| Tal'eth04-17-07, 06:43 PM | Hello:) I am creating a warforged character for a campaign and wasn't sure what to name him. I was hoping maybe some of you had some good names! Little about the character: He will probably take either warblade or fighter levels to begin with. His fighting style would be characterized by the Lightning Mace feat from the Complete Warrior. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!! |
| LoneStranger04-17-07, 06:49 PM | There's a thread somewhere on the boards that's devoted to names for Warforged, either ones that people have used or ones they want to use. Generally though the names are short, simple, and to the point. Given the feat you put in there Mace would be a good one for starters. What were the weapons you were planning to use? any ideas about a backstory for him? It'll help generate ideas. |
| Siberys04-17-07, 06:49 PM | Discharge Bludgeon Cudgel Truncheon Drummer Percussion etc. I particularly like cudgel and truncheon |
| RogueElement04-17-07, 07:13 PM | "Buster" named after everyone's favorite knockaround guy from Mythbusters. |
| Darth Syntax04-17-07, 07:18 PM | Blast! And here is was hopeing for an Arrested Development reference . . . |
| Neofish04-17-07, 07:47 PM | Bash. Brusier. Thrash. Smash. Crush. Hammer. Mace. Mince. Groundbreaker. Devastator. Quake. Mangle. Breaker. Vicious. Maim. ThunderFist. ThunderHand. ThunderHead. | Darkarcher73604-17-07, 08:30 PM | I hear C3P-O is pretty popular:D |

| Tal'eth04-17-07, 08:59 PM | Thanks for all the replies!! As far as background goes, he is a member of an ancient race of warforged that predates House Cannith's "invention." He has no knowledge of this, as his memory is limited to the last two years of his existence. He "awoke" knowing nothing except his name, the common language, his skills at war, and a sense of purpose that he can't seem to identify. He is very intelligent, but not a bookworm. Socially, he is eager for friendship, as the world around him often despises his kind. He values charity, mercy, and service, but knows not why (these values have created within him turmoil, as the skills of war come so easily and are second nature to him). His fighting style is quick, direct, and decisive, though his thoughts are deep in the study of his opponents. His weapon of choice is the battle baton (he wields 2 simultaneously)--in game terms, a light mace. Tempest prestige class is in his future, along with the feats that allow multiple attacks when using the Spring Attack feat. He will spring up, attack his opponent a few times, spring back and study his opponent to best determine his next action/attack (rinse, repeat when possible). He is also small sized (Warforged Scout out of MM3). |
| Daydreamer04-17-07, 10:30 PM | Thanos. idk i like it for a warforged name, etymologically it has a connection to the word death in meaning. |
| Tal'eth04-18-07, 10:50 PM | Thanks Daydreamer:) I like that name, but not sure what I'll go with yet. btw, I found your signature interesting. Are they just thoughts for the most part, or are they an integral part of your personal philosophy of life? |
| Estalies04-19-07, 12:43 AM | name him after the firat thing he saw when he opened his eyes like someone askes him his name and he cant remember it, but the first thing he saw when he awoke pops into his head or failing that call him: Juice |
| The Ubbergeek04-19-07, 01:51 AM | I suggested D'Acier (Of Steel, in french), which seems very fitting for him. |
| Trannic04-19-07, 11:11 AM | Maul. Then you get to say fun lines like, " The Maul is open and there's a discount on pain." |
| Daydreamer04-19-07, 12:13 PM | thinking is an integral part of my philosophy of life. so they are more than 'just thoughts' but i question everything, especially my own beliefs. Maul. Then you get to say fun lines like, " The Maul is open and there's a discount on pain." hahah thats awesome |
| Tembo04-20-07, 10:24 PM | Pulver. |
| KidChainsaw04-21-07, 12:31 AM | Don't know if it applies to the given situation but I've always thought that warforged were given a designation something like a series of numbers and letters not unlike a serial number. Non 'forged who would spend time around a given warforged would probably give him a nickname. "Lambda-93x45???!?!, I'll just call you Bob." |
