| itraylor08-06-07, 08:23 AM | In Keith’s Dragonshards: Druids of Khorvaire, Part One he discusses in a sidebar the existence of a sect of druids and rangers know as The Shadows of the Forest. In the article he talks about the close affinity between members of the sect and displacer beast. I have never played a druid and have little experience with animal companions but would it be possible to have a displacer beast as an animal companion? What level would this be possible? Are there special feats that must be taken in order to have a magical beast as an animal companion? Thanks for any clarification. |

The Eberron Campaign setting has two feats that, together, will allow this, Beast Totem & Totem Companion. There is a 3rd tied into those, Beast Shape. Of course, you have to be the proper level (7th). |

The advantages are that you don't need to teach it tricks, you can theoretically fight from it while mounted, and with the DB's reach you're pretty safe from AOOs while casting. The drawbacks are that the damage output is significantly less than that of a tiger, it's grapple is less than that of an ape or bear at the same level, etc. Good flavor though. |
