thread (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=896661) that metacreativity is the favorite of many CO board regulars. Are there any cool metacreativity combos I should know about beforehand? As far as my powers go, is there anything I'm missing that you guys think I should have? What about things I have that might have questionable use? If you want to suggest stuff for the last four levels or last two feats, that's cool too. But I don't really care since no campaign I've ever been in has gone that high. |