| Tal'eth04-21-07, 12:44 PM | Thanks a lot for the replies!! They are helpful!! Trannic, your comment about "Maul" was hilarious, heh. |
| Tal'eth04-21-07, 12:48 PM | Daydreamer... Have you come to any conclusions through your questioning? I'd email you, but you have that option disabled (understandable). |
| dutchmason04-22-07, 02:25 PM | Blitz |
| John Q. Mayhem04-22-07, 02:38 PM | I like "Shiver." |
| Zylo_Drizzt04-23-07, 04:40 PM | I did not see it so I'll post it. Forge |
| Shady31404-23-07, 06:33 PM | Take Mace. Chop off the e. Mac or possibly Mack. It's related and a bit more "human." I think warforged tending toward the construct side choose the names like Axe and Destructor. Naming themselves after their supposed purpose or just another tool helps them see themselves as metal rather than flesh. More social types take names that are more like actual names. Perhaps he calls himself Mace and shortens it to Mac. Or perhaps he never names himself and others start calling him Mace and he uses it since he doesn't care. But eventually his friends call him Mac. |
| Count Nerindil Van Seraph04-23-07, 07:31 PM | I like drummer. That one just rubbed me the right way. Battery. Hailstorm. Avalanche. Buttercup. Maul. Then you get to say fun lines like, " The Maul is open and there's a discount on pain." Sig'd |
| Daydreamer04-24-07, 01:58 AM | Daydreamer... Have you come to any conclusions through your questioning? I'd email you, but you have that option disabled (understandable). you could just send a pm, but what question do you have in mind specifically? |
| bad_phil04-24-07, 12:53 PM | For warriors: Fist, Scatter, Fall, Breaker, Montain, Shield, Slash, Tower, Spear, Splitter, Armor, For Wizards or the like: Branch, Staff, Ruby, Crystal, Speech, Starsign, Light, Path, Ring, Tempest, For Rogue and the like: Cloak, Hood, Scarf, Street, Shadow, Key, Swift. You can combine too. |
| gelalshawr04-24-07, 02:07 PM | I hear C3P-O is pretty popular:D he's making a warrior, C3P-0 is a name for whiny bards that put all their skill points into Speak Language |
| Grynn04-25-07, 04:07 PM | he's making a warrior, C3P-0 is a name for whiny bards that put all their skill points into Speak LanguageI am not! Er, what I meant to say is no it's not. |
| LoneStranger04-25-07, 06:52 PM | Sad thing is I'd believe it for the C-3P0 crack. For the warforged that's the purpose of this thread call him Thwack, after the sound his weapons make. One person in the Eberron campaign I'm in has a warforged scout actually named Artoo (R2), the GM offered me some XP to get gold plates on my warforged but I turned it down, partially due to the fact his version of diplomacy involves a bastard sword and a couple of minutes. |
| JulesCARV04-25-07, 07:12 PM | What about a warforged who picks a name that isn't descriptive? For warforged warblade, for instance, who wants to seek glory and fame (I know, not all warblades are like that, but that's the stereotype), he might have a name that he personally finds aesthetically pleasing, rather than descriptive. In short, if you think he'd like being called Matthias Kirchner, then that could work too. Most warforged may pick descriptive names for themselves, but that doesn't mean all of them have to. |
| LoneStranger04-26-07, 07:54 PM | Well the main reason why the names have been really functional so far is because that's how the warforged operate at this point in time. They're soldiers that were drilled in all things military since they were fresh out of the forge. So while it is possible for a warforged to have a lavish and generally outrageous name only fit for the most self-absorbed of nobles right now that's more of a wild exception. If you get a chance to look through some of the Eberron material most warforged you find have just basic, straightforward names. |
| Trannic04-26-07, 10:57 PM | Finally I get a chance to look again. Thanks, by the way, one of my players in the game I was running called his 'forged that. I also had a warforged cleric of the sovereign host named Symbol. Truthfully though, you can name your warforged anything, in the Age of Worms adventure path, I remade the cleric Valkus Dun into a warforged, and created a new backstory for him, kept the name though. You could always go with something more cerebral or esoteric like, Dust, Memory, Anger, or Earth. Ya know, something like that. |
