I don't really like half-elves all that much in other portions of the DnD world. But, House Lyrander has saved the race for me and I've always contemplated making a Windright Captain sorta char.

So anyone have any recommended builds for them? Or stories about Windright Captains they've played and ideas for Airships?

His ship was a sweet setup 4 magic turrets. Like the traps but our artificer made them crew manned, 2 fireball turrets and 2 chain lightning turrets. the ship used an air elemental for power

never did Windwright Captain, but the Mark of Storm has other possibilities with characters.

Once played a Lyrandor druid that took the Stomlord PrC (from Complete Divine). Now that guy was just scary... Had a Raiden-like feel from Mortal Combat. Was very cool to play.

Ah, Xavin Seldiarin d'Lyrandar, one of my absolute favorite characters I've ever played. Bard/Rogue/Windwright Captain (Can't remember the levels off the top of my head.) He was pretty much a less gruff Malcom Reynolds (from Firefly) with a liberal dash of Jack Sparrow thrown in for good measure. Captain of a ship called the Expeditious Retreat . Smallish ship, but she'll make any run anywhere with no questions asked.

Tremendous fun to play, especially once I got the shipbond abilities. It's always a good time to be best of friends with your airship. Also, playing a privateer captain wes NEVER not fun.

Mechanically and fluff-wise, the PrC adds some fun, unique little abiliies that can make life a lot easier for the party. I can't tell you how much simpler things got when I got the Retreat and we didn't have to keep paying exorbitant amounts to other airship captains to get them to fly us clear across the globe. Oh, and the image of your airship flying itself over a Xen'Drik temple and coming to the rescue of your fairly certainly doomed party is just plain cool.

I haven't played one, but I've convinced one of my friends to gear up towards one for when we play Eberron.

I sold him on the idea like this:

"You know that Eberron has airships, right?"
"Yeah."
"There's a PrC that let's you be an airship pirate pretty much."
" "

I always figured on going straight bard before going into the PrC maybe a level of dragonmark hier first.

Though the class gives you the ability to improve your infusion casting levels also so an artificer build is probably not out of the question

I'm actually considering going Beguiler with this char. Good amount of skills and a spell lists I find quite enjoyable.

Nothing better then a stealth bomber too.

The fastest and easiest, but probably most boring way to get to Windwright would be straight Bard, 7 levels' worth. Failing that, Artificer is also a way to go, if you don't mind having to spend extra points for the cross-class levels in Balance ranks, or multiclassing.

Personally I wanted something different. Thus, I give you my own take on the Windwright.

Meet Weylan d'Lyrandar, Khoravar Half-Elf Bard 2/Swashbuckler 3/Dragonmark Heir 1/Storm Sentry 1/Windwright Captain 2.

He's a fairly youngish half-elf who served in the final years of the Last War as a mate on a House Lyrandar airship working semi-freelance on missions between Aundair and Cyre. Having manifested his Mark of Storm during a critical moment when the captain wasn't at the helm of the ship, he's gone on to gain some acclaim and prestige in his house, and along with recognition as an up-and-coming bearer of the Mark, he's also been afforded some specialized combat training that lets him make further use of his spell-like abilities to cushion his fall, blow enemies through the air, and control the winds to spur a vessel along at greater speeds than before.

Recently, through a lot of careful inquiry, he finally managed to take title of the now-decommissioned airship he served on in the Last War, re-christened by him as the 'Furious Angel', and is learning to forge a lasting positive relationship with the vessel's air elemental, along with the ship's crew and his first mate. He likes shiny leather boots, silver buckles, and is almost never without his rapier, and a smartalecky quip to throw his enemies off, or at least, his opponents at the card table.

Don't be afraid to come up with something a little unconventional.... If you're looking for something more spellcasty, try the Beguiler. Combative? Try the Warmage or Duskblade, though the low skill points are a bit of a toughy. There are plenty of ways to go... you just have to look for them

I've been in an Eberron campaign for nigh eighteen months, and we've had one Windwright Captain in our party. His name was Nayar d'Lyrandor. I think he went from Artificer to Dragonmark Heir, then into Windwright Captain. His crew (of course, courtesy of Leadership) are a mottled bunch of ex-convicts and brawlers.

The airship itself has a dragon head motif for the prow- which spits fireballs upon command. He hasn't done much piracy in his days, but he is returning full-powered in two weeks.

I highly suggest playing one- especially if there's an Orien Messenger in the party. Hilarious. Just hilarious.

Where are the rules for onboard magical weapons like chain lightning turrets and such? Thanks

There aren't any. It is mostly a matter of what your DM (or you) allows in the game. I think most people use the wand rules for that sort of stuff though.

I would look at the prestige class Storm Sentry out of Dragonmarked. You can get in to at easy and it goes good with the windright captain.

The long version for reasons for taking Storm sentry then Windright Captain

First read it

Windwright Captain http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20050803a&page=3

I truely think that you should go into the storm sentry Prestige class it offers so much more the the dragonmarked heir. It for one stacks like the heir one class levels for the caster level of your spell like ablities. But it also gies you others that that heir would normally not, such as feather fall and shield. It as increases the nuber of times aday you can use the dragonmarked powers. Theyy have the same skill points and the profession which you will need to get into windright. It has a better hit die too.

I would look at going 2beguiler/3swashbuckeler/2storm sentry/5windright captain. The things that all the class abilities will work nicely off one another.

The Beguiler will start you off with a good list of skills and the abilities of trapfinding, surprise casting and cloak casting. The suprize casting would be good to use with the gust of wind abilty of the dragonmark. The other nice thing is aa begiler you can were light armor as a caster.

The swashbuckeler gives you first a d10 hitdie. But it gets better as a lone begilur your attack bonus would be that of a wizard, the swashbucker will help kick it back up to that of a rogue, made be a little better. You also get weapon finesse grace +1 and insightful strike. The weapon finesse will help you if you have half a brain and put your dex high to go a long with the light armor of the beguiler as well as the trapfinding ability. Everyone knows if you are going to take points in search and disable devise then you might as well have some in open lock. That brings me to the next point grace a +1 to reflex saves will help, we all fail the seach or disable devise sometime. The insightful strike will go well also with beguiler due to the high int you will have for casting spells.

Storm sentry gives you uses of your dragonmarked power gust of wind equile to your class level. I as so gives you the power to cast feather fall in place of gust of wind as well as a shield.