| yrogerg04-26-07, 11:30 PM | Here's my perspective on Warforged names: I remember that the ECS or Races or some early book describes Warforged as being somewhat disinterested in names themselves, allowing themselves to be named by their friends or taking names from the objects around them. What I inferred from this is that a lot of the object names many Warforged have are a result of human comrades or masters with a particular sense of irony or humor. In particular, my gaming groups have have enjoyed giving Warforged characters object-names that were vaguely human-like. In one campaign, my party named my Warforged Psywar character "Adam", after its adamantine plating*. In a later campaign, our group included a Greatsword-weilding Artificer/Barbarian who went by the name "Dirk". Things like that. So, Tal'eth, the fact that your warforged is a more ancient one piqued my interest. I would suggest an archeologically-related name. Personally, I like the name "Mattock" as a fit, though I suspect that some of those in your party might start calling him "Shovel" or "Spade" or "Trowel" instead. Edit: Incidentally, one of my friends just sent me this link (http://i16.tinypic.com/2nga62f.jpg) *After this character died, his psycrystal was recovered and reforged into a new Warforged, who called himself "Temper" after this ordeal. |
| crow0404-27-07, 12:30 AM | I like miltary acronyms for my warforged. To give an example, I recently made a drugeoncrasher warforged juggenaut named Heavy Infantry Close Quater Specialist Mark V, or HICQuSpiMaV for short.(party calls him Hicqu for shorter) |
| rvielman04-27-07, 02:38 PM | Thud. |
| JulesCARV04-27-07, 08:20 PM | Well, okay, most warforged may have names like "Axe" or the like, but my point is, if you're making a warforged, you could go that route, but it isn't compulsory or anything. For the record, you can also have an honorable, straightforward Zil gnome, an irreligious Thranish, etc. I'm not saying that playing counterstereotypical characters should be the norm -- just that it's a viable option. |
| yrogerg04-28-07, 12:51 AM | Well, okay, most warforged may have names like "Axe" or the like, but my point is, if you're making a warforged, you could go that route, but it isn't compulsory or anything. For the record, you can also have an honorable, straightforward Zil gnome, an irreligious Thranish, etc. I'm not saying that playing counterstereotypical characters should be the norm -- just that it's a viable option. Sure, it's mostly a matter of preference, and simply playing to a stereotype isn't all that fun. Like I said, my gaming groups *have* modified the "standard" names a bit, often making them more human-like, and with the background largely being that they're the result of the sense of humor on the part of the warforgeds' human overlords. |
| Geregald04-30-07, 04:01 PM | I'm currently still in the process of building & fleshing-out a custom world for a campaign that starts in two weeks, but here's a twist you can put on Warforged as an example: My world uses elements from Eberron (and in extremely rare cases, d20 Modern), but is still vastly a Greyhawk-esque world. In this particular world, the Houses do not exist (though Dragonmarks do, with different history to them), therefore the entire background of Warforged being created by House Cannith is null. Instead, Warforged are the bastard children of Human & Gnomish innovation in both engineering and magic. As such, they're as likely to have human names as "mechanical" or "object" names... and in some cases, small-sized "Gnome-Forged" even carry gnomish names. Example 'Forged-specific names: Clicky Tick-Tock Gearhead Sprocket McPicky (miner) etc... Basically, when they're not given Human or Gnomish names, they're often given a "nick" name having something to do with their occupation, function in society, or appearance. Thus, it's as likely for a Warforged Berserker / Juggernaught to be known as "Clunker" as it is a Warforged Swashbuckler to be known as "Springy" (for jumping tendencies) or "Roller" (for acrobatics). It's definately not an "Eberron" feel as this is more light-hearted, but then, so are their origins in this world. -Geregald |
